- Cashfree payment is becoming the norm these days which makes my profession a dying art. Is this the craziest thing you've ever heard? A busker with a card reader?

I think it's a fantastic idea, especially for buskers. No more worries about people nicking your guitar case, box, pot of donations/payments, and as you say, cash is becoming more and more obsolete.
We are nearing an age where cash will cease to exist and everything will be cards, so why not everyone get into the 21st century and start now :)
+TristanJClaxton exactly my thoughts! It'll take some getting used to but so did mobile phones!
Pope
you
Hey Charlotte,
Are you still using your card reader? I bought one like your's (Sumup).
But the thing that bothers me is that you have to enter the price on your phone...?
How can you play and enter a price on your phone at the same time...
I guess you only use it at the end of your set?
Heya :) that is great that you’re using one too! I have an iZettle and they have created a new app development that allows you to set a price (£1 or £2 or more) and it resets every time someone taps. It means I don’t have to input the amount each time and I can keep playing.
I did contact Sumup to ask for a similar development in the past but they did not respond. IZettle however have been really helpful and I highly recommend switching xxx
Great! Thank you so much for your answer. :)
Is the crowd taping a little more than a year ago????
Hey Charlotte, are people using your card reader more today than before?
@@ccampbellmusic That sounds good - will it work outside of London? I busk in Devon!
Promenade Promotions hey, I’m in Devon, too! Just got an iZettle and looking forward to testing it out. Where do you busk in Devon? I’ve played Exeter and Barnstaple - both great vibes!
We came to London 14 May and saw you, my wife was the one that just walked up and hugged you, and I normally don't have cash but I remember you mentioning in some vlog how when you occasionally saw a fiver in your basket how happy it would make you, so I made sure to have one to give you that day.
+Gene aw your wife is so sweet coming up and hugging me!! Thanks for the donation :) very very much appreciated!
Great idea but this does remind me of a Mr Bean sketch where he enjoys the busker but has no cash to tip them. He "borrows" a speaker from a stall holder, plays a CD and does his mad, crazy, rubbish dance. Someone tips him for his "busking" and Mr Bean gives the tip to the busker he enjoyed in the first place. So, to those who may disagree with card readers, would you rather "Mr Bean it" or use your card? Me, I'd use my card. Or pull out my cigar box guitar and play chords while you jam and sing. So Mr Bean it and use my card here haha.
Keep rocking it Charlotte. It always takes a while for some folk to catch on but they will when it's a bit more commonplace. You got the skills to get paid, plastic or dirty ol' cash!
+Ol Grey Bear hahahaa that’s a brilliant Mr. Bean sketch! Shows real commitment to getting the busker paid which is a positive for us buskers! Haha!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I’ll keep on plugging away :) it’s going so well and I’m really honoured by all the support! X
haha, I remember about three years ago when I first ever met you Charlotte, and my mind was blown, seriously! I was kinda newish on the south bank scene so I didn't know where any cash points were, and I genuinely never had any money on me, other than a pound but I mean, I didn't want to just give that cos you were brilliant and wanted to support you. I remember asking a service man where the nearest cash point was and he legit told me to walk about a mile, of which I did. I got all the way there and guess what? No money was in the machine, so I then proceeded to go further and I managed to draw out £20 and I finally brought a CD and left a tenner in your case, alongside a napkin from the ice cream van which I wrote a note to say u were brilliant. Long stories short, THIS card reader would have been perfect! I shall be using it when I see it, and I think a lot of buskers should too! Good Job! See you soon! - Zoe x
+Zoe Lloyd haha oh no the Southbank really is not cash point friendly! Thanks for your commitment to the cause Zoe! I think most people would have given up! Really appreciate you sticking by my music all these years :) got some exciting things planned!
