Greyhound bus stations closing around the nation

- While air travel is by far the most common way to get around, 16 million Americans ride Greyhound buses every year all across the country. But the Greyhound station in Dallas, Texas, like several others, will be closing its doors for good in October.
What's happening in Dallas is indicative of a trend nationwide: intercity bus stations like Greyhound closing or downsizing because they can't afford the space they're in. In some cases, the closures leave travelers to wait in parking lots or street corners for their next bus ride.

Property is causing too much greed
I think you’ve got the two mismatched
Private equity is literally killing industry.
They are just doing what their competition has done. None of the other companies use large terminals. So Greyhound is shedding debt and real estate. Instead they're going to a model of strictly a ticket office and a bus stop. The downside is that passengers no longer have the services of the actual bus station. Here in Philadelphia for example; the property that they rented is expected to be turned into part of a new basketball arena. The bus stop and ticket office has been moved three times already and they still have not found a permanent place. Hopefully, they will be moved next to the Amtrak station.
Please keep Greyhound going strong. 🙏

Encouraging African-Americans to consider withholding their votes in presidential elections until reparations are received is a powerful and thought-provoking idea.
"Let us recognize the incredible strength and influence of our collective voice. For centuries, African-Americans have fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and recognition of our fundamental rights. Today, we stand at a critical juncture in our history, where we have the opportunity to demand the acknowledgment of past injustices and the implementation of long-overdue reparations.
By exercising our right to vote strategically, we can send a resounding message to the nation and the world: that we refuse to accept the status quo any longer. We can use our voting power as a tool for change, insisting that our political leaders prioritize the issue of reparations. Our unity and determination can compel those in power to address the legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism that continues to impact our communities today.
Imagine the impact of millions of African-Americans coming together to demand reparations as a prerequisite for our support in presidential elections. Our collective stance would reverberate across the political landscape, igniting conversations, debates, and, ultimately, action. By leveraging our voting power in this way, we can demonstrate that we will no longer settle for empty promises or superficial gestures.
Let us remember the trailblazers and activists who paved the way for our rights and opportunities. Let us honor their legacy by using our votes as a force for change, a demand for justice, and a catalyst for progress. Together, we can inspire a new chapter in our nation's history, one that acknowledges the painful truths of our past and paves the way for a more equitable and inclusive future.
Our decision to withhold our votes until reparations are addressed is a declaration of our worth, our dignity, and our unwavering commitment to a fair and just society. It is a call to action, a rallying cry for accountability and reparative justice. Let us stand together, empowered by our history and driven by our vision for a better tomorrow. Our votes are not just ballots; they are instruments of change, and we will use them to shape a future that reflects our values, respects our experiences, and honors our resilience."copy paste and share.
They need some competition. Too bad Trailways went out of business.
Get money brokey
The Greyhound Corporation has been around well over 100 years. They've made lots of money. So why don't they own their terminals? 🤔
SAN Diego CA made this change approximately 15 years ago.
Most of their stations need heavy maintenance.
@roshelltannen9698 "Their Stations" ??? Wow...I I didn't think that Greyhound NOW actually "owned" any stations. 🤔🤣😂
Greyhound bus has changed ownership many times especially in the last few decades. Although the brand may be over 100 years old it has not been owned by the same organization over all those years. Just like the airlines they also are always looking for ways to cut costs. So not owning the terminals cuts a big expense they feel they do not need.
It isn't worth it. Cheaper and better to stop at the cities bus stations or commuter routes
Something about being at a Greyhound station. You really get a true sense of " everyday Americans" who share the ride with you.
Well the business model has changed. They are getting rid of formal bus terminals like the rest of the competition. They don't want to have the headaches of the real estate anymore. So now you just have a ticket office and a bus stop.
I had a feeling GREED had something to do with it

Indeed. Skid Row.
The greyhound station in Chicago is no joke 💀
Yeap..
In Atlanta is right in the projects ..
Mostly in redlight districts:)
Greyhound bus stations have been paid for many years ago. That was property owned out right. Greyhound is simply taking advantage of selling the property when Real Estate prices are high and moving their location into city center transportation centers paid for by the taxpayer.
I believe you are right they did the same here in Shreveport, la shut down the terminal downtown and move into the terminal for our local bus paid for by taxpayers
@@rodneywilliams3762 WOW!
@@rodneywilliams3762 while you may object to that happening it is at least better for the passengers since they have local transit connections. Also if the transit center has a waiting room and rest rooms passengers have a good spot to wait for either their connecting Greyhound or local bus instead of just being dropped off at some city street or lot with no services.
Actually ,in many cases the property is rental. Such as here in Philadelphia. None of the competition use large terminals.
The Greyhound station here in Philly closed overnight & the bus picks and drops off people on street corners. For a major city, this is tacky.

