The tanto design is my favorite style because of how beautiful it is in its simplicity. I love the white G10 handles you used, it compliments that, the whole build is just a work of art.
Hi Jeremy. Just a quick note to let you know that the Tanto arrived in my mail box, all the way here in Sydney Australia, today. I fell in love with this knife just looking at the intro shot to the video and holding it in my hand, all I can say is thank you so much for putting so much love and talent into your work. To everyone else, Jeremy's knife making skills are amazing and his pricing just can't be beaten. If you are looking for a great knife at a great price, homestead knives is the place to shop. Thanks again Jeremy. Extremely happy.
Thank you very much! I'm always worried that I'd just be making the same video just a little different. But when I look at a lot of the youtubers that I enjoy they'll typically do slight variations of similar projects as well so I guess it's not all that bad. Glad you enjoy them for sure and appreciate the support. Cheers!
I love you're kind of content. You do things other knife making channels do but in a lot more detail and better quality, love watching your videos keep it up!
Hey I would like to tell you that you are the best chanel for making knifes out there. I'm watching this kind of videos for over a year and you are definitely my favorite. You explain everything very good, the format of the video is great and I like your taste; the outro, the music everything. :)
This is super informative! I just finished my first knife (bushcraft) by watching your "How to make a knife" video and I'm going to try to make a tanto for my friend's uncle who got me a bunch of exotic wood for handles and this video gives me a good idea how to do it
Howdy! I love all of your content! Rest assured, no one is going to get tired of your knife building videos. The video quality and your ability to explain and educate is the best that I have seen. To be honest, your videos are what has inspired me to try my hand at knife making. My two cents, make what you like; it's all great stuff and will be a pleasure to watch! Happy holidays to you and your family!
Thank you very much. I really appreciate the compliments and I'm glad you're excited to get going on knife making. You and your family have a Merry Christmas as well. Cheers!
@@Simplelittlelife we did it very old school . I found a guy that sold coal and i met him at gas station to pay for it i am talkin years ago we had a forge set up with a airline goin to it think we tried using a old lawnmower blade but then it broke lol . It was fun .
That is a very handsome knife Jeremy! There's always something to learn from your videos: I got two new ideas from this one, first, I liked how you used a clamp on your drill press as a guide/pivot point during drilling, and second, the hollow grind on the handle to reduce weight. Clever! Cheers mate, John.
+A. Parsons I use an even heat kiln but before I got that I used an acetylene torch. Whatever way you came come up with to evenly get the blade to around 1475 degrees F (assuming it's a carbon steel like 1095,1085 or O-1 you're using). Cheers!
I'm working on my first knife. It's a tanto as I love the style! I've made the main shape of the blade and handle but when drilling the holes in the handle I drilled one hole fine but my dill bit melted in the second hole and I thing the metal has hardened because all the new drill bits I use break instantly! I don't have much money to risk buying more drill bits just to have them break as well! Should I cut my losses and grind a spike like hidden tang to put into a wooden handle or is it possible to redrill the hardened hole to save the full tang?
dom sturman Hi I have never built a knife my self, however, this intrigues me. Are you using quality drill bits? Melting? When the bit quits cutting you need to re sharpen it. Perhaps some cutting oil would help. Also, you may need to start with a smaller hole first, then progressively go to a larger bit. It sounds like you may be using an old file for your knife blank, in that case, you will need to anneal the metal.
Very instructional video. I have really come to like your video presentations, they are very well done and of a professional quality. Just wondering, is there a video of your "container" shop. I remember once you mentioned it was in a container.
I don't know as I'm currently traveling right now, but they seemed to be a fairly common thickness like schedule 40 or something. It is a seamless stainless steel pipe I bought though. Cheers!
For small little areas I just use sharpie because there is always one laying on my bench and it's fast and easy. But I do use layout day when I'm doing a larger layout for sure. I do really like using layout die. BTW, the Bruins are my sons favourite team so I live your profile image:) Cheers!
Love it Jeremy. I'll have one if you feel I've shipping to Australia again. I still owe you for the sanding block shipping. Have you ever made matching g10 sheaths. Would look great on this knife. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I certainly can send one your way for sure:) I really like the idea of G-10 sheaths and I totally see (in my head) how it would suite this blade really well. Thanks for putting that in my mind. Cheers!
Thanks Jeremy. I'll email you about the knife. Thanks for the great videos this year and thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to you and the family. Frank.
I just purchase one of your mini tantos from your website , I was wondering if this tanto is the same size and blade length as your mini? Thanks again, great video
Mostly I use O-1 tool steel but I'm starting to venture out and try some SS steels. Testing some stuff and figuring out my heat treat on some 154CM as well as some CPM154. But O-1 has been my go-to for a long time:)
They are some S/S seamless pipe I picked up at Metal Supermarkets. I go there quite a bit and just search thought their off-cuts and usually find a few interesting options for pin material. Metal Supermarkets has locations across Canada and the US. Google them and maybe there's something near you. Cheers!
Hey Yuting. I dropped it off in the mail this morning and I just fulfilled the order so you should have an email with the tracking number. Let me know if you don't get it. Cheers!
Simple Little Life Hi Jeremy, I got the email this morning, can't wait to get it work on my first knife. I will sent you some pictures after it finished.
Looks good Jeremy, a nice classy piece! Have you ever done a tapered tang? I think that would greatly reduce the weight as well, especially using .25" stock.
Thanks buddy! No I haven't done a tampered tang yet but it's on my list. I'm still trying to sort out how exactly I would do it. The thing I have the hardest time getting around and it's probably nothing, but I worry about drilling the holes and getting them all to line up plumb when the tang is angled. It's probably like most things: just start doing it and you'll figure it out:)
Simple Little Life what if you drill the holes first, and after that you make the tang tapered? (I don't know if it works, but it was the first thing I thought of)
Yeah it sounds like it would work but I'm wondering about installing the pins during glue up after the tang has been tapered. the holes drilled in the scales would then be slanted due to the taper of the tang. Although I'm sure it's something that doesn't even need to be worried about. Things like this hold me back all the time and then when I just say who cares and start doing them, it's amazing how easy they are and the "problems" I was worrying about in my head don't even exist. :)
haha thanks! I'm always worried that they'll just get boring and kind of become the same thing over and over again.... But I'm glad you enjoy them. Cheers!
Yeah I do but I've only done one video where I use it. I do like wood for scale for sure. It's also probably easier to get small pieces of hardwood than synthetics like G-10 and micarta if you're just starting with knife making. I hope your knife making journey is as enjoyable for you as it has been for me. Good luck and enjoy! Cheers!
I love your videos and am beginning to watch all of them. I noticed your Milwaukee porta-band saw. What is the round table on it? Did you make it or buy it? Do you cut much titanium with the Milwaukee band saw? thanks
Thanks you very much! I really appreciate your videos. I'm just getting started on knife making and your videos have been really enjoyable, and informative.
Help with sketchup please: whenever I make a knife outline it makes the knife a solid white shape. This then covers all other lines I've made within that shape, such as a centerline. Any way to not make it a solid shape and just keep it as outlines? Thanks.
Oh man I really don't know on that one. I literally just open sketchup and start using it and it's always worked. that sounds really weird and frustrating. Sorry I don't have an answer for you.
I use mostly Dormer and SKS. Those are fairly pricey but they do last a good long while. Also one thing that isn't too noticeable in this video is I do tend to go heavy on the cutting fluid. Cheers!