Four years on, it is much more the norm and currently essential to have to busk for Busk in London. Got mine the other day for the busk gigs I’ve got coming up! Thanks for sharing girl 😊
Haha so true! People thought it was crazy then but now people actually come up and ask “where’s your card reader” 😂
Hi! I live in Sweden but I travel to London quite often. My family loves the south bank because of all the art and music and once we saw you and then I stalked you on your medias all the way home. I dream about being a musician and work really hard on my instrument but I get so stressed and anxious sometimes so then I usually watch your videos and that really helps, you are THE BEST BUSKER EVER!!! I wish I could ser you soon of that I could Gerard 1 million youtube accounts and subscribe to you on all of them but I aint got the time to do that, well I hope you become very famouse either way because you really deserve it!!!
Bah bah bah bah there's music on the streets of London
+stellan vallenberg aw this is so nice thank you! I'm so happy that I can help when you're feeling anxious! Your support means so much and I hope I can meet you someday :)
I was in London the other day and my little sister and brother donated money xx
+heyitstasha xoxo aw tell them thanks from me! 😊
Hello, you were at Waterloo earlier this evening. Brilliant performance. Tried to purchase your CD but the card reader wasn't turned on :(
Ahh I'm so sorry for my late reply but YES that was defs me I play that pitch a lot and I remember you that day! So sorry but hope you will pop by again soon and I'll switch the reader on I swear 😊 have a great week xx
Did people start using this anymore over the last three years?
I’ve just started busking again since the lockdown has been eased, but it seems not many people are carrying cash anymore, so I’m thinking of getting one.
Hey! Thanks for watching, great news, yes they really did start to use it more after I made this video. I actually just made an update on this in terms of busking in Covid19! I think you might be right about cash in post pandemic times. But I did find a huge uptake in the use of the card reader over the last year or so especially so maybe it'll become more normalised since cash is becoming rarer! xx
@@ccampbellmusic Brilliant.
Yeah, I've basically decided to get one. :)
I’ve just got one and going for my first busk with it tomorrow in Newcastle
Ahh hope it went well 😊
Im a norwegiam busker/vlogger and i actually sometimes use a norwegian app called Vipps. Everybody has it, and it allows you to transfer via your smartphone. I dont even need a card reader, just a sign and my phone number. I think there are similar apps in UK, i guess.
+Magnus Storm that's so clever! I wish we had something similar here!
+Magnus Storm thanks for watching by the way! Would love to come and busk in Norway sometime!
yeah you should! i think you would enjoy it! let me know if you ever decide to come!:))
Cash = FREEDOM
+Anything Goes I agree, but cash only carries value so long as it is accepted within society. Without the societal agreement that paper and coins are worth the amount they display, they are nothing but coins and paper. Cash is an illusion. And it's being wiped out so you have to move with the times.
Digital currency is just as much of an illusion based on the same societal agreement. People will eventually regret being lazy & allowing their governments to lead them like sheep into cashless societies.
Charlotte, what card reader do you use today (2024)? Also, usually a vendor has to charge the other person a certain amount (to initiate a transaction and then the person taps their phone or swipes the card . . ) So how did you get around the fact that a person giving you money through the device has not been charged anything?
Hello! I still use the izettle now in 2024 (6 years later!) Yes, unfortunately the vendor charge is a downside of taking card payments. You have to weigh up if its worth losing that small percentage, or if you'd rather potentially lose the payment altogether by not having a cash-free option. There's no way around it. That's the reality of people carrying less cash I suppose.
@@ccampbellmusic thanks. How does the donor input the amount they want to tip? Did you make it a set amount?
@@shanenichols1052 I use the Repeat Pay function that iZettle has. I have to set the amount myself and they can request to change it if they want to but people tend to just tap and go, unless they're buying a CD or want to tip more generously.
@@ccampbellmusic Ah, thank you.
Hi, love your work. Do you have to accept the payment and reset the fee after each payment or can you set it and leave it all through the busk?
