One thing my friends, I new to your channel most of the videos are based on raspberry Pi , you push the raspberry Pi to max level I think so , it make me more interesting how you know to do this things in raspberry Pi itself , you are Smart And Clever
Great video, inspired me to have a go myself - clear and loved the enthusiasm. Downsides are that the vSphere UI stuff looks like it's only usable for 60 days unless you wanna get out your chequebook, and looks like VMW are saying you have to reinstall the RPi package every 3 months. 😭
LOL even if they had an ARM edition, good luck running it on a Pi with even 8gig of ram. It's a pig of an appliance, pretty sure it requires a min of 8 gig of RAM all on its own. I have a copy of it running on my home lab in the smallest VM i could get it to run in which I think is 8gig of RAM. It works and is fairly responsive once booted for playing in a home lab on 8gig of ram, but the appliance takes something like 20-30min to boot to the point you can login to the web ui. And this is v6.7.0, not sure how much more pigish 7.0 is.
@@d0ugk oh, 7.0 is pretty much the same in that regard. It takes FOREVER to boot, which is driving me crazy, and it's eating RAM and CPU for breakfast. Good thing I have two decommissioned Servers with 256 Gigs of RAM and two octacores each as my lab environment at work
I find with 6.7.0 the CPU isn't bad once it's booted and settled down. It's Still a ram pig. My cluster at home is 4 lenovo m93p tiny hosts I picked up for a bit over 100 a pop. Max ram on them is 16gig, so the vcenter appliance eats up half those resources on one of the 4. They fit comfortably next to my qnap nas in one of those Ikea cubby hole shelves, and don't scream or chew power like a rack of servers.
You are awesome, man! I just followed your tutorial and VMware installed successfully on RPi. It's amazing. I am discovering new things every time with your shares. Thanks again for this video and I'm looking forward to see what this little computer is capable of. Keep up this good work!
@@Peralot No, ESXi on ARM is currently only in technical preview. It won't take a standard ESXi license. There is currently no way to get past the 180 day limit
When using vcenter you need at least a standard license for vcenter and esxi. the more crazy cluster stuff needs enterprise licenses. these licenses are not cheap, the bigger ones cost like 300.000 $ i think
My Pi4B won't accept that I disable the "Limit RAM to 3 GB". I do hit "Y", it changes state to "", go back to the main menu with ESC, hit "Continue" and restart into the boot menu again. IT STILL SHOWS 3GB AND THE OPTION IS AGAIN!!!
That's probably why they are porting it but the problem is, what are you going to be running as a virtual machine on a ARM based MAC? Linux? Why bother? There are versions of windows that run on ARM, but they aren't full versions and most of the software that is available for Windows isn't available for x86 unless it's from Microsoft - and you can bet that programs are that are available for ARM Windows will be available for ARM Mac. It's kind of neat, but not very useful in my opinion. I really wish there was a full blown raspberry pi simulator for x86. Qemu doesn't really cut it for me. Less work for me just to develop directly on a pi.
@@richardwicks4190 I agree with you totally, I am not speaking from any stand point, just motivating factors to purchase a mac book, I am not married to a platform just functionality and stability, I use old laptops with Linux distros and or Windows and will probably continue like that because I have no need to buy a platform for the sake of the platform. With virtualization one doesn't need to spend a lot on a machine unless of course you just really want to.
"Its free!"... atleast for 180 days? - whats the price after the Evaluation period runs out? - The twins.... how about some clustering? - SQL-server dividing load between the two.... or loadbalancing of some sort? Im not really sure how it actually works but maybe its an idea for a future video (even tho this is from Oct '20) - Great video! Thanks alot :)
Still free but some features are disable like backup API, and Autodeploy API..things mostly not needed or missed by small/homelab users.. You could join VMware User Group, it’s $200 a year and you get all the VMware licenses you want
I'm guessing because the higher end USB 3 thumb drives have more write cycles than SD cards. Being used for ESXi will wear any flash related media out considerably faster greatly reducing their lifespans. The higher end USB3 flash drives tend to have higher write cycles and will generally last longer.
Hey @NetworkChuck... nice little video... so crazy you can run EXSi on a couple of pi's... quick question. what you running vCenter on? I know it ain't no PI!
There was a new fling version for download on ESXi; but somehow was not able to get it with etcher on the USB stick. Eventually I installed those files from the ISO/DMG file direct into the stick and booted up the Pi. The rest was as in the video. And I have an ESXi running on Pi with a 256GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD via USB3. Really nice to see it running. Still need to find a way around the 180day evaluation time to really start using it in my home lab and not loosing it later. Thanks for the walk-through; the main thing I did different was replace the coffee with tea
Hi, I followed the tutorial and it worked great. I now have a working Esxi Pi. Thank you for putting this together, I have added a POE power supply so now I have a self contained esxi server. Awesome! Thanks again. SGNI :)
Great Stuff! I really appreciate the quality of those videos. I used VM many times but never had to play with the infrastructure behind them. I am about to buy 2 more Rpis and i'm gonna try that some day.

