Reading the book for the third time now, I believe that playing Dante would be SUCH a challenge because not only is he such a character, but this character also has LOTS to teach. I would probably go insane playing him, because I wouldn't be able to get my sh*t together after going through everything he does (even as playing him, hahah).
I saw this movie on opening night in El Paso (Sept 8). I really feel that the producers missed a major opportunity to film here. The sense of place that the book brings to the story was mostly unexplored. Coming of age here has its unique aspects. However, there were a few nods to this truth. Dante's expressions of not being Mexican enough and not speaking better Spanish at least acknowledged a unique insecurity we see in this region. His offer of the art book to Ari's family and how it was received showed the contrast between the more Americanized Mexican Americans here and those that are much more bicultural. I admit I haven't read the book. So I could be missing something. However, I bought the book and its sequel at the theater where they had a table set up. Still a very enjoyable heartwarming movie. Thanks for making it. It's a jewel for an underrepresented community (both LGBTQ and El Paso and the US-MX border region).
Sadly the state of Texas doesn't [currently] make it easy for films to shoot in Texas. They did as much filming as they could around El Paso, but then too, there was the challenge of finding locations such as the Memorial Park Pool, which in the 80s was nothing like the aquatic facility today.

The book is so beautiful and I can see how much love they have poured in to this, I am really excited to see it