Heya I’m so sorry for my late reply! The izettle reader now has a repeat pay function so you don’t to reset every time it’s amazing! Send me a message if you need any help setting up ☺️
Charlotte Campbell thanks for getting back, I’ve got that sorted 👍 be lucky ✌️🎸
Great idea. Just ordered one myself for my tiny business. How many times I’ve had oh I’ve not got any cash on me. As I have to take it out and about with me so it’s great to know it doesn’t need a WiFi signal.
Hope it’s working out well for you! ☺️
Everyone needs them now!
RIGHT? It’s come in so handy lately ☺️
Thanks for doing this video. I'm considering the 2nd version of this card reader. Have you had much success with it since making the video?
Hey! Thanks for watching ☺️ yeah I highly recommend to be honest! I have been meaning to make an update because it’s definitely been a positive move for me and I’d like to share my experiences a few years on!
@@ccampbellmusic so, I applied for one, and they refused me based on credit check, which is odd as I ws paying up front for the machine. I'm out of options sadly.
No way? I had no idea they did a check like that. I’m sorry to hear this 😞 I hope you find another solution. Perhaps sumup or a PayPal machine? X
Will be in London in June. Hope to cross paths with you to get the opportunity to use my contactless card for the first time :)
+antesoles awesome :) hope to see you in June!
Yeh I heard that some buskers in Waterloo have card readers
That's me sometimes 😊
I was looking for someone sharing a few details on how this card reader works. I was thinking about getting one for my restaurant since its been a hassle with the bank that provided me with theirs.
+Simon D.C. I highly recommend this one, it’s so easy to use and goes straight into your bank account! I love it!
I purchased one and installed it in no time. It is connected via Bluetooth with my tablet and the tablet it connected to our wifi... it worked beautifully.9 People paid through the izettle so far, now I am hoping it will show up on my bank account soon.
Simon D.C. I was looking into it too as the usual card readers are really pricey for small shops uk rates are at least £15 terminal rent and £15 for their transaction fees as a minimum. So £540 annually just in their charges. So 1.75% flat fee makes sense if you taking say £900 monthly you still save £15 per month
2:13 we totally agree with you Charlotte!
+iZettle thanks guys! I'm loving the card reader by the way! I forgot to mention here but I've taken a lot of payments for CDs and especially at gigs it's been a godsend!! Thanks a lot for watching :)
Glad to hear that! Thanks for your kind words! Good luck with your sales!
Greatest busker = Charlotte Campbell !
I'm moving in London in July, I hope I'll cross your way some day :)
+Zazou aw thank you!!! See you in July I hope!
Art in public space is a profession, love it
+Subway DJ 😊
As long as the busker won't see how much I give, the contacless terminal is fine by me. I mean with cash I like to give the amount that I give so that the busker doesn't know how much was it. Unless they're selling their CDs from a case, in that of course they need to know that I paid what they ask for it.
+GSjmak yeah I see your point, for now the card reader only works if I input the amount so that needs to change. The payee should be allowed to input the amount or it should just display a suggested donation (maybe £1ish) that everyone gives unless they state otherwise! There are definitely developments to be made. I think iZettle should consider making a busker friendly app that has features such as these so people can donate an amount they feel comfortable with, in secret!
Hope cash never becomes obsolite. Not much point in changing forms of current currency if that's the case and...... ohhhh bit dodgy, I'm a tradesman and say I just turn up on a broken down estate and start turning my hand to fixing things, then randomly pull out a card reader and expext to get paid..........yeah I can almost hear the tumble weeds before i even heard the busking music..🤣🤣 play me a sad song sis!
+Liamburnsable I'm not sure I understand your comment. Why wouldn't you expect to get paid for doing your job...what's dodgy about that?