Thats says so much about Greyhound management. After 40/yrs to not buy the land of those stations. Which would help solidify their presence and business...
Greyhound used to own its stations. However, two years ago its former parent company, First Group, sold the operations to Flixbus, the current owner of Greyhound. Unfortunately, this sale did not include the ownership of the stations.
Instead, First Group sold the stations separately to various investment firms to make more money, and that's why we are in this predicament nationwide.
Understand why we have few leading companies globally...in every industry.

As a Navy veteran who served in San Diego - and had/has family in Los Angeles, Greyhound is a part of my story. My history. As a young man, newly relocated to Southern California for the Navy and not owning a car; Greyhound allowed me to escape to LA on the weekend to spend with my Aunt, Uncles and cousins. It was part of my “in-port, weekend routine” to take the bus and sit and relax for the journey while listening to my CDs as MP3s, iPhones Spotify and all of that didn’t exist. There was always a sense of concern and alert at the LA station on Alameida street, but nothing ever happened and Aunt Ruth always showed up to pick me up and it would be the start of a nice weekend!! These weekend excursions started in 1999. I was 19 years old. 43 now, - and greyhound isn’t an option I even consider these days with air and rail options almost everywhere. The dilapidated stations, lack of customer creature comforts etc leaves indelible marks on those who use the service.
a lot of people like to fly, but for budgets you may have a very big taxi ride before uber and even when uber and lyft came around, it can still be pricey to be 30 45 minutes away from the actual downtown in that big city that you might want to visit. I used to take greyhound a lot and Amtrak a few times. you are right about the customer service. at one station in Columbus Ohio i overjeard a customer say how sxomeone got rfobbed and shot while in the bathroom at greyhound. I remember the saint louis mo station being rough and a almost fight in the line in Indianapolis once. the bus driver had toi get some people who got out of some program wsith prison or something in Illinois somewhere and they were wanting to fight eachother. a woman at the Cincinatti Ohio greyhound station was nice and gave me ice for my bottled soda even though I didn't buy an iced drink they had. some little cafe thing they had. in New York City I saw a woman get slapped by a woman for making her mad in line. New York City was something else. people sleeping on teps and over 80 something gates. I think 86. a guy begged for money and someone saw him as a scammer in line and made him give the money back to the people. I almost didn't make it to Boston that night. everything was oversold for hours. they let me go through and get on. what I liked about greyhound at a lot of places, was that many things that I wanted to do, I could walk not far or catch a city bus or rail line to get to it if it was further.
I used to take greyhound all the time until I started to fly regularly. I don’t care how cheap they are the service is horrible. Haven’t rode them in probably 15 years
18 years for me. Megabucks was better.
But I love flying and driving my own car
Greyhound is for bums
As a former Greyhound driver who drove out of Phoenix when they closed the Los Angeles station. I knew it was the beginning of the end. Flexbus is going to do something similar to what the WWE did to WCW.
What years did you drive for Greyhound ? .
Greyhound was hit very hard with deregulation in 1980. First thing Greyhound did after deregulation was to go non-union.
The old LA station sucked. It was inconvenient for riders and you when you walked out of that station you walked right into skid row.

You were lucky to have had such an adventure. I tried once too… but I had already messed up my back by then and it was excruciating. I would have loved to get some greyhound adventures.
Same here I travel from South Bend, Indiana to California and I enjoyed it. Took 3 days and I don’t regret it 😂😅😊

Doesn't help that Flixbus now owns Greyhound. If you have ever taken Flixbus in the U.S., you know that they only use street corners and transit center bus stops to pick up and drop off passengers.
It's like that in Europe too. It was founded here.
How about Tufesa?
I have taken Flixbus to go from Buffalo to New York City. It was nine hours total. The stops in Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Scranton were not bus terminals but all outdoor parking lots just off of the interstate. Even in New York City our bus stop was a parking lot near Penn Station.
Yes I was picked up at an airport and dropped off at a gas station…lol😂👍

Greyhound is not going out of business but they are closing terminals. They will still pick people up in those cities but the passengers won't have a building to sit in to wait for the bus.
@@MafiaKingfishNOLA That seems like a bad business decision. Where are people going to wait for the bus at?
Don't you dare close my bus station.

