I have spent. All day. Obsessively working on character design. I finally get my brain to slow down, I climb into bed, open up youtube, and look for some asmr to fall asleep to. And again it Haunts me.

Weird way to use this video, probably, but I have already returned a few times to process characters I like and understand them through this. I tend to absorb lots of info but then not know how to sort it later in my head and this helps immensely! (+ I get to silently pretend to be a character I like, what’s not to love with that too haha)

Not finished the video yet, but so far this is very helpful. Here's what I have so far: My character is named Kelvin and he used to be an evil dictator of a world until an event called the Merge happened. The Merge is a concept stolen from a show called Ninjago: Dragons Rising where all of the realms, worlds and dimensions are merged into one. Kelvin finds himself lost and not in control for the first time in his life and he doesn't know what to do. He then sees a lost child named Maria and he sees an opportunity to be in control and be in charge of someone again. Over the course of the story, they eventually start to bond and form a genuine adopted father and daughter relationship. Although they will run into Kelvin's second in command when he used to be a dictator and this is how Maria finds out Kelvin's secret.

I’m making this up as I go along for funsies to make a new imaginary friend
1) Anya De La Araña
2) Buggy
3) Her family started the nickname Buggy is because their name means “Anya of the Spider” in Spanish
4) 41
5) She was born in a different dimension but the same time period that we are in (it’s the same year in their dimension as ours)
6) In a magic-infused pueblo named Fauna in their dimension
7) the Pacific Northwest in the US where I live because we’re besties and roommates. She lives in an underground kooky basement apartment but we share the upstairs kitchen for cooking because she transformed her kitchen into a lab-ish sort of thing for weird magic stuff
8) Her pueblo growing up was more of a commune so there weren’t really social classes per se, but the anti-magic hierarchal government took over and essentially outlawed people like her so her and others in her pueblo became really pressured and poor before she escaped to my dimension. Now she works at a bookstore and makes a little above minimum wage but is still kinda a social outcast here so I guess more mid-lower class
9) Dark blue with brown flecks
10) Brown hair with these like purple undertones (naturally) and medium length, and she has a thick grey stripe in the front
11) Her whole face is pretty distinguished, it’s unusually beautiful for our dimension and she also has a purple-ish light brown mark on her face about the size of a large lemon (called la marca mágica “magic mark” in her dimension, distinguishing her as a magical person)
12) La marca mágica is her main birthmark but she also has some runic tattoos (in dark purple) throughout her body. Kind of like in the show “shadowhunters” (which is based on the book series “the mortal instruments”)
13) Her body heals like unusually fast so though she has been wounded before, she doesn’t have scars
14) She got her tattoos because they essentially enable her to be able to do her magic. In her pueblo the getting of the tattoos was came with celebratory ceremonies and it was an essential part of growing up and advancing your skills as a magic-man/woman/person
15) She’s allergic to very specific types of cursed mosses in her homeland that the anti-magic government would essentially use to cancel them (temporarily) of their powers, and the government was essentially slowly poisoning magic people with them to rid these people off of their land by giving them lethal doses. But she has yet to find these mosses on Earth, though it’s rumored to exist in a far-off forest that she read about in some legend book from the early 1800s. Oh also she has anxiety and some paranoia based off of trauma and the whole being magical thing
16) She’s pretty ambidextrous with most things but writes with her left hand, though her handwriting with either hand is arguably equally terrible
17) She has a pretty animated voice that fluctuates in pitch
18) She doesn’t really follow fashion trends and dresses pretty kooky. Kind of like if the teacher from the magic school bus was a psychic. She’s a fan of hand-dyed fabrics, ruffles, vintage jewelry, tall leather boots, simple sandals, anything with buttons, and large headbands