Charlotte Campbell
Might not have been specific enough. Does anyone "hire a busker to be on the street playing music"? If yes then you are getting paid and do not need a card reader or to promote a card reader. If no then you choose to turn up on a street or other location and indulge in something you are talented at; playing music and possibly singing. I do not see how that transferes to an automatic entitlement to be paid. I am good at my job as a plumber, heating engineer and electrician. I can not ,however, if I just randomly turned up and started fixing peoples heating or plumbing or electrical installations without ever being asked to be there, I doubt and probably wouldn't expect to see a wage from that. The add is a bit irritating and detracts from what I see busking as to me. A talent on a street that asks for no payment but brings music to you're life so, yes I can't help flip some cash in to that box when it's good but to advertise for that just detracts from that lifestyle for me personally. Rough with the smooth builds charicter of the musician and doing it for the love of music and the hope of a pay means more than advertising a card reader 😥 The add is lacking in Integrity for a chosen profession. A hard one, but one you can see a charicter in and wish all the best with the toss of a pound stirling......... if they are good 😲
+Liamburnsable it's just giving people the option to "flip a coin" digitally. How is an open guitar case not an advertisement for you to pay/donate by cash, it's the same thing you're just not used to the sight of it yet.
Charlotte Campbell
🤔 still not convinced. In what respect is it a increasingly cash free society? "Obveously 50% of people are lieing" maybe 25% thought it was an ok performance and 25% just happened to be passing by. Not sure how this requires payment. It would take longer to have to to stop and make a card payment and probs interupt a performance than it does to deposit coin or note from the pocket. It comes off as forced beggiging introducing a card reader. Kind of like "yeah that was ok but, I wouldn't pay for it........ so I won't. Oh hey crap there's a card reader bet slap my card down orrr clearly I'm a twat. If that's the state of play I might just get my self a recorder, a card reader and start bannging out renditions of three blind mice over the weekend. Wo betide anyone who does not recognise my skills as a legit just turned up on you're doorstep profession.🤔
+Liamburnsable mate, nobody has to pay me. But people do. Don't have a go at me for making my living the way I do, for as long as people are willing to pay for it. People pay to watch football matches, I wouldn't choose to spend my money doing that but I'm not going to have a go at footballers for making their living that way. It's literally none of my business.
HOW DO PEOPLE SET THE AMOUNT THEY PAY?
You have to pre set the amount for them. The user cannot set an amount only the izettle owner.
@@ccampbellmusic Thanks Charlotte! Yeah I reckon that's a good thing, hope it catches on, I might use one in London when I get there!
That's an interesting idea. I'm really curious about how it will evolve. BTW: you also can steal all data with contactless readers ;-)
+Daniel Doe haha oops well promise you I'm not, I wouldn't know where to start! There is a slight change that needs to happen to make it busker friendly but it's getting there :)
Brilliant idea!!!!
+Terry Henderson yay glad you think so Terry!
Anyone played with Izettle in France ? Do French easily pay this way ?
I’m not 100% sure but I think it doesn’t work outside of the UK!
Hi charlotte it's me I have asked my mum if I could get making waves and she said she would look ! So exiting right you have a very nice voice even when your not singing and you have inspired me to make music videos and right my own music and I have righten a song called gully and ounce I have a vid of me singing it I will show you happy busking
I mean bully not gully
+Saskia Shows I'm so glad you're writing songs and I can't wait to hear you singing your song you have written!!!! Well done and you are wonderful! All my love xxxx
This is actually brilliant.
+Julius the Casual Gamer thank you for watching :)
Try wechat! With a 2d barcode, people can be friends with you and they can just send you a red envelope!
+John Lv thanks John I will check it out :)
Card is better than cash, thing with cash you can lose it but with card you can't unless you're dumb enough to let it happen
True true Nathan!
Well ahead of the curve there! I'm sure the press today will help normalise it! You say you got one for free? How did you do that?