Man not greyhounds I’ve used them many times in the past
Indicative of a thing called greed.,
Their customer service is horrible. I haven't rode for so many years. Lot more convenient for me to just drive.
Do you thinkl that some serious competition would cause them to shape up ?
Our terminal in Montgomery, AL closed theirs and moved into the city bus line intermodal terminal downtown.
In Shreveport, LA ours did too a few yrs ago
Miami also built a huge Intermodal Center near its Airport & Greyhound moved its main station there. You have access to the city's Metrorail system, TRI-Rail Commuter Rail & local buses as soon as you get off the bus. The station is very nice too! It looks like an airport terminal.
Using city transit terminals are a good idea especially if there is an enclosed waiting area. It makes it easy for passengers wanting local transportation around the city Greyhound is serving. I know years ago some intercity bus service operated out of my local suburban transit terminal in Upper Darby, Pa. So it can be done but Greyhound has to get the city or transit authority to agree to it and I am sure have to pay some rent to help maintain the station.
It's pure greed, i live in a relatively large metro area, there are no Greyhound stations, they pickup and drop people off at truck stops and the airport.
Greed? On whose part? Please, expound on this. I can't wait to hear the answer. I'm guessing you have no idea how a business runs and just assume, like a lot of uninformed people, that it's "greed". I hear a lot of dummies say "corporate greed" all day long, but have NO IDEA how the economy or business works. Again, please elaborate. If you are in a "relatively large" metro area, please explain how "greed" would cause a Greyhound terminal to close. I'm genuinely interested in your reply, because logically speaking, it SHOULD be quite profitable to have a depot there ....... right? Who is greedy here, and how and why, and what is the benefit to closing it on their part? Thanks in advance.

Better security, travel information, dining, on and on.
What parent in their right mind would send an unaccompanied minor on a Greyhound bus? Lowlife scumbags, career criminals, and ghetto trash ride the Greyhound. Also, how is an airline passenger going to wait on a street corner to catch a plane? Planes need things like runways.

Here in Los Angeles, the Greyhound Bus Station has now moved from it's not so great location in Downtown LA right over to Union Station, which was just five minutes away so, now we have the trains and the busses together at the same terminal. This also makes it perfect for parking in the underground structure, something Greyhound didn't have before. European bus line FlixBus has also joined forces with Greyhound by acquiring the American bus line brand in 2023. I took this bus to Arizona in August of last year because the rail track in and around the Palm Springs area was damaged for a week or so after the storms hit bad out there in the desert. Not only was the Flixbus fine and arrived on time, but it was roomier and you can buy the seat next to you for half price if available, and the bus wasn't expected to be full at any of the stops. I was able to and did so, it was great to have all that extra space for just a few dollars more. It's a good deal. I like a bus moving at a good pace on the road with me not having to drive. The stops are quick and efficient, no bother. I keep myself busy with plenty to do. The ride was only 6 hours to my destination, and it went by fairly fast. I'd take a bus again, no hesitation !
That's good to know. I remember years ago when I had to take a Bolt or Greyhound from Barstow to the Greyhound location near Skid row. I would have to walk thru that neighborhood to get to Union Station where I would catch a Megabus to San Francisco. I made that trip multiple times. The next time I'm back home in Barstow, it's good to know I can catch a Greyhound to Union. But I don't think I can use Megabus anymore, but I still can take a train to SF
Greyhound delivers the worst product of any transportation model in America. I hadn't been on a Greyhound bus since 1980 to travel to my grandmothers for the summer. The service was sketchy even then and now downright disgrace from news stories I've seen and UA-cam videos. They seem to have no regards for the people who have to use it out of necessity. I've seen numerous stories of horrendous customer service ,rude bus drivers and very poor facilities.. oh yeah the awful delays.

Greyhound has been going down for years. Constantly being late and all kinds of different (strange) people used to ride Greyhound. The last time I was going to take Greyhound was Dec. 2022. All I was going to do was take Greyhound from Greensboro NC to Raleigh NC, 2 hours. It was a morning bus (8am), and it was very cold that morning. The bus NEVER showed up!! And there were several people wanting to get on the bus going South. BTW: The terminal closed the year before, so we had to wait outside. I waited for about an hour, then went downstairs to the amtrak station (we are lucky in that sense, the bus and train station are next to each other) and purchased a 12noon amtrak to Raleigh. And do you think I got my money back, no. I can't remember what flimsy excuse they gave me, but since I'm a senior citizen, the cost for me wasn't bad. And that is not the only time I have had issues with Greyhound over the past years. So I say, GOOD RIDANCE To GREYHOUND in Greensboro NC. There is another bus that has taken over, Flex Bus. I haven't ridden that & probably won't. I have better luck with amtrak.

