Corvette lover here, I owned a c3 for a long time and hope to get a C1 someday, since a C2 is a financial pipe dream, the C4 was a giant leap forward when they came out in regards to handling, and the last few years of the C3 were pathetic power wise, but If you tried getting into a C4 the space between the dash and the door sill is ridiculous 😢, don't know if I would own one ❤, but they are still fun to drive!😎😁😏

Just picked up a 1994 with 37029 miles. Has a little coolant leak. Having a truste mechanic over tomorrow to figure it out. Regardless, I love the car. White convertible, garage kept. ❤
I recently got a 94 c4 and all the information I found is very useful to know more about these cars since in the past I had an 81 c3 and it is not the same. Thank you for making this video and for being clear and specific in every detail. It's definitely a big help.
I had a 6-speed Z-51, a blast to drive, handled like on rails! Never had issues with the drivetrain! But cheap plastic parts…pick your battles there. Overall, these are the best bargains for performance, handling, and top down fun you’re gonna find on the market! Gobs of low end tire frying torque, throaty exhaust, simple engines and transmissions compared to newer ones. Rear entry level Vette under 20K all day long for clean ones! Don’t cheap out and buy a rag, you’ll be sorry, and end up having more in it than if you had bought a cherry one, trust me.
I would add that you really need to look over rubber vacuum lines and coolant hoses. Time is not kind to those items, especially since many good condition cars spent most of their lives in a non climate controlled garage. The car may look great, but the rubber may be starting to get brittle and cracking. Vacuum leaks can cause all sorts of problems, from rough idle, to failing cruise control, to problems with the climate controls.
Great video and I think you covered almost everything. I was suggest checking the oil and transmission fluid. Lastly, roll up the windows and make sure the doors close properly.
Good helpful video. I live in the UK, and my current 95 LT1 (in competition yellow) is my 3rd Vette. I had, and still have a problem with the secondary air pump (smog pump) When it failed the SES lamp comes on, car still driveable, however, the fall back mode when this happens is to switch on the main engine fan, permanently! I got hold of another pump hoping it word sort this out, sadly not! I am still using my car, but as the main fan comes on permanently, not doing any long journeys, worry is that a fan that is only supposed to come on when required, will probably burn out the electric motor on a long trip. To date I have not managed to resolve this issue, all fuzes etc check out fine, and diagnostics don't show anything other than 'it doesn't work' so that's really helpful! I'll keep you posted if and when I get this problem sorted.
I don't think there is much worry of the fan burning out as it runs pretty constant normally and full time when A/C is chosen which as a fat guy is almost all the time for me.
I can say that theC4 generation Corvette is most likely the most reliable of them all. Yes you will have some issues with this and that, but i think the fix is more affordable than the other generations. Having a sorted C4 will bring many many miles of trouble free driving. I would say the 1991 Corvette is the most reliable and also best Corvette ever made.
I think a correction should be made regarding the optispark section: the problem you mentioned is only really an issue with the 92-94 model years. In 95 they altered the design so that the optispark vents out the water and doesn't get ruined by a failing water pump.

I tried new bulbs, new mercury switch and even purchased a new light but it still doesn’t work. It appears to be some type of electrical issue. I am having a hard time finding someone to work on it. Please do a video if you get it repaired!
The only thing that I found on this video that I slightly kind of disagree with is on the air conditioning system converting an r12 system to 134a is really not all that hard or expensive. Other than the system is not leaking I've done it on a handful of cars in the past is put the right amount of peg oil in the system right along with the r12 oil that still in it if the system has been evacuated either due to a week or vacuummed out but the right amount of poundage in the system most Chevy vehicles are around 3 to 3 and 1/2 lb in a system works fine. Yes can you get all new evaporators coils this that and the other yeah that's what expense gets but you can just add the pag oil in the refrigerant in the system will work great.
I purchase a relatively low mileage 1994 vette. The last owner drove it 7K in 17 years. The biggest problem is the radio. The upgraded Bose radio has a control box in the back storage area behind the passenger seat. It had water accumulated in the compartment at sometime. The radio control is fried. Going to be a big expense to get the radio working again.