Oops sorry for my late reply! Yeah the company iZettle gave me one to trial on the streets and all this press surrounding it has been brilliant :)
I wanted to readjust your glasses so bad at the end they were crooked 😂 please fix theeem
+Jack Bird haha they're broken 😩 but I love them so much 😓
They are actually a good visual hook....there is something about crooked glasses that just compels me to smile and stare at them.
As a street performer
Busking has never been a real profession. Busking is just for people to chuck some money in if they have any change if they want to or not. Card scanners destroy busking
Maybe not to you, but it’s been a profession for me for years and I’m proud of it. You can get stuck in the past if you want to but sooner or later you’re left behind!
I understand both side... I don’t want busking die because of cashless society but at the same time I truly dislike those card reader thing for busking. What about cute children throwing some coins in opened guitar case ? So charming ! Cashless society, dematerialized music... That really sucks. It deprives us of a lot of funny and cute interactions.
Hey Charlotte, I hope it's going better now and people are getting used to it. I'm an old busker planning to come out of retirement and I too am worried about the "cashless society", so I intend to get an iZettle too. The only thing is: it doesn't seem to plug in to my android mobile. Does it only work with certain (bluetooth able) phones? The offer (£19) expires in 3 days, so I'm desperate to know! Maybe I'll have to get a more expensive phone........ Thanks, good luck, hope to hear you play some day ;-)
Hey Peter huge apologies for my late reply!! But unfortunately I'm pretty sure that it's only compatible with Bluetooth phones! And I've just upgraded to Android only to find that the "repeat pay" feature that I was using for busking is only available on iPhone so I'm a bit stuck! I'll post some updates when I can! For now you'll be OK without a card reader as so many people still use cash. So get yourself out of retirement and onto the streets to make some music 😊
Thanks for your reply! I signed up for iZettle anyway for the special offer -they're planning an app for android too at some stage, or I may just get a refurbished iPhone 5 or 6, they're fairly cheap. I have voice trouble at present (possibly "silent reflux"), and though it's improving I'm not going to rush it; just working on repertoire, typing up, and honing my guitar playing. So much to do at present, including lots of work in the garden - which I hope will help me get fit again! All the best!
The weirdest cc location we came across was in the middle of a forest, to enter and climb a fire tower. Just had a cc swipe and pops the turnstile, nothing else to type on any console. Was thinking is this real the whole time.
Brilliant, I have an iZettle for my craft shows they are amazing if ever I am lucky enough so come and see you busking I will certainly pay by card I'm one of those people who Never have cash xx
+Jane Brettell the iZettles are brilliant! I am so pleased with mine! :) even I hardly ever have cash these days and it's my livelihood 😂
I mean, it would be cool if local councils paid buskers a small amount each week as well, seeing as they are creating an atmosphere in their area
+A British chap such a lovely idea!
And here we are nearly 3 years on and the card readers are way more commonplace, can't wait for mine! How is it nowadays Charlotte?
Hey Aaron! Thanks so much for checking in! I really need to do an update video. It’s really come into its own recently, I use it so so much. Update video coming in 2 weeks 🙏
@@ccampbellmusic That'd be grand, just ordered my iZettle 👍 Oh and congrats on Sir Paul! Busk in London's insta feed just informed me, what a score!
Charlotte your video came up for me in a Google search - for which I probably have to thank their algorithms, because obviously I've watched some of your lovely songs before this.
Five years on from having uploaded this video, i'm compelled to ask you - Are you finding the card reader more useful in 2022? I've only just got myself a reader from SumUp. Their service has been dreadful, AND their Air reader has an automatic standby mode, which can't be disabled, and makes it pretty much pointless for street performers like us to use ¬_¬
So I now need to look at getting a different card reader. I don't know if I can easily go with Zettle, as i've had other bad experiences with PayPal in the past.
If you can give me any other recommendations, i'd really appreciate it.
-Drew ( from my personal channel. My performing channel is Faux BoJo )
Hi Drew! Thanks for your comment! So glad the algorithm brought you back to me!
