- Star Wars creative and costume design are some of the best in the film industry, there one of the reason why the original trilogies have aged so well. One of the reasons is a lot of the armor, uniforms and vehicles were based off or inspired by real life military gear. Today we'll be taking a look at the Rebel Alliance and the real life gear that inspired it's creators.

The Patka helmet (being replaced now) was adapted from the Bungee helmets of British and Indian paratroopers in WW2 and subsequent wars. Those were made of rubber and used extensively by the SAS and IA Para brigades. Thus, the Bungee would the original that the star wars prop was based on
@Proud Indian that ashtray is one of those helmets which can stop a 7.62 caliber bullet. The problem with patka it doesn't cover the entire head and a Little bit heavy. Originally built for the sikh light infantry so that they can wear there turban and a forehead protection ! Having a account name proud indian without a basic knowledge about patka and Calling it "inverted ashtray" basically summerize you are one of those m416 pubg warriors. What you want level three helmet ?
@Proud Indian 🤣🤣lol . Stay in your limbo where i am a bangladeshi ! Although in reality you are just another kind of shit with a 5 year's old brain.
@A P Checkout the Militia helmet from AR500..Army should go for these newer steel helmets instead of kevlar, much cheaper too. Most western defense contractors are making the shift. Tell me what you think
@Proud Indian go back to cleaning those inverted cesspools in your locality, just because you have cheap internet doesn't mean you have to use it.
I would love to see Future Indian Armed Forces wearing something like Mandalorian Armor or Clone Wars Republic Clone Armour combat uniform.
I heard that they actually had real ex-military guys be extras for the entire land battle in Rogue One, which makes sense, because everyone actually takes cover, mounts weapons correctly, flushes, etc., that you just don't see executed in the background in movies.
Absolutely loved how much they grounded this film.
Allen is smiling.
Because the channel got verified.
Nice. As an infantry platoon sergeant and star wars aficionado I appreciate this. 😊
Thank you for your service sir🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you for your cervix bro
How often do you see the M82 in combat
Interesting fact on Star Wars blasters is that a lot have the base of real life guns, even the Death troopers have MP40 mag pouches on their upper left chest
RandimRiceFarmer most of the Scariff rebels have blasters built on M16s
Jamie Forsythe The DLT-19 Heavy Blaster rifle is literally just a MG34 painted black
This is part of the reason why Star Wars is more popular than Star Trek, the weapons look real unlike Star Trek and comes across as more believable.
*Edit: I replied to you before I even watched the video, glad to see Generation Tech and I think along the same wavelength!
MG-34*
www.imfdb.org/wiki/Star_Wars
jyns weapons was a luger, hand solo a broom handled mouser, rebels on hoth mg44, and so on and so on and is why i dislike TFA...the weapons these looked like utter ass and what pilot (caugh) Poe carriers a huge ass rifle in the xwing with him...is why tankers used greese guns to save room and nowadays m-4s...
2:53 if you look closely that's an M60!
R&N RailProductions All Star Wars weapons are RL weapons with a few added cosmetic changes. You can find the entire list at imfdb.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Original_Trilogy
Well, that's not the entire list, but the most notable ones are there.
R&N RailProductions Damn! You are right! ROGUE ONE WAS THE G.O.A.T IN THE STAR WARS SERIES!
R&N RailProductions YEA
you dont have to look closly its obvious all they did was add a scope
can you please do Mandalorian armor
Talib I think he has already done a video on the Mandalorians and their armor check out his archived videos. I might be wrong but I dont think so
jesusoftheapes okay thanks
Talib yes he has done one
you should hit up Ian at forgotten weapons I think he’s done a whole thing on weapons in star wars.
you mentioned the color of the rebel pilot uniforms but you failed to mention the fact that they used RAF high altitude pressure suits for parts of the suit, most notably the iconic ribbed white chest piece.
