Nice vid Mandy. What would happen if someone hooked a shorted coil to your zapper?

I mean shorted on the primary windings

Yes, I understand what you're asking. This is now the second version of the Zapper since we introduced it, 7 years ago. It has dual 60 Amp transistors, cooling fans, and a big outter-resistor for protection. It will take shorted coils no problem. However, if you don't see a spark, no sense trying and trying, coil is bad. If coil shorted completely (rare) outside resistor will heat up. Most coils fail with carbon tracking or semi shorted windings. Thanks for viewing and feel free to call me if needed. www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/ignition_coil_pulser_tester.html

Is there any reason that you could not fire both 2 and 3 wire coils (coils with and without the ignitor) with your bi directional controller if it is set up correctly? I understand they are actuated differently. Would the back emf damage the bidirectional controller?

Hello Matt, Yes exactly, that's one of the reasons, back EMF. Also signal dwell or pulse width, RPM adjustment, and signal current strength. Ignition signals are NOT PWM signals.

Bro, I use a 5 volt battery to tickle the igniter in 4 lead modules and for 3 wire modules you can test by making and breaking 12v with a button. These tests and tests with "the zapper" are not great and will get u into trouble. The most important test is a dielectric breakdown HV test since that's how most fail. The potting compound breaks down and develops carbon tracks and arcing, reducing the output and causing incomplete ignition. The coil will still test fine. U need data. data the a ECU usually gets and will tell you what cylinder is misfiring. Worst of all and most of all you will get coils that are intermittent with engine temp. There are ways of using a scope to tell if all cylinders are firing using a current clamp. at the battery. Its super cool. a better way is to do like the ECU does and measure cylinder ionization.
