That new Aesop album is fantastic.
Great List! After the Magic is an otherworldly record full of details with an outstanding production. I got sucked into a world nearby the other end of the milky way, where everything is full of brightness and completeness. I’m glad that you mentioned Sufjan Stevens. He manifests himself as one of the greatest Lyricists I‘ve ever heard. Javelin contains delicately sounds which embrace the Listener.
Yussef Dayes - Black Classical Music - double LP. It’s amazing! I’m pretty sure you would enjoy it.
yeah, this one just got on my radar recently but haven't had time to sit with it
This one is in my top 10 for sure 😎
Blondshell, Gladie, Bully, and the Portland bands Glitterfox, Nonbinary Girlfriend, and Soft Cheese all put out awesome records this year
yess love to see The National taking number 1. Those two are my favorite of the year for sure. Sufjan and Boygenius are also in my top 5. But also Armand Hammer's new one, Black Country New Road. I also loved Maps by Billy Woods, Geese, Caroline Polachek, Bully.
I’m dreading doing my top 10 on my channel 😮 but I love your videos always gives me happiness 😊
My album of the year has to be Barry Can’t Sleep - When Will We Land. This album is just straight fire. No skipable tracks in the bunch. The fusion of R&B, Pop, Afro pop, Disco, and house is in a word: Infectious
I've been a record dealer since 1978 and you are spot on with The Nationals Album I would put it at the top cracking album.
Been listening to Once Upon A Poolside in a loop since watching this video. Thank you Matt beyond belief. 🙏

Good stuff Bro
Great list, Matt! Thank you for the shout out. The Svaneborg Kardyb album is from 2022, though. I had to double-check after you mentioned it.
I'm so happy you found Ana Frango Életrico's music. You'll LOVE her previous albums. You should also check out the compilation album Mr. Bongo put out this year called Hidden Waters, that collects current Rio musicians including Ana.
I'll definitely check out a few albums from your list.
Here's mine (I couldn't do 10, so I did 20 in alphabetical order, because I also couldn't rank them):
A. Savage: Several Songs About Fire - the Parquet Courts mainman's new solo album made with John Parish, Jack Cooper and Cate Le Bon among others. Wonderfully warm and organic sounding LP. Check it out because you liked Daniele Luppi's Milano album.
Ana Frango Elétrico: Me Chama De Gato Que Eu Sou Sua - yes, I love this, too.
Bar Italia: Tracey Denim - indie-rock indebted to 80's dark wave and C86 bands.
Colored Lights: Colored Lights - Elephant 6 type music from Norway. 15 songs in under 30 minutes. Hooks galore.
Daniel Villarreal: Lados B - cool latin jazz funk.
Devendra Banhart: Flying Wig - produced and co-written by Cate Le Bon with predictably eccentric results. A very enjoyable listen.
Dina Ögon: Oas - the secretive Swedes did it again. Charming indie-pop with feel and groove.
Enji: Ulaan - female vocal jazz from Mongolia by way of Berlin. A very soothing listen.
Ghost Woman: Hindsight 50/50 - AAA album recorded at Kerwax Studios in Bretagne, France. Dark indie-rock in the vein of early BRMC
John Andrews & The Yawns: Love For The Underdog - the Quilt drummer's new one with warm keyboards and laid back grooves.
Jonathan Wilson: Eat The Worm - masterful singer-songwriter album from the producer, multiinstrumentalist, guitar builder and Roger Waters tour guitarist.
Meg Baird: Furling - the ex-Espers singer's heavenly, magical folk-rock album.
Nick Waterhouse: The Fooler - another analogue wizard's new one in glorious mono with tunes you'd swera were old hits.
Night Beats: Rajan - Danny Lee Blackwell's psych-tastic new album for fans of King Gizz, but without the quirk and the odd time-signatures. Ambrose shows up on a few tracks, too.
Sachiko Kanenobu: Fork In The Road - a welcome return from the obscure 70s Japanese folk-rock singer. Blues-y, folky, wonderful.
Shintaro Sakamoto: Like A Fable - funky city pop fun from Japan.
The Arcs: Electrophonic Chronic - Dan Auerbach & co's second album is a tribute to their friend and bandmate, the late Richard Swift. Killer grooves, punchy production that screams to be spun on wax.
The Clientele: I Am Not There Anymore - Alasdair MacLean & co's latest is more adventurous and eclectic than their usual fare, yet still unmistakeably sounds like nothing else, but them.
Willie J. Healey: Bunny - the young singer-songwriter's third album of timeless, laid-back, groovy melodies.
Yo La Tengo: This Stupid World - they still got it. Another stellar offering in their expansive catalogue.