Wow that was sick! I hope this will be a long series
yea we've decided to do the weapons series as well its too cool not to
Generation Tech you guys find the subjects I never knew I wanted to watch
Generation Tech
Cool.
we leak the videos to our patreons subscribers a bit earlier sometimes
That is why Gen Tech is king of Star Wars fan made videos . Allen is amazingly good a picking out things that are super interesting about Star Wars but are not the same old talking points other videos cover . So is Ben but Allen really sees the Star Wars universe through an artistic eye and makes the best videos about this Universe . He knows that the fiction side of Star Wars is only half of what makes Star Wars so special ! Allen like myself sees the nuts and bolts of Star Wars as part of the magic that makes it so real for all of us who love the films ! Tell your friends about Gen Tech because 100 k is just the tip of the iceberg for this channel !
I love Generation Tech. Its not yet another Star Wars channel. It puts a real life spin on Star Wars, and its pretty interesting.
Could you do a video on real life armor influenced by Star Wars
an interesting twist...
Generation Tech Saddam Hussein's son, Uday, actually designed a ballistic helmet for the Iraqi Fedayeen directly off of Darth Vader. He was a huge Star Wars fan and felt that the helmets and all black uniforms would be intimidating. There are no known records of how many Iraq manufactured, but every now and then they show up as war trophies in the U.S.. As the Iraqi government fell into shambles during the Second Gulf War many of the helmets became lost to history.
Vitalmac 22 ikr I saw them on Google
5:23 A S T R O N A U T P U T I N
COSMONAUT PUTIN, Its Russia, pls remember that
Glad you covered Rogue One uniforms, I loved how the uniforms reminded me of Vietnam war movies/footage too.
The Rebel Endor helmets were inspired by early ww2 Donut Tanker helmets like the one made by Rawlings. British used a similar style in 1941 Libya. Canadians had one with ear flaps as well.
As soon as you said gorka, I was like "OMG DAYZ bruh"
This video left me wanting more. Much more. I'd watch an hour or two of this type of content. Happily!
Thanks for acknowledging the Phantom's greatness.
yea she's a beauty
dood.. you need to have WAY more subs. Ive been binging your videos.
how are you not over a million!!!
Dude, you nailed it with the Rogue One uniforms. I'm a militaria guy and i noticed it in the theaters
Now those are a few details I did not notice, like the helmet deathsticks. Thanks for making this video!
Happy 100,000 subscribers!
+Star Commander thanks!
Generation Tech congrats!!
Love your channels, mate! I’m totally covid-binging them the past two days or so! Just one thing I haven’t seen (but I imagine that you and American Ben kick it around a bit somewhere) is my favorite, okay- honesty here- one of my two favorite Stupid Star Wars blunders... when during the trench run in Episode IV, someone advises Porkins over the vox, “Eject! EJECT!” Without a voidsuit or sealed helmet even, he’s a dead man!
Finished the video I am highly satisfied!
Please come again
I've been waiting for a video like this for a long time.....
Dude!!! Very nice. I enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work
Always a big fan of military uniforms and weaponry. I look forward to videos of all eras.
Your stuff is head and shoulders above most stuff on the inter-web. This may be your best video yet! And with that, I am now a subscriber.
thanks welcome to the channel!
I always look forward to another video from you guys each Morning! Keep it up! I love your content!
+BOBBIO2009 FTT thanks!
Great video. I always loved the rebel war gear in star wars. It made them look as "our boys" compared to robotic, almost alien empire. And Rogue One was a true gear freak paradise with all the badass firearm custom modifications and vintage battle gear . By the way the Putin cameo is as golden as ever in your vids XD
Such a great idea! I would love to see more!
This was an awesome episode I hope to see more of these
Wow this is really cool and interesting, thx for doing this
this was a really good vid man
Awesome! TY! And may the Christmas be with you!
As always amazing video great content. And CONGRATS on 100,000 subs! Been here since 40,000
Love your shit!
awesome thanks!
