Im so glad i found this even thiit was 8 years later. :) im in a class right now and am not learning much about the court cards. This video is everything!! I finally get it. Thank you!! Absolutely incredible!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I even took notes. I've been reading intuitively for friends/family for years, and have been considering going more public with my readings. So I'm trying to learn the traditional interpretations of the cards by carrying a card in my pocket each day. I'd love it if you'd do a series of videos explaining the traditional meanings of each card.
I think it’s a little bit overkill to say that it’s offensive that they were all Europeans. Tarot cards are European, developed by Europeans. They derived from a game in Italy, spread through Europe and then developed under French occultists… The concepts are based in European society (Monarchical court cards), and concepts from European paganism (four elements) and general mythology (major arcana) . It’s an INDIGENOUS sacred spiritual practice , we tend to forget that. It gets remade all the time, which in the one hand is fine because times change, but in the other hand it literally is cultural appropriation and colonization. So, let’s have a multicultural tarot deck re illustration - but let’s not cry offense and injustice against the originators of the card system itself for being who they are and reflecting their own cultures.
Yes. We forget that since we’ve colonized this continent (North America), over here Indigenous means Native American. But in Europe, Caucasians are indigenous. So it is an indigenous practice in Europe, but it has evolved to be created to represent the different people other than Europeans. I don’t know that anyones calling that appropriation. One thing I’m growing weary of is the shaming of appropriating ( fill-in-the-blank ), when the folks doing the shaming aren’t themselves members of the culture/community being appropriated. It’s a phenomenon of the times, the self-appointed gatekeepers of a community they aren’t a member of.
@@georginatoland I think I spoke a little harshly. I got the gist more than my comment may indicate - we have to acknowledge the narrowness of the depictions on the cards - but those decpictions are secondary to their symbolic meaning anyway, which may pertain to universal concepts, or people of any sex, race, culture.
Amaaaaaaazing! Thank you. Court cards have always been the most challenging for my students. I have a heterosexual pair of friends but he would definitely be more Queen energy and his wife definitely more King. I've seen a 15 year old young lady take on the role of Queen to her mother who was acting like a teenager (Knight). This opens so much up! I'm sharing this video with my new students :) Thank you. Love your channel
Chris Lassiter Thank you so much! This video was the culmination of 40 years of puzzling over the various ways that I'd read about and how it differed from the way I actually read the cards for people.
Georgina Toland i hope to be as knowledgeable as you about the cards one day. I was naturally drawn to them through my strong affiliation with playing cards/mtg and tarot seems to consolidate my spiritual/philosophic beliefs all in one book. Quite mystic. Also, I read another person's request to do a video on the Hermetic deck. I also purchased this deck and would be interested to see your readings. Thanks again
You should write a book! I’m about to return the one I got and just learn from you, as well as pick up either the radiant or universal (I’ll end up with both no doubt🤦🏽♀️🤣). I just bought my first deck(s) this week but am not in love; one is the original and too busy for me/don’t love colors, other is a pretty holographic one but turns out it’s a small cheap one from China -I still secretly love it🤭. However to learn I’m finding I don’t like borders and other random details. Anyhoo, thank you so much for these amazing videos. I’m binge watching but will have to rewatch so I can do the homeworks. 💕
Thank you so much for the kind words! I actually started this YT channel to **avoid** writing a book...only to spend even more time writing scripts and recording videos! 🤦🏽♀️ Both the Radiant Rider Waite and the Universal Waite are great decks for learning Tarot. But the most important thing is to choose a deck that you really like. These days, I’ve been experimenting with **gasp** deck modification! Trimming borders and coloring the edge of decks. Thank you again for watching! 🙂
Georgina Toland your passion and knowledge shows .. it’s so easy to remember with your methods! And yes I’m trying to figure out if I should/how to color the backs myself .. beautiful oracle cards have spoiled me! Do you do any oracle ? Didn’t see any briefly scrolling through your videos ..
Dawn Michelle (You Tube channel “Boho Tarot”) is my source for deck modification. She uses decorative contact paper to cover the backs of decks she doesn’t like. As for Oracle cards, I’m particularly fond of this hybrid deck: Energy Oracle Cards - Unboxing & Review ua-cam.com/video/LKG1YaJ_Kk8/v-deo.html And sometimes I will mix an Oracle deck with Tarot and/or Lenormand: Mixing Different Oracles - Medieval Meditation Spread ua-cam.com/video/Yt_NiwfTeJg/v-deo.html

ツAriel L hi. It’s going okay. I have to get better at interpreting the cards, for more than their textbook meanings. Hopefully I’ll get there. How’s your tarot journey?