Honorable mentions (also kind of cheating, because both of these are 2020 albums, only the vinyl version is from 2023):
Caetano Veloso: Meu Coco - even into his 70s (he made this one when he was 78) his music is full of life and ideas. No sign of stopping, or even slowing down.
Daniel Ögren: Fastingen 92 - Mr. Bongo thankfully re-issued this very limited-run Swedish wonder of an album. Uncategorizeable, varied, uplifting music.
This is a lot to tackle. I didn't even realize YLT put out a new one this year.
great list
the new HEALTH "Rat Wars" album that dropped December 7th is my AOTY! Phenomenal! (Neo-Industrial / Noise Rock / Synthwave / Ambient) Such a cool band! Start with the Songs "Unloved", "Children of Sorrow" and "Sicko"
Oh man I didn't even know HEALTH dropped a new record. I mentioned them in this video!
@@TooManyRecords Yep! ;). It's their best album. Incredible!
Well, Matt, thank you once again for giving me some new music to listen to. Selfishly, I wish you had combined both National albums into one entry so we’d have an extra album in the top 10, but it’s your list! And instead of listing my top 10 or 20 this year, I will say that Paramore is #1 for me. Sufjan is #4. But here are a few albums that are high on my list of about 30 albums I loved this year, a few that you possibly haven’t heard or listened to…
Constant Smiles - “Kenneth Anger”
The Murder Capital - “Gigi’s Recovery”
Steady Holiday - “Newfound Oxygen”
DJ Shadow - “Action Adventure”
Nation of Language - “Strange Disciple”
I honestly haven’t finalized my Top 20. Like any of us, my all-time favorite artists are in there, but they aren’t albums I’m going to recommend, because I know they hit me differently than others, just like The National hits you. Metric, Lana Del Rey, Depeche Mode, Sigur Rós, M83. These are artists whom I love and are almost guaranteed to be in my top 20 any year they release albums. Thanks for everything, Matt!

If you haven’t listened to, Blondshell, I believe you will love this album. My favorite of the year. 90s grunge that is fresh. Think Hole Live through this…
Sounds up my alley
Would totally recommend Calm Ya Farm by The Murlocs. A couple members from King Gizzard are in the band and it’s such a fun listen. It’s folky, bluesy, a little trippy, and all around an incredible album
Always end up finding something new when you do these. Grabbed Eric Hilton's disc last night.
For me? A couple I'd add are
Jada G's "Guy" - it occupies a similar space as Beyonce's renaissance
Moby's "Resound NYC" - It's that desire to do orchestral versions of hits that everyone has. This one, though, sounds fresh to me.
Absolutely love your top 2
What about number 3???
@@TooManyRecords Just missed my top 10. ;)
Great stuff, makes me want to go listen to Sufjan Stevens, the National right away.
my job is done.
I saw Hayden Pedigo open for Ichiko Aoba…who I discovered off another one of your vids. Both amazing Live. After that show I became obsessed with collecting Ichiko’s “Pastel” series of albums (so far only on cd since they’re so damned expensive). Thanks for the surprises!
Wow, that would have been a killer show.
Definitely some stuff I need to check out My favorite album of the year is undoubtedly Blómi by Susanne Sundfør, really led me to rediscover her again this year
My full top ten atm would be ( even though it shifts every day):
1. Blómi - Susanne Sundfør

3. boygenius the record
4. Sufjan Stevens Javelin
5. Joanna Sternberg - I’ve Got Me
6. Mitski The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
7. laufey bewitched
I highly recommend you to listen to my Album of the Year „Suntub“ by ML Buch. Nothing had prepared me for this wonderful experience, I’m deeply in love with this magnificent record. The Album moves impressively through different styles, including distorted guitar elements and dreamy tunes. A gorgeous contrast. Definitely a hidden gem!!!
1. Unforgiven by Le sserafim - kpop girl group its a fun album every track is loud and fun and does so much
2. Scaring the Hoes by Jpegmafia and Danny Brown - a indie hip hop album with the weirdest beats and rapping and just so fun
3. Guts by Olivia Rodrigo - pop punk fun so much teen angst and just everything I wanted from a follow up album from her
4. Girl with Fish by Feeble Little Horse - Philadelphia band that's weird and such imaginative lyrics with interesting stories
5. Bewitched by Laufey - Jazz pop such a beautiful record
6. Sail the Seven Seas by Park Hye Jin- came out Monday but a Korean Techno artist in the states just interesting and fun
7. Super Snõõper by Snõõper - fun short punk album

9. PetroDragonic … by King Gizzard - kglw back at it again with an album with wild themes and it all works together
10. Sit Down for Dinner by Blonde Redhead - really beautiful record by maybe my favorite band
and some honorable mentions / Hellmode by Jeff Rossenstock / get up EP by NewJeans / In Times New Roman by Queens of the stone age / 10,000 gecs by 100 Gecs / new dance EP by XG / both re records of Taylor but feels mean to others for her to take the top two spots
I need to check some of these out. I didn't have time to listen to Olivia and wanted to.
