This is the new Schrade SCHPR1, which will be released soon in the new year. They didn't tell me what the steel was, so I tested it cautiously at first, but after smashing it through many pieces of wood I developed morefaith in it and can say it hits hard and is a lot more thick and durable than the previous light parang machete from Schrade.
Great review, looks like Schrade is trying to compete with Condor's Bushcraft Parang, it would be interesting to see those two in a head to head comparison. When do you think it will be out?
Parang is originated from Sarawak Borneo...our tribe ie Iban used this type since early stage and we called this "Duku Chandong"..easy to use and all round in any jungle terrain.
I love parangs! The Mini Duku from Condor is my absolute favorite. Hopefully the price of this one will make sense in adding it to the collection. Cheers Blazin'Blades
I know you mentioned that you wanted to sharpen the first few inches of the blade, but that is the traditional location to choke up on the blade for finer work like the feather sticks you made.
1070 and it's gonna be $50 or $60, 3cr13 or 8cr13 and it'll be $30 to $40. 1070 and it's up against Condor, the king of machetes, 3cr13 or 8cr13 and it's up against no one worth while. If it was my call it wouldn't be 1070, I'd rather be the budget champ than get knocked out by the king.
I'm not sure why 3cr13 is berated..especially for machete uses. It's hardness range is the same as other 1095 1070 machete in the 50 to 55 range. Easy to file sharpen. And 3cr is very tough. I'd like the stainless aspect..very nice.
Truthfully, it is not the best steel, but it is acceptable for the good price, and as you mentioned it is very corrosion resistant. Think of this parang as sort of like a hatchet from the hardware store, crude but still a useful work horse outside.
- Sharpen 1 to 1.5 inch more towards the handle, I see too many wasted spaces for safety sake. - Thinner the spine by removing the steel from the spine to middle of the blade, but keep the overall thickness, to reduce weight. - 1095 would be great for blade steel. - Make the Kydex version for the sheath. It would cost around 30$ more, but worth it. I think the intended MSRP for this Parang would be around 45 - 50 $ so Schrade may choose the just ok quality material. Affordable is their motto.
hey, is there any chance of you doing a morris billhook? they are the traditional english machete equivalent, or the terava skrama from varusteleka, they seem to be quite popular on the bushcraft scene at the min but they are also cool bigger blades, thanks!
I wonder if schrade will continue their tradition of naming machetes wrong and call this parang the schbarong or the schgolok like they did the schbolo?
don't laugh but I have a Bear Grylls parang and it works great I also have Condor stuff and bark River knives but for a beater I use my Bear Grylls parang
I'm sorry to hear that. Budget blades are always risky. I have a Myparang Parang from Malaysia, very high quality, they are a bit over $100, but well worth it, 5160 High Carbon Steel.
I didn’t even though you were still making videos this whole time I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting and then I typed in a certain machete and find a video from you just to see that you’re still on here and that I was unsubscribed months and months ago why??? I don’t understand why I would be else unsubscribe

I love this blade..glad I got 3 of them before they discontinued it.

Sorry, I meant to say the first few inches that are already sharpened, but could be sharper.
WeAllJuggleKnives Roger that brother!
Which do you prefer: this or the Marbles parang?
i love parang styled blades! seems like a winner!
Did it rust? Guessing their 3Cr13MoV, but could be their 1070. They do a good job with both.

How thick is the blade? Thanks!
Finally, a stainless steel parang for tropical jungle! How has it been holding up? Is 3Cr13 a strong steel?
Truthfully, it is not the best steel, but it is acceptable for the good price, and as you mentioned it is very corrosion resistant. Think of this parang as sort of like a hatchet from the hardware store, crude but still a useful work horse outside.
Now I need your recommendation, I'm down to either Condor Mini Duku or Condor Eco Parang. I'm 160cm and 51kg. Which one is the best for me?
I would pick the Condor Eco Parang or the Condor Bushcraft Parang
Thank you
OH NO! Not another great parang! Must resist temptation........ must resist... Crap, it's on my list. Yeah, I'm a parang addict.
Does it have a sheath??

what was the blade thickness
Nice knock off of the Condor Bushcraft Parang. (Which is a knock off of native ones). I'm betting its a type of China stainless, so... Maybe not.
What do you mean native ones?

Sadly they don't seem to sell those on our Amazon. I use a Helko Billhook, it's made in Italy and pretty good.
ahh i see, well no worries, thanks for the reply, i'm a big fan!
The steel is 3cr13.
Very nice tool. Thanks for video
You havent been to east texas for jungle
nice parang
im still using my duku chandung
try other blade, but duku chandung is still my favorite
is it stabile for long time with some heavy work i saw its a rat tail
WAJK- How does that compare to a kukhuri for chopping?
I think Khukuris, E-neps, Parangs, and Goloks are all pretty equal as choppers.
Thanks.
Thanks for the review and video. I think I might want to get it!
Wood it work in a swamp
Are you from the Philippines oh and awesome video
Thank you, I am indeed half Filipino
shrade parang like most cr13 steel. i was a shrade fan until they turned junk i had to sell every shrade i had so i didnt have to see none break
I've been waiting for this review :-)
I hope it changed your life :]
Hope it's 1070.
top notch
I wonder if schrade will continue their tradition of naming machetes wrong and call this parang the schbarong or the schgolok like they did the schbolo?
That would be funny. I think they should call it the "Non-Eco Parang" since Condor has all the Eco ones LOL.
again: what abut the mah'chete?
It's still on the list, I'll make a video on it eventually
WeAllJuggleKnives
so I guess that kinda answers the questions whether crkt gets you something for testing once in a while
it would be great if it was 1095 but its probably 3cr
real metis Ya probably 3Cr, like most of their machette.
dont right them off just yet, Jessica X was 1075
Rick Grimes let's hope
don't laugh but I have a Bear Grylls parang and it works great I also have Condor stuff and bark River knives but for a beater I use my Bear Grylls parang
I'm gonna get one. Not today. Not tomorrow. But I'm gonna get one.
I hope it isn't some kind of stainless steel cause I'm gonna freak out !!!! ....
I think it is, but if enough people ask them they will change the steel.
mine broke in half the first time I used it. shrade would not help at all. stay away.
I'm sorry to hear that. Budget blades are always risky. I have a Myparang Parang from Malaysia, very high quality, they are a bit over $100, but well worth it, 5160 High Carbon Steel.
Say Heah Is, It's 3Cr13, and it comes in two sizes a 18" and a 21" . ,, .

SCHRADE dont make good knives no more !!!
They got sold a while back to Smith & Wesson, so they don't have the same people running it as back in the day.