@ツAriel L OMG, you are NOT alone, not at all. It is funny, but not funny. I'm right there with you, as I'm sure many others are. Sometimes, I just think I'll never REALLY get it, and people are saying slow down and trust the process (which I'm trying to do). I've also experienced, "learning" one way from someone, and then hearing something totally different from another. I guess we just have to choose which is the path that we identify with the most. It is very frustrating when things don't seem to make sense, but it is also fun when we make a rightful connection. Hopefully we will both make progress in this journey and not just give up. It seems I'm pulling the "right" cards, but not making the right connections. I have a friend who is further along in her tarot journey, and when she shares her interpretations of what the cards I pull mean, it is like the message just "clicks".
@ツAriel L Yeah, definitely not alone. Glad you're not going to give up, and have devised a plan to get you to where you'd like to be. I'm still working on finding my way, so I thank you for your kind words. This morning I felt a bit of a breakthrough again so that was pretty cool (was having a bit of a mental block). Even though I just started, I take a little break when I'm feeling completely disconnected (sometimes a day, sometimes a few days). I just ordered a book online, so hopefully that'll help me. I'll still watch videos, because I like seeing the tarot interpreted "live", but I won't try to watch nor memorize every different person/method. I have a couple that I believe can guide me in the right direction. I'm also trying to figure out my own interpretations, which has been my trouble spot. It is always good to know that you're not alone on this journey, especially when the frustration hits, so I appreciate these little "chats" as much as you do, lol. Wishing you so much luck, and hopefully we'll both continue to find our way. :D :D :D

Thank you most kindly for offering your expertise to all so graciously. Thank you for unblocking the last Tarot hurdle, the court cards. I greatly enjoyed your enthusiasm, highly engaging tone, and measured speech. Subscribed and will check all your other stuff. Miss, if you're not a teacher please consider it. This was a veritable treat that I will watch again. Extremely well done.
antys channel Aw...thank you so very much! 🤗 I struggled with Court Cards for years when I first studied Tarot, and the books available on the topic back in the day (cough the 1970s cough) were very limiting. Nobody should have to go through that. 🙂
as an intermediate tarot learner, I’m trying to get information from as many sources as possible, and this was such a new perspective and helpful explanation. thank you ! also, thanks for shutting down the cisheteronormative nonsense ✌️
I've just started -- finally!!! -- to revisit your Lenormand videos to learn! And regarding the Tarot, you're totally right regarding gender and ethnicity. That's why I always tried to capture the personality of each card. But you do it better! But I have 2 questions: in your opinion, who could represent a teacher best? A king of swords or a knight of swords? And what about a widower? Also the queen of swords? Ok, ok... a 3rd question 😉: who could represent a divorcee and also someone who chooses to remain single? THANKS!!!
I don’t have Court Card assignments for marital status in my system. If the personality of the person is unknown, I fall back on the old “Kings for mature men and Queens for mature women” or offer the querent their choice of the cards. As to who best represents teachers...that would depend on the subject they teach. Law or sciences? King of Swords. Hospitality? Queen of Wands. Bushcraft? King of Wands. Fine arts? Perhaps the Queen of Cups. Bartender school? King of Cups. Business? King of Pentacles. Real estate? Queen of Pentacles. Another consideration: Teaching implies mastery, so only Kings & Queens would be used. (Sorry, Knights!) Someone who homeschools their kids would likely be represented by a Queen, since Queens often represent mastery behind the scenes and/or leadership in small, intimate groups. One more thought: If I saw the Hierophant appear in a spread, and I was reading for a teacher, I would likely interpret the card as the educational system itself. And the appearance of The Hermit may represent someone that offers private tutoring.
Georgina Toland Aha! Because I teach English-as-a-foreign-language and I know others who teach completely different things and I wasn't sure. Again, mil (1,000) gracias!!!!!
Georgina Toland Si! But I hardly remember my German.... so long ago. En realidad, mis dos lenguas nativas son el inglés y el español (castellano, es decir, de España). But you do have a flair for languages! 😉 If you ever see any typos here, just remember my cell's Spanish and I have to keep "teaching" the Spanish spellcheck proper English 😄
It's the best video in the matter, and I'm telling this after having seen a lot, both in English and Spanish. Also have to say you're very didactic and your English is very clear
Adriana Colino - Thank you for the kind words! I actually took professional training for my speaking voice. (My natural voice is much higher and has a nasal tone--so says my voice coach. 😜 Oh the things you learn about yourself when a professional is involved! 😊)
I assign the 12 zodiac signs to each card. To me, they represent attitudes. The pages show aspects of the major arcana card - the Fool. I like your approach because it's similar to mine.