@@TooManyRecords I like Olivia’s upbeat pop rock stuff (especially “Get Him Back!” and “Bad Idea Right”), but I think her balladry skills need some refinement. She’s definitely not on the level of Sufjan Stevens when it comes to writing mellow songs.
The best vinyl release of 2023 is undoubtedly Australia's Private Function's 370HSSV 0773H
Before the record was released, the vinyl release was banned from international and South Australian release. It later had to get special government clearance to be released in South Australia.
The reason is that the vinyl edition contained a special Scratchie album cover where you could win $2999, a test pressing and your face on every subsequent Pressing of the record. You just had to scratch the cover and get three of the same images.
There were a ton of crazy pressings released including two liquid filled record releases which were filled with the band's beer brand and another with the band member's urine.
The music itself is fantastic Australian punk with the band going into metal subgenres for some songs
My top 5:
Ryuichi Sakamoto 12
Billy Batts & The Made Men MY Empire Is Crumbling
Andy The Doorbum Of Tears
Enforced War Remains
Slowdive Everything Is Alive
You may be familiar with them but think you may like these ones:
Mj Lenderman Boat Songs
Wednesday Rat Saw God
5. 'Death Pill' by Death Pill
4. 'Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle' by Moonlight Sorcery
3. 'Yallah Beibe' by MC YALLAH
2. 'Sator Arepo' by Judgitzu
1. 'Seasons Dreaming Death' by GraveRipper
I like this vid!!
Hey thanks!
Thanks for making it
For what it's worth, the Svaneborg Kardyb LP was released over a year ago, in 2022.
Islands In The Sky by Death Valley Girls is by far my favorite of 2023.
Carly, SZA, and Lana put out HEAT this year!
Parannoul and Ana Frango are super awesome picks here
In France, the best album of the year is definitely La symphonie des éclairs by Zaho de Sagazan. She went from absolutely unknown to super star in one year. Thanks for the video !
I definitely recommend this album
Definitely digging the Sufjan Stevens ranking. Digging the Westerman and Model/Actriz albums. Love for The National, Paramore, and boygenius too. My album of the year has to go to Lana Del Rey and Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard. It’s her best since NFR!
I'm not gonna lie... I didn't have a chance to listen to it in full. I need to do it.
My favorites that you didn’t me mention are: Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit- weathervanes, taking back Sunday - 152 ( I was shocked how much I loved this one, as the band has felt a little stale for a while) , Foo Fighters- But Here We Are.
Also loved both the National records (although I like Laugh Track over Frankenstein) and that boygenious record as well
Lots of stuff I haven't heard on your list. Thanks. Will check them out. I only did a Top 5. Sufjan would have made the list if I did a Top 10. I've been meaning to give that boygenius album another try. Didn't to it for me when it came out.
1. Deer Tick - Emotional Contracts
2. Blur - The Ballad of Darren
3. Wednesday - Rat Saw God
4. Colter Wall - Little Songs
5. Jaimie Branch - Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
Honorable mentions:
- Helena Deland - Goodnight Summerland
- The Clientele - I Am Not There Anymore
Album of year 2023
1. Paramore This Is Why
2. The National First Two Pages of Frankenstein
3. boygenius the record
4. Sufjan Stevens Javelin
5. Joanna Sternberg - I’ve Got Me
6. Mitski The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
7. laufey bewitched
Nice! Someone played me The Clientele the other day and I really enjoyed it.
Jason Isbell and the 400 unit - Weathervanes, Hammock - Love in the void, and Noah Gundersen - If This is the End are all in my top 10
The Clientele - I Am Not There Anymore
Nas capped off this incredible 3-year, 6-album run with arguably one of his greatest ever in Magic 3. That is easily my album of the year. Also, MICHAEL by Killer Mike is up there as well.