I’ve been finding the card reader to be a busking essential since the pandemic and really useful in 2022 as a street performer. Highly recommend everyone has one!
Sorry to hear SumUp has been so useless, I don’t really rate any other card reader options aside from izettle, they’re the only ones who’ve actually considered buskers in their software design.
PayPal only quite recently took over izettle so I don’t really consider them to be linked, but of course they are! You don’t need a PayPal account to open an izettle account though. But I understand if it’s more a case you don’t want it give PayPal a cut of your takings!
My other recommendation would be a QR code that links to stripe card payments. A website called busk.co do really good QR code boards!
Just got this and realised for all the people that busk she hasn't mentioned you need a iPhone to take repeat payments so remember if you are an artist buy am iPhone befor izettle just thought i would let all buskers know p.s of to go and get a phone have a guess witch one 😩 good bye my android we have spent some time together its not you its me im going to the dark side 😩😩😩
Hi Chris. Apologies for this, I made this video years ago and wasn’t aware of the need for iOS at the time. I didn’t realise myself until I updated my phone to an android and had to sell it and get an iPhone in order to use this software 😭 I’ve since made multiple updates making it very clear that it’s only iOS friendly. Hope you manage to make a swift transition to the dark side 😬😂 best of luck! X
hi, I am also a musician and I really liked the idea of the card reader, because besides being practical it is very safe. Just a suggestion, I saw the other video and the device was very low, making it difficult to access. Any small detail like this can make a difference in the end. Keep us posted on this, please. Success!
Charlotte, can I ask, what is the deal with the card readers? Do you have to pay a certain amount of money a month, and does a percentage of the payments go towards iZettle etc? We're going to be a group starting out here now in the North of Ireland for a while and we aren't sure if when just starting out if using the reader would be economically beneficial to us.
Hey Charles! Yeah so iZettle take 2% per transaction but there is no monthly charge or extra cost aside from the reader itself!
I would highly recommend it I never really notice the the 2% and it’s been a really positive addition to my busking set up x
I bought one 14 months ago before I released my original album. It cost me $99 for a swipe and insert only reader. It was $149 for one also capable of paywave and I didn't want to invest that much into something I wasn't sure I'd use. I used it twice at my Album launch for cds and have not used it at all since. It now won't connect with the app for some reason and I need to call customer service to fix it. Also the paywave capable one is now only $49, so I obviously jumped in at the right time to buy one! NOT. Wish I'd gotten mine for free, but anyway let's hope one day I finally make my $99 back!
Ahhh that's such a shame! But it's a wise move Samantha in the long run, try not to kick yourself too hard for it! Hope you fix the lack of connection! Or have a look at the iZettles if they have them over there. I highly recommend! I use it for CD sales at gigs too :)
You two girls are legends for being early adopters. In a few years i think this will be very common and no one will bat an eye at coughing up via their card. I don't think any of the Melbourne buskers have started using it yet and i haven't seen anyone using them at weekend or farmers markets. But maybe that's just me not looking hard enough!! I'd be keen to give it a go but i wouldn't want to pay much for it; or pay much in merchant fees. Please keep us updated on how it goes, i'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
I’ve just got an iZettle! Looking forward to road testing it - maybe more uptake post-COVID...
How are you getting on with it? Have people started to trust it a bit more?
Thanks for the vid!👌
Hey I’m so sorry for my late reply 😆 but YES I’m finding a lot of more use post-covid! My first busk back I took more in cash but I think it was a fluke because since then I’ve done 3/4 busks and the card reader is really popular! Probably 60-70% coming on card now! Hope you’re doing well with yours!x
i am the person with no cash on me.... ever, but i do try to make an effort, but fail ^^'
+joseph pearson hahaaa I need to know though! Is it just a polite lie or do you really not have cash? 😂
Charlotte Campbell I too need to know 😂😂
Charlotte Campbell I really never carry cash on me, just my card