Thank you for your video. It is always nice to know that someone with 40+ years of experience is willing to give to others. That's why we do it, right? Stay in the light. :) Kind regards, Clark
My mother brought me this same deck from spain. I asked for the original RWS but this one is all she could get. I wasn't happy but when i saw the cards in real life (not pictures of them) i loved them, and watching your video made me love them even more. Do you have more videos of your teachings? Today I went with my best friend to the woods and made my first "reading" ever, not knowing much, (Ive only seen this video once and thats all my tarot info). I followed the instructions of the little book. And I think we got a clear message from the cards or whatever is speaking through them. Like a guessing game (in spanish we say "adivinanza") with the small paragraph that the little book dedicates for every card. I think that maybe i got 1% of a reading, like... some clue.... anyway, Im hungry for more... I want to learn... do you recomend any book in particular? I would defnetly buy your audio-book!! thank you, thank you again!!!
+Guido Bossi Reading Tarot in the woods! So awesome! Books are a great resource, but the best way to learn is to keep practicing. It's okay if you don't get more than 1% because you are just beginning to learn -- you must "walk before you can run". 🙂 I post videos every other week and look forward to hearing about your progress!

Thank you so much I have never looked at the court cards in this way but it makes total sense and is much easier to understand and read than the old way. Brilliant!
This is freaking amazing!! I'm just learning tarot and this makes everything seem not so scary and overwhelming. Question. When you're choosing an avatar, is that for a reading where the person isn't present (i.e. online)?
Choosing a card to represent the querent is usually done regardless of whether the querent is in front of the reader or not. It is up to the reader and the kind of spread they are using. Some readers don’t use significator cards at all! And others, like me, use them almost always.
Love your courses! You are such a brilliant teacher :-) Will you be continuing with the classes for the Rider Waite Deck? There seems to be some courses missing?
Georgina- that is fantastic to hear! I will be eagerly waiting .Thanks for all the effort you have put into your videos. The dedication you have toward teaching us really shows. :-)
Absolutely. Georgina is the best on UA-cam for teaching how to use tarot and Lenormand cards. Her explanations are well organised, concise, and contain the kind of surprise connections that make an idea take hold and stick.
Lovely clear precise video and so quirky with presentations like the Sword suit Love it.! Georgina , I do relationship spreads, and clients more often are not interested in validations on themselves, but want to know about the significant other in detail. Do you have a vid. which focusses and gives this kinda info?
One of the common ethical issues Tarot readers struggle with is the request for info on people who are not present for the reading. We call this “reading for a third party” and as a reader yourself it will be up to you to determine what is appropriate and what crosses over into spying. I have no videos on how to handle this ethical issue or how to effectively spy on third parties. My querents usually know better than to ask me such things. This will sound harsh, but if you have querents who repeatedly push this ethical boundary, redirect them to focus on themselves and what they can do to strengthen their relationships. And if they resist...refuse to read for them altogether.
Really clarifying to see the court cards and its suits in this manner. Def going to add that to my readings. I'm curious to know if you've read Rachel Pollack's 78 Degrees of Wisdom. It's been my preferred book so far. Been meaning to ask you since your video on tarot books (added most of those to my list btw hahah).

You explain this so so so well. Can't wait to see more videos!
I love her clear voice and well-structured video. It's very helpful for beginners also. thanks!
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of the tarot.
this is the most professional, well made, and educational tarot video ive ever seen. thank you sooo much for what you do, i drew heirophant today for CotD and now i know it was you i drew.
Im so glad i found this even thiit was 8 years later. :) im in a class right now and am not learning much about the court cards. This video is everything!! I finally get it. Thank you!! Absolutely incredible!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Best wishes on your Tarot journey. 🥰
I just want to say I love how you're teaching! I'm familiar with astrology and numberology so some things overlap which is good for me!
I think you both misunderstand my video and my viewpoint. But I welcome the conversation.
Great explanation of the history and evolution over time of the court cards
Amaaaaaaazing! Thank you. Court cards have always been the most challenging for my students. I have a heterosexual pair of friends but he would definitely be more Queen energy and his wife definitely more King. I've seen a 15 year old young lady take on the role of Queen to her mother who was acting like a teenager (Knight). This opens so much up! I'm sharing this video with my new students :) Thank you. Love your channel
Fantastic videos. Youve taught me more than a couple weeks of obsessive studying of books of all points of view. Thank you!
Well articulated, Georgina Toland. Thank you for concisely unpacking the court cards. Great job. And hey, geeks are so in. ;) ;) ;)
VanvouverWeightLoss Thanks! And yes, it appears that geekery is in. 🙂
Both the Radiant Rider Waite and the Universal Waite are great decks for learning Tarot.
As for Oracle cards, I’m particularly fond of this hybrid deck:

And sometimes I will mix an Oracle deck with Tarot and/or Lenormand:

Georgina, you are such a good teacher. With a fantastic voice and narrative ! I am learning yaya!!!!