Two of my favs this year:
Eli & Harry - The Breathing Effect
The Loneliest Time - Carly Rae Jepsen
I'm too tired at the moment to put them in any kind of order (especially depending on my mood on a given day), but here are my favorites of 2023
Andy Shauf - Norm
Hayden - Are We Good (the limited premium heavy cloth book bound signed record jacket with the embossed DIY guitar case on the cover was a very nice surprise)
Midlake - Antiphon
En Attendant Ana - Principia
White Reaper - Asking for a Ride
Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World
Death Cab For Cutie - Asphalt Meadows (Acoustic)
Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit - Weathervanes
Beach Fossils - Bunny
M. Ward - Supernatural Thing
Slowdive - Everything Is Alive
Blonde Redhead - Sit Down For Dinner
Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
Honorable mention:
** Bart Davenport - Game Preserve (technically a 2003 release but only discovered it on this year's excellent AAA 20th anniversary "Mimosa Marbled" vinyl repress)
EDIT: I realized I had to remove The Mountain Goats - Dark In Here which was 2021 but I only finally picked up this year.
Cheers!
Off the top of my head there are 2 albums that I can think of, and in no particular order.
1. The Ironsides- Changing Light.
2. Jalen Ngonda- Come Around And Love Me.
These are beyond great. Jalen Ngonda is a breath of fresh air in the soul genre. And the The Ironsides is like a European cinematic instrumental but very soulful. Hope you get a chance to listen to these
OMG FINALLY someone else who picked up Jalen Ngonda on Daptone! ❤
@@false_binary I bought 4 different varients of it. I have the daptone clear w/ black splatter, The Plaid Room cotton candy splatter, The VMP orange dreamsicle, and The Dinked Edition with the alternative cover from the UK.
@@booieaguilar4792 My man! I got the splatter w/the 7 inch. - my wife is asking to hear this now more than Black Pumas' Chronicles of a Diamond (which is a close 2nd for me too).
@@false_binary I saw him in concert a couple months ago for a date night with my wife too and got to meet him and talk to him. Great guy. Got a Polaroid pic with him and signed my alternative cover Dinked version ( I was tempted to take all 4 for him to sign but I would have been embarrassed lol)
@@booieaguilar4792 That would have been hilarious. That is an awesome night out!
I been enjoying Roger Waters The Dark Side of the Moon Redux. And Peter Gabriel's Album I/O and Steven Wilson's The Harmony Codex. Then also been enjoying Low Roar music.
My top five perfectly mastered to vinyl releases from 2023 ....
NEW: Gorillaz - Cracker Island, Jalen Ngonda - Come Around & Love Me, & Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman
Reissue Favs: Sonny Clark Trio - Tone Poet & New Order Substance 1987 (destroys the OG)
Glad you put the national at 1 and 2. So much to dive into those albums including "Space Invader", "Tour Manager", and many others. Here's my part 2 of my conversation with Barcles regarding our ranking of the back half of their catalog, albums 6-10.
ua-cam.com/video/1rwFB8QDvg8/v-deo.html
Welp, I feel old. I recognized maybe three bands. Although my tastes are definitely different, there were a few albums that I added to my pretend streaming album collection.
Salenta + Topu - Moon Set, Moon Rise
that is a WONDERFUL record!!!! love it so much.

Endless by Clowns is my #1 of the year.
Surprisingly, one of only a few albums released by Fat Wreck Chords in 2023. Back in the 90s and the 00s, they were one of the most prolific American punk labels out there.
There was the Frenzal Rhomb album, Fat Mike’s weird orchestra thing, and some EP’s, but I think they were more focused on getting the Bottles To The Ground side label going this year.
as soon as i saw model/actriz was in the list - i hoped 'Mspaint' would be on here :(

This list is ok, but have you heard the Shrek 2 soundtrack?
Oooh, I gotta listen!
Svaneborg Kardyb is from 2022.
whoops!! end of 2022. My bad. At least it was an honorable mention haha
@@TooManyRecords Forgot to add... if you like Svaneborg Kardyb, you will love Bremer/McCoy as well. Also two danish guys making beautiful music
@@nicolasdoriaadethansen2259 Do they lean more traditional jazz? I'm really not into standard/modal type stuff.
I wouldn't say that, no. I listen to a lot of music from Blue Note, Impulse, Riverside etc. and it can't really be compared. @@TooManyRecords
I thought Pink’s record was awesome and also Chris Stapleton
Great top albums list! My only disappointment is that The Midnight Callers’ “Rattled Humming Heart” did not make it. It’s by far the best album of 2023. Other than that, great job! Cheers 🍻 Matt
I’ve officially reached the age where I know nothing about contemporary music. I basically just found out about Death Grips
But this Friday new Kanye drops 😮
Yeah... a collab album. Could be good, could be awful - I've heard snippets, I'm cautiously optimistic but skeptical.
*Say She She!*
'Silver' is one of the best Soul records of the last decade, let alone just last year.