Not if you drive it til it dies and sell it, you can get a running and driving example for ~4k. Treat it like a dog and have some fun and wreck the thing, can still get ~3k for the parts since older corvette owners are constantly in need of random parts that are no longer mass produced. How do you know if the selective ride control is working or not? Can you hear the motors when selecting or can you easily feel the different settings when driving? Besides that I think one very very important thing to check is that you get the key fobs to the car. Hey how are you, you forgot to mention where the jack goes, where the spare tire is and where the tool for it is. Thank you for sharing everything else that you did bring up. I have a 94 Convertible with 93,000 miles.
That C4 is CLEAN!!!
Nice video. Im a 4 time vette owner (1968, 1977, 1980, 2001) and starting to get the itch again. Was thinking about a 1992 - 1996 and this video gave me a few things to think about!
I'm shopping for a 96 C4 right now. I appreciate you taking your time to explain the things to watch out for.
@@Reaper-cm4jr I've had a trade offer for a '96 LT4 coupe that I'm considering because I think it's a good deal, but I'm doing my research first. It'll be for sale if I do the trade because I've been trying to sell my 65 Cutlass Convertible with no luck. I think the Vette might be easier to sell, and it might be worth a little more than my car which needs refurbishing.
Remind people of the 84 Crossfire. The are great motors, you just have to be VERY MINDFUL of vacuum leaks and fuel pressure.
You covered the most important issues, I believe. Thank you for sharing, it was a great watch!
Well done video. Seen Dec 16, 2023, from Clearwater Beach Florida.
Very informative video. Thanks for many tips on the later C4s

Great vid. I have a mint numbers matching 1964 Sting Ray L76 motor 365hp close ratio Muncie 4 speed 40,100 documented miles. Also have a mint 1996. White with red interior 40k miles. I just replaced the plastic headlights with glass super bright halogens makes a world of difference. Love the C4, turn the key and you are in heaven. Put an after market performance air intake that really made a huge difference. Have a cat back Magna Flow exhaust system on the way. 40 series mufflers, great sound not obnoxious. Also replaced the fog light bulbs with LEDs super bright. Living on the South Carolina Coast I drive the C4 more then the 64 because it has air conditioning, a must down here !
Nice cars man. I went with some aftermarket 5x7 headlights, they are the same ones from the old jeep Cherokee. You can get full LEDs or even sequentials for like $90 a pair, much brighter and better looking than the halogens and will last a lot longer
Going to check out a c3 Sting ray and 86 c4 today, excited to see it!
Having worked on an 89 a bit i couldnt agree more you nailed all the common issues. You should review my 89 it would be hilarious.
Thanks! Great content! I have owned my 85 C-4 for 10 years. Great car! I have only owned Chevy and GMC all my life. Best cars on the road!
If you haven't owned anything else, how would you even know. I bet there so many better cars out there...
Purple. Definitely purple! 😎
great video, I'm just looking for a C4 myself right now, thanks for the advices :)
I have the hotwheel exact same colour and model. Just curious to look if my childhood hotwheels have the exact same model and here it is. Wonderful
Thank you Tom. It was a good information, I consider a ‘85 with about 60k miles.
...cheektogawa? If so, I'm the new owner of that beast lol
Liked & subbed! As a proud, original owner of a 1991 ZR-1, I agree with all your points. My only items needing repair or replacement have been hood and hatch struts, weather stripping and headlight gears. Other 'replacements & modifications' were done for fun, not necessity! ;-) Long Live the Legend ... 🤘 ^v^
Awesome video. Thank you for such a clear and great review, giving this car the respect it deserves. I have a 93 and my passenger side under light doesn’t work either. I tried new bulbs, new mercury switch and even purchased a new light but it still doesn’t work. It appears to be some type of electrical issue. I am having a hard time finding someone to work on it. Please do a video if you get it repaired!
I’ve had a 96... but I now have 86 pace car...and I think you covered about all the bases 😊
Great tips. Looking at a ‘96 this week. Will keep all of this in mind. Thank you.
I just bought a 92 polo green vette
I purchase a relatively low mileage 1994 vette. The last owner drove it 7K in 17 years. The biggest problem is the radio. The upgraded Bose radio has a control box in the back storage area behind the passenger seat. It had water accumulated in the compartment at sometime. The radio control is fried. Going to be a big expense to get the radio working again.
Great comments Tom. I was taking notes as I have yet to close the deal on the one I am looking at. I subscribed also. Thanks again.
Oh sweet! Every time I get out I can feel like a pilot!
C4 is the closest one can get to a F16 cockpit feel IMHO.
Thank you for a very informative video! I’m in the market for a ‘96 and the information you shared will be a big help in evaluating a purchase

