  • This painting was born out of a brief experience and painted largely from the memory of that experience. I am beginning to feel that the artists memory can develop like any other skill.
In this short video I am showing the basic steps - from conception to signature - that I followed to create the painting. The full length version is available of my Gumroad page
this video is bundled with an exercise in creating luminous washes as well as PDF Files that break down the demo step by step.

A special thank you to Amelia Ebaugh who wrote and played the beautiful piece that accompanies this video "Light left"

Let me add one more thing. The painting and speech aside, the video does leave me a bit of sad feeling. It’s melancholy and nostalgia altogether. Feelings of something lost, so transient and unretrievable, be it a bird or a piece of grass, or a tiny snow flake. It’s a poem, a poem of lamentation. It’s beautiful.

You make it look easy! I simply love the loose way you paint! And so precise at the same time! You make every brush stroke count! Thanks master!

I particularly liked this one as I’m interested in painting snow scenes. You really do put yourself into your paintings so well with your expressive brush work! The name ‘Muddy River’ really doesn’t do it justice, it’s such a beautiful place. Thank you.

Pauline - I to always wondered about the “Muddy “ in the muddy river - I wonder if there is a background story :)

I’ve been following you all along and again you impressed me with your philosophical aesthetics speech while you painted along. This time you didn’t mention the usual Chinese brushwork theory but every stroke you took, especially at the birch tree, expressively manifested that infatuation. I would think you attempted the calligraphic way of painting the bamboo shoots onto the tree. I love your theory of incorporating the Chinese or Japanese brushwork into watercolor painting, a Western invention in essence. The painting is vivid, lucid and vibrant, coming alive with its colors and brushwork movements. Again, thank you from a guy who does Chinese calligraphy and oil paintings, and an art history graduate from a prestigious college in Mass.

That was SO relaxing to watch, thank you Gary. Perhaps the combination of the well expressed thoughts behind the painting, the beautiful music and the glow of that morning light helped me forget the third lockdown here in Italy.
I also aspire to being able to free myself from looking at the photos I take and getting confused by the information in them. Simplification seems so hard to attain.

Love what you do Gary, but really not sure about this new format. I know that I'm in a minority, but I'm finding the music intrusive. i feel the video's have lost their authenticity somehow - in the artistic sense. Still a big fan of your paintings though :)