Love the armor comparisons. I always wondered how star wars costumes were how they looked.
One of your most interesting videos!
Excellent video and insights.
Great video. Well done.
Good video keep up the good work
I love videos like this, thank you so much.
+Jonathan Davenport thanks for watching
it looks like the blaster the gunner was using on the Y-wing was modeled off the M60 light machine gun
edit: U-wing I mean
TM Curvy Squirrel correct! By the way, it was U-Wing, the Y-Wing is a bomber
Yeah it's kinda nice cuz it's a subtle nod to the Vietnam War
I really enjoyed this video my dude
As always, brilliant
That door gunner on hu-wing looked like he was operating an m60 lmg, another Vietnam Era fav!
Chase Paul It was an M60. The scene it's in looks like an homage to Full Metal Jacket.
F-4 Phantom is living testament that with big enough engines, even a brick will fly. This will always be my favorite military jet.
One of your best videos
awesome video, can't wait for the empire version
Another great vid. Thanks guys
thanks for watching!
Done!!! Are u also gonna cover similar discussion for ships Generation Tech?
If you’re going to give a shoutout to an app, do it at the end. This video had a YT ad in the beginning, one 20 seconds in, we had to sit through the topps shoutout, then 20 seconds into the real discussion another YT ad
The Rebel Fleet Trooper helmet was actually the Talker variant of the M1
I was about to say the same thing glad you pointed it out
Pretty sure the Rebel Fleet Trooper (and other helmets) were based on the WW2 US Navy MK2 "Talker" helmet.
This will be an awesome series. The guns part would be epic. So many ww2 guns and even some ar15s in rogue one oddly enough
balista4 Check out imfdb.org for a complete listing of Star Wars weapons. I found out from that site that all the clone troopers in the prequels were CGI:(
Congrats on 1 lakh subs
+Aarav Tulsyan thank you
GT is surprisingly in-depth and accurate with lore and I'm impressed.
yup I was surprised as well, but we tend to do our best work when we analyze the military aspects of star wars
woo got a reply my UA-cam career is done
Great vid.
That's what I like about this channel, you two bring a lot of heart to your art.
thanks!
awesome video
Many of the helmets used by the Rebels on Leia's frigate and the Death Star Workers were modeled off the WW2 US Navy gunners helmets.
This is why I love Star Wars, the armor and clothing is just awesome and realistic. That's why Rogue One is my third favorite Star Wars movie because of Vietnam like battle scene near the end of Rogue One:)
Well you beet me to it. Hope you didn't think I was trolling you. Love your videos by the way.
About the first helmet I saw similar ones in WW2 US Navy footage, particularity of anti-aircraft gunners.
Edit: the helmet I am referring to is the USN Mk. II Talker Helmet.
Ainsworth is a Liar. Do not buy his stuff! There's a reason why he got sued by Lucas. He did not make the molds, all he did was put the armor together. Liz Moore sculpted the Stormtrooper helmet and Brian Muir sculpted the Stormtrooper armor. Not Ainsworth! If you want the most accurate Stormtrooper armor go to RS Prop masters. Do your research. Other than that great video.
there were two helmets one sculpted by liz more one by nick pemberton, the one that was chosen and would go on to be the stormtrooper helmet was done in cheaper red clay that was nick pemberton's. That's also why Lucas lost his lawsuit.
Incorrect! if you read the lawsuit, you would know that Andrew LOST the multi million pound Cease and Desist lawsuit brought by Lucas in England. I've talked with Brian Muir personally about Andrews "job" as a costume assembler at the studio. Just because you worked there, doesn't mean you Created the designs.
yeah lol would be like me saying i was a costume fitter to actors and i helped with molds so i definitely designed them
Wyatt... YES!!!
Theres a reason why Ainsworth cant sell to the US.
UK laws may agree with him, because how old the film is, but he is still a LIAR!
Ainsworth designed nothing! He just help build the costumes.