A few years ago I rode the Greyhound from Miami to Atlanta and back. This was around the time Megabus was becoming a thing. I guess the alternatives are here.
The terminal in downtown San Diego is now closed.
60 years ago a parent could buy a ticket and put their kid on greyhound and the drivers and bus terminal personnel would take the kid and deliver them to a relative at the destination. This was commonplace, done regularly.

All they have to do is partner with 24-hour gas stations all over the US. They don't need those large bus stops. Buy tickets online. This will help gas stations make more food/drink sales and can all be located along interstate highways. Stop overcomplicating life.
Greyhound has been in business for over a 100 years. Why don't they own their own terminals?
With Texas big as it is, I don't understand why train system has not been implemented?
I'm in a different situation I assume but now that Greyhound picks up near the McCarran airport in Vegas and can drop me off at Union station in LA, it's way more convenient than the older ran down inconvenient downtown Greyhound stations they used to use.
Standing on a corner with luggage in skid row for an hour plus waiting for the bus lines to start running for the day after getting off the Greyhound red eye so I can get to the metro station to hop on the train home was loads of fun. It's always very cold at those times too.

Alden Global Capital… buying newspapers, cutting staff and purchasing 33 Greyhound stations? Good reporting, but who are these people of partners investors and their purpose over newspapers & transportation?
Greyhounds don't own the stations. I used to take the bus all around in the mid-2000s. Slowly but surely you can see the decline in facilities. Not every bus station looks like Newark or Baltimore Maryland. A lot of good people depend on greyhounds trails.
I haven’t rode Grey Hound in years but when I was younger and money was a little tighter it’s a pretty economical way to get around the country, yes it’s not as fast as a plane ride obviously BUT you get to sit there and see the countryside and it’s pretty relaxing, I think Greyhound provides a viable alternative to airlines and people who don’t want or can’t drive for whatever reason.
Bus Depots should be installed and ran by cities similar to Train stations - allowing different companies to lease space or use neighboring lots to safely pick up passengers. DC placing theirs in a parking structure at Union station was a smart idea in my opinion.
Yes that was a good solution and is done in other cities. Boston is upgrading their bus and train station to provide good connecting services.
When taking the Bus is just as expensive as Flying no one is surprised.
Flex bus bought Greyhound for 88 million dollars 💸
I don’t know why Greyhound can’t relocate to a new terminal especially in big cities. For example here in Philadelphia we lost our good terminal for basically on street pick up. We have a very good train station at 30 th and Market street where the subway and trolleys serve that station. It already has limited bus service that Amtrak offers as a connection. I don’t see why Greyhound can’t get some kind of agreement with Amtrak to use their station for their service. It also is just off one of our major interstate highways so it should even fit into Greyhounds scheduled busses with minimal street running to make the station. Otherwise they also could maybe also use the airport that again would have good terminal services as well as good local transit connections. That is also just off I-95 our major north south interstate highway so again it would be an easy on and off for the busses to get on or off the highway. I realize both Amtrak and the airlines may not want busses as they could see them as competition but the also would provide good connecting services for smaller cities and towns not served by either air or train. I am sure it would also help Greyhound since passengers would then have a good all weather shelter while waiting for their bus.
Self driving Greyhounds coming?
Or Mr. Roboto will be our new driver
No. Not happening.
Ugh no. Please no.
I last used it in 2011. Cool trip visiting the south. Missed 2 buses trying to return to New York
Our greyhound station moved several times, each one worse. They finally closed one beside a laundromat.
My mother, brother and I rode Greyhound from NJ to visit my aunt and uncle in Georgia in the seventies. Never again.
Same thing with the Philadelphia terminal. The lease was up so they had to go somewhere else. They ended up having passengers wait on the street with no bathroom
The Greyhound San Diego terminal was pretty good but was moved to an outdoor location near Petco Park.
Petersburg Virginia close up early you left out side
Closing stations downtown has been happening for a long time. I was in Baltimore in 2003 when they announced closing that location. It has to do with moving certain types of people from those locations. It's like closing a homeless shelter, which have been happening as well. They just don't want certain types downtown.
Lol that's all Baltimore has.