19) She doesnt really “dress up” or “dress down” per se, she just wears what she wears no matter the occasion
20) I don’t think she wears anything when she’s goes to sleep but that’s none of my business
21) She wears so much jewelry stacked on top of each other every day (not necessarily matching either) and somehow her jewelry is different every day. I honestly don’t know how she affords all of it and am convinced she pulls some sort of magic heist to steal it or somehow barters at thrift stores
22) She calls everything a whoozit and also generally uses language from her homeland that people don’t understand, especially regarding bugs and animals and objects and stuff. The other day she told me to “watch out for those tibbnad turlings” and asked “if you find any pointcrest hopnabber bugs out there, will you let me know?” she also confuses the microwave with the TV and vice versa
23) She in general has ALL the quirks, partially because that’s just her personality, and partially because she’s still adjusting to norms on earth though. She also partially doesn’t really care about following norms though so she just does what she wants and what makes her happy. I’ve seen her wear socks as hand warmers and use lipstick on her eyes
24) She’s very open to trying substances given her curiosity and open-mindedness. She’s not addicted to anything but will do most things “in the name of discovery and science”. Also she’s almost always nearly starting fires in her kitchen/lab thingy. And she’s very into conspiracy theories. She’s very much a “all the legends are probably true” kind of person but honestly I can’t blame her
25) I think her main aspiration is to overthrow the government in her homeland and exist freely in her pueblo and see her people have freedom and justice, but she recognizes that her and others like her escaped for a reason and aren’t in a position to fight back right now. Another possible aspiration would be to make a thriving community of people like her on Earth, but she knows that thats a risky endeavor as well
26) No, she’s a really bad driver because she’s so easily distracted. She doesn’t understand why we can’t just have flying gliders and horses like in her homeland
27) Current state of mind is aloof (like usual), pensive, optimistic, eager, and also deep down grieving deeply for her family and homeland (though she tends to suppress it)

From the start I could tell Anya "Buggy" would be a well developed, complex character. The magic mark! And magic tattoos! I'd imagine there's heavy lingering trauma what with the cursed mosses and being driven away. I wouldn't step foot in a forest.

Ok tackling part 2 until my brain can turn off from all the after work stress c:
28) She doesn’t really know her family’s fate since she’s escaped the planet and they’re all still there…she has a device that she’s been working on to try to reach them in their dimension without success. She left behind her twin sister who she loves and misses dearly, but her sister chose to stay because she’s married to a wealthy non-magical man and was able to blend in with the rest of non-magic society in the other dimension.
29) No spouse or partner
30) I don’t think she wants to start her own family..she just wants her original family back :’) but here on earth she has me and all of the random bugs she brings home
31) Her dad is (was? who knows..) a tough man, protecting their family at all costs. He had to make a hard decision in taking out a loan from the magic cartel in order to get what was needed to transport Anya to Earth…he doesn’t talk much about emotions but there is nothing he wouldn’t do for those he is loyal to. He does not have magical abilities
32) Her mother (is? was?) also strong-willed and stubborn, emotional, and almost as kooky as Anya. Her magic power is briefly channeling a specific ability of fauna to either herself or others (such as speed, smell, camoflauge, etc) as long as the animal was nearby (kind of like a temporary magical energy transfer). So naturally she spent most of her time surrounded by animals
33) She’s not close to any of them at the moment :(
34) She wishes she were closer to all of them but especially her sister

37) One twin sister, looks similar to Anya but no gray stripe of hair. Her name is Alana and her and Anya are opposites in a lot of ways (Alana is more practical) but they always were attached at the hip. Alana helped Anya remain cautious; Anya helped Alana remain curious. She also has an older brother but he abandoned the family to join the anti-magic military at 18 out of spite because he was jealous that he wasn’t born with magic abilities, and that jealousy turned into hatred of his own family. He’s evil and his betrayal hurt the family deeply, so we don’t really talk about him :/

Thought about my Shifter Warlock I’m making for my new DnD campaign. He’s trusting and believes in pure freedom - very akin to modern day anarchism. He loved once but it went horribly wrong for her due to jealousy of another man, she’s either dead or enslaved- he doesn’t know - and that’s when his Fae patron appeared to him and offered her power. The (somewhat obvious) irony of her powers and gifts is that he believes in truth to yourself and freedom yet she bestows trickery and coercive techniques. He’s not begrudging with her though, he appreciates her help and though he hopes to be out of their contract eventually he holds no animosity to her.
For a point of reference for Roran, he’s like Son Wukong mixed with Naruto in his disposition and emotions, and when he fights he’s like kid Goku.
His flaws are in him being too trusting and that he’s very against authority (possibly due to whoever caused his love interest to be endangered, im not sure yet) to the point where he’ll sometimes snap and berate those ‘above’ him.
His goal is to give freedom and equality to the world no matter the cost