As always a work of art. I would buy that exact design with black G-10 and a nice green or white liner.
Thanks! Ooooh. Those colours sounds nice!
Very Nice!
beautiful 👏👏👏

Is O1 tool steel softer than 1095? I can never drill my holes in 1095 without annealing it first. Do you have any tips for drilling the holes?
Anneal it first
Well done
Thank you very much!
What are you using to hear treat it? And what might be some alternatives to that specific machine?
Heat ** treat it, sorry

Do you prefer the Sharpie to layout fluid? Also, do you make butcher's knives (skinners, boning knives, cleavers, filets, etc.?)
Edward Spencer layout fluid is pretty expensive and if your making not very expensive knives it is not worth it

Very nice breed. was surprised by the weight reduction.
Thanks. Yeah, I was quite surprised too. I was curious about it one day so I thought I might as well weight it during a video. Cheers!
This is probably a bad question, but were did you buy your white g10? I keep looking for it online and not having much luck.

Thanks you very much! I really appreciate your videos. I'm just getting started on knife making and your videos have been really enjoyable, and informative.
What degree of angle do you cut your tanto edge?

No sorry l watch his videos but it's not the sanding block the thing on that bit of wood
It's a toggle clamp. have a look at: a.co/bjsLAut

how much watt is your drill press?
I'm not sure exactly. I have two, both are bench top models and neither of them are overly powerful.
+Simple Little Life alright. what do you think off an 300 watt drill press. can it do the things you do?
I think that would come in at just under 1/2HP and that would do this stuff for sure, but you might just have to take it easy. Run it nice and slow and see how it does:) Cheers!