I was playing around a few years ago and had ESXi running in a VM and connecting to it in multiple VM's on one machine. That was fun :)
I've been waiting for esxi on a pi. Theres a win 10 on arm out there somewhere. Windows on a pi 😱😱😱
Great run through Chuck
Novaspirit Tech tried and didn't seem to be able to get WOA working in exsi.
Surprising recommended video. We've had a small RPi cluster in our test vCenter at work for a few years. Fun little project.
Runweasel is the name of the ESXI installer. :) Loving your videos, just signed up for This Is IT too.
Installer or rather the boot loader?
This is so exciting! I'm trying to build an offline recovery center with an AI that can reference whatever file you need and dump it to a thumbdrive. So far from your channel I've gained a ton of inspiration and with this VMware solution, I think my vision is just a little bit closer to being realized.
Thank you for being you!
Does it do vCenter and can you show us vMotion on next video? Btw, Great video! Keep up the good job!
I got this running on my rpi4 now with a Network storage with syncthing for photos using a 2 tb USB drive and a pihole server. LOVE IT
I can feel my blood pressure rising from all the coffee breaks.
Good message telling people if they learn virtualization they could be valuable in the workplace.
This man has his own coffee. Link in the description 😆
The one like Kopi luwak, but made in his own way?
Like your style and how you make this not boring at all. Will be learning a lot from you. Thanks mate
man: installs ESXi on pi
me: installs ESXi on virtualbox inside virtualbox on windows inside mac inside TV

Why so many devices if you can virtualize the Matrix in your ThreadRipper am I right?
It's a big fun to show your video, thank you!
Dude did you install vcentre on one of the raspberry pi as a vm or on another device?
Will a follow up video explain installing vcenter on the pi?
I feel like your physical example of breaking up a Rasberry Pi may end up tricking some people into actually breaking their Rasberry Pi. Never underestimate users.
i was gonna enter the giveaway but i’m too broke
Just build my vmware ESXi on my brand new Raspberry Pi 4. Nice video and steps. Thanks for sharing.
It feels sad 😢 when someone wastes a technology that I can't afford 😔
Why can you not afford it?

