    You cannot compare different eras. Ken was the most dominant player. He was a trailblazer and he created every skill that he had. The players today have many videos of players to watch and learn from. They also have totally different discs. The discs back then did not have speed ratings. I remember when the Viper came out. We could not believe how stable it was! It only has a speed rating of 6 now. I played doubles against Ken in 1991 in Augusta. I was not in his league it was just random draw. Ken was a nice guy and an incredible player.

      Couldn't agree more. People are getting introduced at a younger age, have more free training available, and better technology. I have only played for 3 years now, but I understand that newer players like myself stand on the shoulders of giants like Climo, Shultz, Stokely and company.

    Y'all also can check ratings from back then. Ratings became official in 1998, and he was the first 1040 rated disc golfer in like, 1999. If he was in his prime throwing those same discs from 25 years ago, he would be rated the same at Matty O and only 5 players would be rated higher than him. (Dickerson, Heimberg, Eagle, Ricky, Paul). He is absolutely the GOAT. Paul is obviously better than Ken was, but no denying that Ken was WAY ahead of his time. Thank you for setting the standard then all but a few will ever reach in ratings alone, and for setting a standard that no one will ever match in titles.

    • @mech0p
      @mech0p 2 роки тому +8

      The courses were also way different and much easier back then as well. Go play a course from the 90s and alot of the holes are around 300 ft. Also the rating system has changed several times since then. Im sure he would of still been a 1000 rated player and could compete in his prime but he definitelt wouldnt have no where near as many championships. We gotta give him respect though because he helped grow this game big time.

      Idk. I think UA-cam and other social media outlets helped players advance DRASTICALLY compared to having to learn from trial and error back in Climo’s era of Disc Golf. I think if Climo was to compete again today he’d be a Top 100 player. Hell, maybe even a top 50. The guy was just a natural. I believe (could be wrong) but he started disc golf in his late teens/early 20’s. He wasn’t born into the sport like most top players today.

    • @Arrjaayyy
      @Arrjaayyy 2 роки тому

      Your opinion is based off an extremely underwhelmed field of actual athletes playing the game at that time. Ratings are subjective to the strength of the competing field and until the past 10 years or so the field was a joke. The field is just starting to get competitive now that the money is large enough to entice talented athletes from other sports. Ken wouldn't have survived today's field and Paul would also have less on his resume imo.

    "What he was able to accomplish along the way will most likely never be achievable again in today's game." The fact that this comment can be made during this video is why there is a debate about GOAT status. No disrespect to the competitors of the time, but they weren't the caliber of Paul, Ricky, Calvin, Eagle, Chris, etc. Do I think Ken would have still been a force to reckon with, for sure, just probably would have had a whole lot less 1s on his PDGA page.

    Most underrated putter inside 35, I knew I was in trouble in his group when, I started off round 3 under after 9, which was my best start on that course.
    But this 8ft wingspan,
    Waa 9 for 9.
    And his furthest putt on front 9. Was about 10ft.. after the round,
    I felt really good about my progress.
    And was surprised the champ knew all my stats and wins, which I told me my ratings, my last time out finish, my city, my home course,
    Then named 5 guys in my town he knew.
    I was shocked, this guy, knew all his comp.
    Their strength, and weaknesses. I'll always cherish the champ, knowing he told me several times, great putt, are good throw. Being a athlete, it wa as like Jordan are bird saying that to me.
    And while hes talking to me after the round, a grown man walks up and ask him to sign a disc, I was like damn, and then the guy handed it to me, and ask me too.
    It was that moment.
    I had to push my seat all way back, to fit my head in. I had arrived.
    Not really, but in my mind. All the daily 4hr practices showed their fruits. Lots of hard work...
    Then month later, I'm at another gig. And champ comes over and ask if he can practice with me.
    And my folk.
    So it went from getting dialed in, to, a whole other level of preparation.

    I'm gonna comment the same thing I commented on the original version of this video; Ken Climo IS the GOAT. for most of the 90s, the fastest discs were speed 6 and the fairways were more tightly wooded than they are now. everything was par 3 no matter how long (and there WERE very long holes) or if there was a dog leg right or anything, and Climo still went 18 under regularly (there was no Udisc and there were signicantly more non-pdga sanctioned tournaments). There is also a very good reason Climo's name is on every stock Star Wraith, he was always an elite level distance thrower. Put Climo in his prime into ANY era with ANY discs and he is still the best. McBeth is a fantastic player, but he's not Climo.
    EDIT: he also had a full-time dayjob the whole time.

    The way I see it Climo is like Bill Russell. Incredible player, incredible winner, and the most dominant player relative to era. On paper you'd think the 11 time champ and defensive rebounding stud would be the goat, but that isn't the consensus. Personally I have him at #4. As a sport evolves so do the players. Michael Jordan is the consensus #1 all time basketball player. Not because he dominated his era the same way Bill did but that when he did it was against much tougher competition. Now in the 2020s basketball is such a global sport with many of the best players coming from outside the US. If someone were to dominate this era the way MJ did his they would take the goat title. I think Paul is the MJ of disc golf, and many years down the road maybe someone will dominate a much more evolved era and overtake him too.

    The Bill Russell of disc golf. Bill was the biggest winner but it didn’t make him the greatest ever. Circumstance had a lot to do with it. You can only beat the competition that’s in front of you. It’s not his fault the sport didn’t have the same type of athletes involved, but it’s more impressive what Mcbeth is doing now. Jean shorts are not athletic attire

    Who cares what a survey of today says about who is the Greatest of all time? Most people have a memory of about 2 seconds these days. I have been playing since 1981. I watched Kenny live and in Person. I have watched all the great players of today including Paul. You want to say strength of competition, and all that other B.S. that Paul is the GOAT. I'll tell you what, let me know if you can take Paul back to when Kenny was playing and see how he plays those courses with those discs - while working a full time job or Make Kenny 22 years younger playing todays courses with todays discs and no job. If you can't, then you don't know what you talking about. Paul, and Kenny are 2 of the best players of Disc Golf. However, World titles are how most logical people would determine who is the best. Kenny is the GOAT until Paul can pass him up.

    He is in fact .. the goat. There is no debate, it's Ken f climo. Just like any player today , you play the competition that shows up and you dominate them. Over and over 12x

    Yes Climo was the best in his era by a long shot but he wouldn’t even be a top 25 player in todays field, to even try to make the argument that Climo is better than Paul is a total joke, look at highlights in the 90s and then look at the ones we have today, not even close

    • @Mr10usdad

      You cannot compare. McBeth has the benefit of growing up with faster discs, better technique that he learned from watching other players. The game has morphed so much since I started playing in 1990. Back then the fastest disc was an Inova Viper.

      I wouldn’t say he wouldn’t be top 25 in todays game. Dude could throw a frisbee even just a few short years ago. No shot hes winning 12 world titles today. But he would definitely be competitive.

      @@asmith9554 The ammount of championships dont make you the goat especially when in the 90s almost no one had heard of disc golf at the time. When the field is smaller there is valot less competition and in kens time there were only a handful of people that could beat him because back then disc golf was just for fun and not meant to be taken serious. Now days with the money involved in it the competition is going through the roof and instead of there being a handful of people that could win at anytime there is a big list now that could take any tourney. Im sure if we reversed roles and through mcbeth in the 90s or even the top 10 now in the 90s they would have had similar results. Not saying climo wasnt the shit but the goat is doubtful especially since the sport is only like 50 yrs old and has just recently started blowing up.
