Always loved the confidence of Kambli. Great batsman... wish we would have seen the best of him and I honestly believe that he had more talent (natural stroke player) than tendulkar.
What a precociously gifted batsman Vinod Kambli had been.... I could still remember his initial couple of years in the international arena, '93-'94, in which he had been a very consistent and flamboyant slender-looking young batsman to watch with great flair, in contrast to his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar who had been a solid yet more sedate Gavaskar-like material. These videos send you back in memory lane where the game of Cricket had its true essence in it unlike now. ... In terms of sheer Cricketing talent, Kambli could have matched or even surpassed Tendulkar, but his career was cut short prematurely, partially due to his own faults too. Yet the selectors too should have given him a *proper* second chance rather than sidelining him for good quite unfairly after only one single failed series (WI tour of India, '95), especially given his early success and the fact that what a precocious talent this guy had been, sadly it was not to be. In that respect, VVS Laxman had been mighty lucky to survive through his early vulnerable/shaky period of 3-4 years until he blossomed into a world class batsman who, along with seemingly ever rock-solid Rahul Dravid, had been a master of bad wicket play. Quite clearly, this is nothing but double standards by the same selection panel. To their credit though, we could see the best of Laxman at least, but the case of Kambli had been one of the greatest "if"s of '90s; a player who had been far too good to be omitted without any *proper* second run after a single failed series in '95 in favor of Saurav Ganguly. The fact that Kambli couldn't play the short ball has been nothing but a myth propagated by those who had not watched him play at length, or by those who had wanted to dismiss him deliberately for some reason. Yes, he failed in that one single tour; WI tour of India in '95, to some short-pitched deliveries/bouncers, yet he was quite a capable player who could've easily overcome that slight hiccup had the selected persisted with him and given him at least a few more games instead of dropping him from the squad at the of 23-24. Even in terms of playing the short balls / bouncers, he was not someone like Saurav Ganguly or Michael Beven who simply had no answers to it. It had been more of a short-term vulnerability given the circumstances in contrast to the more permanent inability like in cases of the latter two; Ganguly and Bevan. The fact of the matter here is that, though some were able to flourish to their full potential or at least to a considerable portion of it, there had been certain others who too could have achieved pretty much the same level of greatness yet withered to be much lesser mortals in the end, may be due to many reasons. ...
However people like to put it, Kambli had his struggles against pace bowlers. But he was an exceptionally good player against spinners and medium pacers. Many a time he got his leg stump uprooted by pacers.
There is no doubt that Kambli was a far more elegant and an overall better stroke player than his best friend.. it's a treat to watch Sachin, but when Kambli is at the other end, I don't mind fast forwarding to watch Kambli's batting