Late ... but loving this session. I agree ... those cutz were painful. Was on a joy ride w/3rd different OS install on 3rd SD card collection ... then this. Crashed into a fence, lost all cards, now headed down this path! I'm still in a daze that this path actually exists. Is this wonderland ... ?
Chuck!! I did all steps right but my rpi boot up with a green undercore in the middle of the screen, right after the rainbow pic. Any advice??
Got the same screen...checking my steps and will try again after it's downloaded again.
Had the same issue on my RPI 4b 8GB. Changed from 16 to gpu_mem=32 in the config.txt. That did it for me.
@@mgran3724 bro thank you!! this worked for me! 100% approved
@@mgran3724 YES, YES!!! Thank you!
I hjave tried everything but I'm stick with the green cursor thing - gonna fling it lol. Any ideas Please ?
One thing my friends, I new to your channel most of the videos are based on raspberry Pi , you push the raspberry Pi to max level I think so , it make me more interesting how you know to do this things in raspberry Pi itself , you are Smart And Clever
0:21 I NEVER FELT SUCH PAIN WATCHING A VIDEO
yes it was
Great video, inspired me to have a go myself - clear and loved the enthusiasm. Downsides are that the vSphere UI stuff looks like it's only usable for 60 days unless you wanna get out your chequebook, and looks like VMW are saying you have to reinstall the RPi package every 3 months. 😭
Have fun installing VMware vCenter >:^)
vCenter is not compatible with arm "yet" lol on their page they say it can be managed with vCenter running on a x86 system though
Saw this a bit late.... but I got to say this ... Chuck, you're the man.
You are awesome, man! I just followed your tutorial and VMware installed successfully on RPi. It's amazing.
I am discovering new things every time with your shares. Thanks again for this video and I'm looking forward to see what this little computer is capable of. Keep up this good work!
You cut that up!!????😱. I need one, and you cut it up! 😭
Haha, it was already broken. I’m not that crazy.
😂😂
@@NetworkChuck thank you for not killing a brand new pi
You're boosting my dopamine every video I watch 😅
Do you have a Tutorial about configuring your Synology..... iSCSI vs LUN's vs NFS
I second this, it’ll be way more useful to me than buying a massive USB flash drive
Use NFS, it is way faster than iSCSI.
Yes! Got it running finally! Now to build the Cluster! Hey Chuck! Any chance you can do a tutorial for setting up the cluster in VMware?
"You are currently using ESXi in evaluation mode. This license will expire in 180 days." fantastic guide! but isn't it forever? :(
You just have to create an account on VMware.com and register the free ESXi for a free license.
@@Gaget01Stuff I was wondering about the vCetner Eval period. Good to know. Thanks! :)
stop using VMware and use ssh or putty instead

Sweet, nice coverage of all the needed components. But, now I have to ask Santa for an 8gig version of the Pi. Keep Rock'n IT !!!
I'm getting this as well. Any luck?
@@chiodos48 Nope. I've given up on it, after trying on 2 other identical (and completely new) pi4b 8gb... 🤷♂️
Ditto. Brand new Pi 4 8GB and the 3GB limit won't stick after the reboot.
@@powerupminion try an earlier UEFI version. I got it working
@@NinjaFlashX I can't remember the version but I found an earlier UEFI version. That worked for me.
It hurts so much to see u slice the pie..thats a powerful tool..respect it
I wonder will this be available for the Macs since they are moving to ARM chips
Just set my up my ESXI. Great tutorial!
Can't even enter because I have pihole on my old raspberry, would love having the latest 8gb model
Is there a technical limitation that prevents you from installing ESXi on the SD card? Or do you leave that on Raspian for recovery purposes?
Would like to know too
I'm guessing because the higher end USB 3 thumb drives have more write cycles than SD cards. Being used for ESXi will wear any flash related media out considerably faster greatly reducing their lifespans. The higher end USB3 flash drives tend to have higher write cycles and will generally last longer.
Wow, I never thought a Pi would be able to run ESXi!! I'm going to have to upgrade though, because mine is only 2Gigs
HI where can I find the appropiate kali image for this project? I cant find it
I to would like to know which image to use
Wow. Thank you. I didn’t know we could do this. You deserve a subscription.
Instructions unclear! I cut my Pi in 4 and it does not boot for some reason. Could you please clarify

Hey @NetworkChuck... nice little video... so crazy you can run EXSi on a couple of pi's... quick question. what you running vCenter on? I know it ain't no PI!

I did this on four Raspberry Pi 4 8GB's. Incredible learning tool!
When is the new CCNA video coming up? :S

@@NetworkChuck Cool! Thanks for your work. Love it
Just did this, so cool, can't wait to play more with it!
Awesome!
