Mahindra E2O Plus, Treo: Here's How India's Most Popular Electric Cars Are Made!

  • Here on the Transport Evolved channel, we've toured plenty of car factories, and seen how some of the world's most popular electric cars are made.
But back in April, we were honored to add India's Mahindra Electric to our list of car factories, learning exactly how the Mahindra E2O Plus and Treo electric vehicles are made. Unlike other modern electric car factories -- which use a lot of complicated computer equipment, Mahindra Electric's approach to vehicle manufacture is elegantly simple, churning out 12,000 vehicles a month in what is primarily a manual factory.

It is cleaner for the environment so helps them improve air quality domestically as well. It can also get them a lead on providing vehicles that suit the domestic market in a way a big multinational would not because they are catering to multiple global markets rather than local markets.

Hopeful the rest of the world will follow? To me it looks more like prevent being overrun, because the rest of the world ignored the problem for so long. The major EV producers (in numbers) are in China and India. If they decide to go onto the world market (pretty sure they will at some point, at the latest after the home market is saturated), they will have tons of expertise, that in the rest of the world maybe only Tesla has.

It more of a modular system integration facility than a manufacture factory. Most of the work for systems and chassis are managed by sourcing it from other local production companies following the design specification; In a way, it creates a more diverse ecosystem with various technology products and also gives more jobs. Also "Handmade" has a nice ring to it a kind of personal touch to it wouldn't you say?

I think a Treo would be a wonderful "second car" - just a bit more storage than my bicycle for trips to the supermarket and no need to get out the car for collecting and dropping various people off. I suppose I might think twice before putting a child in the back. I don't know if it would cope with a motorway but a lot of my family's trips are local and don't need that.

Nothing to envy the Peugeot infomercials of the 80's and 90's

E2O has been declared unfit to run on Indian roads(as per the new safety standard which is equivalent to Europe now...Finally), and so now they will be supplying it to neighboring countries where the safety norms are still lax.

Interesting strategy of Mahinda. On Indian front, they concentrate on lower mass end of the market (3 wheeler for public transport and small car for economy concerned customer). On the international level, they are concentrating on ultra high end creating a company like Pininfarina who will make the worlds fastest electric car. Let’s see which card will be more successful. As a old Mahendra Jeep fan, hopefully both!

I'm not going to look through all the other comments, but I'm sure others have noted the Trio is an extremely happy looking EV.