This was such a great and easily understandable breakdown of the court cards! Loved your analogies, thanks so much! 😃
I’m glad that you enjoyed it! ❤️
Also this the best explanation of court cards I've ever heard. Thanks for sharing :)
I have been binging on your tarot videos and am so sad to see (in a previous response) that you’ll be closing this channel in just a couple of days. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I wish I had found you sooner. (Just starting my tarot journey). I just requested to join your FB group. Wishing you the very best and hope you reconsider leaving the UA-cam community (a girl can dream, lol) 💖💖💖
Wow!!! Thanks for this video,, very helpful for a beginner like me 🙏🙏🙏 And ur voice sounds so sweet and it well explained very clearly 😍😍😍
You are a very good teacher. Thanks
Dang you are the best tarot teacher ever! Thank you! I’m subbing.
Aw...! You are so sweet! (Thank you for the sub!)
Thank you for making this. I have been struggling with the court cards. I usually cringe when I draw them. This was very helpful!
so great, that you interpret the card in a contemporary, inclusive way! LGBT community member being tremendously grateful!
Thank you for this outstanding video and for sharing your knowledge with us. I learned so much and really appreciate it!
Commenting prior to the conclusion of this video.
When does your book come out, 'cause I'll be first in line. Natural-born teacher are you.
I'm learning tarot, and this video really helped me understand court cards better :) Thanks!!
as an intermediate tarot learner, I’m trying to get information from as many sources as possible, and this was such a new perspective and helpful explanation. thank you !
also, thanks for shutting down the cisheteronormative nonsense ✌️
thank you for being aware of the language restrictions and changing them!! it's do important, I apreciate it a lot
(Sorry, Knights!)
Someone who homeschools their kids would likely be represented by a Queen, since Queens often represent mastery behind the scenes and/or leadership in small, intimate groups.
One more thought: If I saw the Hierophant appear in a spread, and I was reading for a teacher, I would likely interpret the card as the educational system itself. And the appearance of The Hermit may represent someone that offers private tutoring.
The only widow card in traditional Tarot cartomancy is the Queen of Swords...but I’ve never used her as a such. 🙅🏽♀️
Georgina Toland Aha! Because I teach English-as-a-foreign-language and I know others who teach completely different things and I wasn't sure. Again, mil (1,000) gracias!!!!!
Oh, Georgina. This is so helpful. 💜
Excellent information! Thank you! Gave me a whole new perspective! 💜✨🔮🙏
Exxxxxxxxcellent. This was my 4th "court card" UA-cam search, the best.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, best teacher ever !!! : )
Wow, this is amazing
You are a FANTASTIC teacher!!!!
very helpful and clear, thank you!
+PirateGirl64 Thank you! 🙂
Love this modern interpretation!!
Thank you for your video. It is always nice to know that someone with 40+ years of experience is willing to give to others. That's why we do it, right? Stay in the light. :) Kind regards, Clark
Just found you! Thankful.
Thanks, I have always had problems with this theme!
you truly have a gift for teaching. muchísimas gracias
+Guido Bossi Thank you for the kind words!
I would defnetly buy your audio-book!! thank you, thank you again!!!
perdone mi inglés!
+Guido Bossi Reading Tarot in the woods! So awesome! Books are a great resource, but the best way to learn is to keep practicing. It's okay if you don't get more than 1% because you are just beginning to learn -- you must "walk before you can run". 🙂
I post videos every other week and look forward to hearing about your progress!
loved your teaching. Very clear. Easy to understand. Would you please add captions on the screen while you are talking to make its easy to write notes. Your free classes are awesome ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐 Thanks a lot !
There are closed captions in English. Click the CC button at the lower center of the screen.
Thank you so much I have never looked at the court cards in this way but it makes total sense and is much easier to understand and read than the old way. Brilliant!
Thank you, very good presentation!
I would love to see you do more Tarot tutorials...any chance you're gonna do more?
ChrisAnn Simone That is definitely the plan. I had meant to add more last Fall, but some house repairs literally got in the way.
Thank you
Absolutely loved this take on the court cards.
+firesong83 Aw...! Thanks! 🙂
Love your courses! You are such a brilliant teacher :-) Will you be continuing with the classes for the Rider Waite Deck? There seems to be some courses missing?
Yes, I will be continuing the series. 🙂
Georgina- that is fantastic to hear! I will be eagerly waiting .Thanks for all the effort you have put into your videos. The dedication you have toward teaching us really shows. :-)
So well explained 👏👏👏👏👏🙏
This presentation is lovely.
You are a fantastic teacher.
Aw...thank you very much for the kind words! 🥰
Thank you so much Georgina it makes sound sense, for an issue women especially get quite uptight about. Love n light@@georginatoland
I have read 78 Degrees of Wisdom. It is a very popular book for those who use the Kabbalah correspondences. (I do not, so...🤷🏽♀️)
Brilliant! Thank you!
subscribed immediately after your woke intro! queen
This was a wonderful video. Thanks so much
Beautifully executed 🙏🏻😁❤
