  • Working on a 2001-2007 Toyota Sequoia with a broken rear trunk handle. In this video I will show you how to open the trunk and how to replace the handle out. It's not a hard process just a tedious one. To me the only hard(more like tricky) part is trying to figure out how to take off the trunk cover panel. I hope this helps you if your tackling this job yourself.

This is a great video and the instructions are clear and detailed. I had the same exact issue with my '03 Sequoia and just finished fixing it.
I made a few mistakes along the way and I'd like to share so others may benefit:
The hardest part of this is taking off the license plate pocket (the plate holder) WITHOUT breaking any tabs .This thing is plastic and if you pull on it the wrong way or impose undue stress - the tabs will break - I broke 2 of them and one was the tab for the little stud that holds the lock in place - YIKES! The second was the lower tab under the lock that you push out. In the process of pulling out the pocket, if the thing spring back, it will re-engage in the hole and if you're not paying attention, the next tug to remove the pocket, it will break.
OK, here's what I did - I epoxied the stud back in place and just left the lower tab as is - broken. In the end it did not matter much since all other tabs are engaged. A new plastic license pocket for this vehicle is $230 online - so...NO thanks. The epoxy worked just fine!
Next, after I installed the new latch onto the license pocket, I made the mistake of trying to insert he cable into the latch before putting the pocket back on the vehicle - DON'T. It will ruin the cable as the stresses will break the cable tip where it holds the cable tip in place. So....I ordered a new cable for $26 and this time, I installed the license pocket and then inserted the cable. was relatively easy. Oh, and I had to takeoff the lock assembly to insert eh new cable in it too, but that wasn't a big deal.
I did use all OEM parts as suggested and saved a boat-load on labor.
BTW, the back power window had stopped working a while back, but I never bothered to mess with it. I knew what was wrong (the stop assembly with two bolts and a spring). There's a tech bulletin from Toyota that says to remove it, but all you need to do is to loosen the two bolts, slide it along its track all the way down and re tighten. Since I was doing this work, I fixed that part too and the window works like new!
    Hope this helps somebody.

One more thing, once I connected the cable back to where it needed to go and closed the hatch I was disappointed that it wouldn't open. Someone suggested putting a zip tie on the cable near the ball in order to shorten the cable a bit. I tried that and it worked!

That's a good idea. i have also added a lead ball or 2 to the cable, using lead fishing sinker balls, and squeezing them onto the cable with pliers.

Great video! I just replaced mine today and it was easy! One word of advice, you can unscrew the 4 nuts holding the window mechanism and then when you lift the door you can move the mechanism easy so you can have a full and clear access to the latch making the removal and install far more easy.

Thank you! This video was excellent. I did the majority all by myself with minimal help from my dad. Funny thing, the hardest thing in this whole process for me was getting the damn license plate off!

helped me out immensely, from some of the other videos on this were nice that they tried, but didnt go into depth on removing the handle. You save me probably a $500 dealer cost for 3 hours of work and a sold $15 metal piece from amazon.

It won't lock with the key and when I try to lock with the remote - it beeps - locks all the doors - then it beeps and unlocks that back door - WHAT - HELP?

great video with a lot of detail, I ordered an aftermarket handle but I got a metal one instead of plastic/poly ones. My issue now is when my parents owned it my dad made a makeshift handle and the cable has rust build up.

it easier to use hanger wire reach from outside right under the middle of the license plate with finger first you'll find/see the seal that cover the dust hole, remove that seal, bend the wire like a hook insert it through that hole snag on the latch pull to the left you can hear a click hold it and lift the gate open.

why didn't you open the window and access the trim and screws while standing up? You can then roll up the window, then pull the cable to open the door and sit on the outside to fool with the rest of the disassemble.

Thanks! How did you seat the cable in the handle? I can't get enough pressure on it when reaching inside. I think I'm going to have to pull off the license plate surround so I can access the handle from the outside.

Thanks for the info! I got to the part where you pull the ball on the top of the wire cable but it still won't open. I'm thinking it may be locked or the lock is broken because it stopped making noise in the back when I push the unlock button. Do you have any videos or tips on how to manually unlock the latch?

I just replaced this handle on my 2005 sequoia thanks for the help. I do have a couple issues though... the latch and handle work fine but now the lock mechanism won’t work. I’ve tried with the key and the electronic door lock. Also the rear window won’t roll down with the key in the back door. I made sure the plugs were plugged in before securing the lock. Any idea what would cause this?

    • @RevvedUpKnowledge

I’m stuck. The latch I got is a metal one and I don’t know if that’s what’s screwing everything up. The lock mechanism works until I loop the cable around he latch and then the lock mechanism stops working and is stuck in either lock or unlock whichever it was in when I looped the cable to the latch.

Be careful when removing the exterior panel to push out the bolt by the lock from the inside of the door. That bolt head, which is glued to the back of the exterior panel, can be easily broken loose from the panel if not push out from the inside. Mine broke off and I had to glue it back on. Not sure how successful that will work.

Hi. I have a 2008 Toyota Sequoia. The window regulator is rusted and the window is down because it came off the track. I have a power latch/ handle. I took it a body shop and they cant open the lift gate. What is the cheapest way to repair it? They want to charge me an arm and a leg

Cable might be unhooked from either end if it’s easy/no resistance