FInd a long term older owner, bone stock. Otherwise youll buy a pos money pit you will hate.
Running properly they are extremely reliable
THe most expensive C4 is usually the cheapest
Not if you drive it til it dies and sell it, you can get a running and driving example for ~4k. Treat it like a dog and have some fun and wreck the thing, can still get ~3k for the parts since older corvette owners are constantly in need of random parts that are no longer mass produced. You wreck a 4k civic and its scrap, you wreck a 4k corvette and you have 2k in wheels and tires, 1k exhaust, 1k fiber glass roof, etc
@@camerongreig248 True..drove 88-90 C4s for yrs, cheap to buy and maintain actually reliable and decent mpg. Never paid more than 5k for one...trick is finding a long time owner who overmaintained the car. TOo many roaches out there. Hoping to get one more for a Daily
I just watched your video. You might have mentioned that the spare tire is under the back of the car. The one in mine was as hard as a rock. The good news is that the jack was still there. Tire was junk, but had a good jack. 🤣🤣
I'm thinking to throw my spare away.
I have Hagerty roadside insurance and I would just have the car flat-bedded to a sjop.
Love the color. Not enough appreciation for non-standard colors, we only have this life why not drive an interesting color? Huge fan of BMW's techno violet metallic as well
My perrsonal favourite on C4 is Dark Rose Mettallic.
The more I hear you, the more I crave a C3. Would love to see a video like this on C3s.
I have to be honest and say I was never a fan. They are so underpowered (except the first couple of years).
Most important thing on a C3 is the condition of the birdcage. Everything else is fairly easy.
@@paulmoss7940 Agreed. The additional problem is that the birdcage is difficult to inspect.
Having owned a '94, the ECM/computer mount under the hood is another item to check as they tend to break.
Nearly forgot. The hinges for the storage compartments on the door cards armrest tend to break as well.
Those hinges for the storage compartments in the door panels don't apply to 93 and earlier.
Most beautiful Coevette of all!!
Very nice Vette it's the same color I had, but an even better informative video! You are very good...
Actually the cars with the transparent top had both panels included, but many of the owners lost the body color one alone the way. That happened to mine.
Incorrect. You had to order option code C2L to get both a painted top and transparent one. Otherwise you just got either a painted one or a transparent one (code 24S for blue tint or code 64S for bronze tint)
Great video very informative
I am shopping ....good information.
Wonderful info. Just bought one last week :)
How do you know if the selective ride control is working or not? Can you hear the motors when selecting or can you easily feel the different settings when driving? Besides that I think one very very important thing to check is that you get the key fobs to the car. They are nearly impossible to get if missing and if you're very lucky and find one for sale you will pay hundreds of dollars for it.
Service light will come on if its not working right. I avoid that option
Ididn't care if the adjustable ride control shocks worked or not I replaced the 25 year old selerctive ride control shocks on my 93 as soon as I got it with new Billstein HD shocks.....more than happy with the handling.
@@jeffspicolli593 Oh ok sounds good. Do you need to do anything else to avoid that any warning lights come up? Or will they not show up if you just disconnect the motors of the seclective ride system (not sure if there are any other sensors connected)?
@@NetzKanal To be honest I haven't worried about the light but I have read that it's as simple as going to the compartment behind the drivers seat and unplugging the select ride module screwed to the side, above the ABS unit, that will make your service light go out..
Some purists will cry about disabling FX3 but if you read about it it is really antiquated compared to modern magnetic ride control and I'm not a fan of 30+ year old shocks on my car.
It's the same with Bose Gold there has been a quantum leap in entertainment centres over thirty years.
The TPMS sensors are hiddeous and break when changing tires not to mention the front left for 1993 is unobtanioum.
The sport seat bolster bladders are useless for the 2024 cheesburger crowd as wide open the seat is snug.
Got rid of it all.
Looooooove my Black Rose Metallic LT1.
Curious that you didn't mention the Bose stereo? I'm not sure on the later years but I had a '89 coupe and my dad had a '92 ZR-1, and both had issues with the Bose stereo. It's a pretty straightforward repair if you know how to solder, but if you don't the refurbished amps can be pricey.
any guides on how to repair them?
Thanks for the info.
Had one, rough riding butt buster, headlights go first, they always fail
A beautiful car & color
I love the digital dash on the earlier years of the C4. Feels like I'm missing out without it. Tempted to get an earlier model just for the outdated "futuristic" technology. Plus they're cheap and I love that black trim. How bad of a mistake would I be making?
theres a dude on reddit who got the older dash with upgraded LEDs and it looks sick. but the are prone to failing (unless you have LEDs)
That is a great color. Do you know what it is called? Was it specific to 95?
The color is “black rose metallic.” I don’t know the year range for the color but my 92 is this color as well
@@thetroll8014 Thanks for the reply.
@@thetroll8014 Actually, no, this color is Dark Purple Metallic. Black Rose Metallic was only available from 1992 to 1994, and this car is a 1995. This color is a lighter shade of purple than the old one was.

FX3 repairs per corner being $750. That's not the case. There are plenty of vendors that will sell parts for far less.