Talked to Brian Muir personally about his.
Ainsworth first claimed to have built the helmet, and then he claimed to build the armour as well! Stay far far away, from Andrew Ainsworth!
Pemberton was a scenic artist not a sculptor, the Helmet was designed and sculpted as said above
I'd love to see a Stargate vs Star Wars series if it's possible!
Blasters vs P90's? well the P90 would penetrate storm trooper body armor... and one replicator could take over a star destroyer..
If this is after The Ark of Truth, then I'm pretty sure the 304s would tear apart any Imperial Fleet, especially the Odyssey.
Jack O'Niell: "This, (holding a blaster) is a weapon of terror. It use to intimidate the enemy. This, (holding a P90) is a weapon of war. It's made to kill your enemy."
A video about the blasters would be really interrresting!
The rebel helmets always kinda reminded me about the East German ones, they had a part that went behind the head but not as big
The trouble with having life support in the xwing and not being in a space suit is they can't eject when their fighters get blown up, so if your fighter goes down it's certain death. At least with a space suit you might have a chance of being picked up. With some minimal rocket propulsion on it you could even have a bit of movement ability.
The officer cap was inspired by the Japanese officer cap
I do like the authenticity of the uniforms in the OT era but in all honesty much of the designs of the original trilogy are stuck in the 70's. The original star wars could benefit from having very basic, blocky designs because that was reminiscent of industrial design at the time the movies were made. But now we're 40 years in the future and everything is far more sleek and streamlined. Thats why I enjoy the aesthetic of the prequels far more. Also the fact that everything was far more elegant in the prequels helps highlight the detriment of the Empire's ultra-utilitarian influence. I would also argue that the designs of the prequels try to push Star Wars into more fantasy than sci fi, whereas the OT designs make it feel far more sci fi by basing much of the designs on real-world clothes and machinery. Either way no one can argue that the uniforms and armor of the OT were superbly designed not only for a fictional movie but even from a functional standpoint (Save for Stormtrooper helmet visibiliy)
+Fletcher .K that's a great breakdown of differences and strengths of design between the ot and prequels
I have discovered the aesthetic of the sequels are basically infuenced from today‘s minimalistic Zen style, which sets them apart from the ancient exotic prequels and blocky old school industrial OT which I really like it. However, the Resistance in TFA looks very awkward, unlike the designs Galactic Republic, Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire and the First Order.
I felt that the Resistance from the sequels's uniforms and equipment should take more inspiration from current US military's personal infantry equipment, similar to what we saw in Rogue One and OT.
Revive Hans My only big problem with prequel uniforms was the Phase I clone trooper helmets, which just looked so cheap and lazy compared to the amazing Phase II helmets.
You can't blame them for using 70s tech that was modern at the time, that's an unfair criticism.
Hey you should do the clone trooper armor as well love to see the things that influenced their creation!
I have to add...some of the rebel uniforms at Scarif reminded me a bit of the gear for the 'Colonial Marine Corps' in 'Aliens'.
ANY ONE WHO IS RUNNING IS A SCARIF TROOPER and ANY ONE WHO IS STANDING IS A WELL DISCIPLINED SCARIF TROOPER
I've always wondered how religions who have turbans wore helmets
There are different types of turbans. Sikh pilots wear a smaller headgear called patka under their helmets.
This actually helped me plan out my cosplay of a rebel soldier
+Anchor Ankura that's what we're here for!
Generation Tech thanks you guys make it so easy & simple keep it coming :)
2:45 *Fourtunate Son Intensifies*
Another interesting fact: in Star Wars we can see a camo used by rebels that looks so much like modern camo called “a tacs”)
Do an episode on their weapons too!!!
Most of the wardrobe in the original trilogy was wwii military surplus, from the fleet troopers ( the Alderaanians) used navy shirts with a big and German boots, the throne seen shown the very rare 1920s marine dress uniform ( can't remember the model off the top of my head) and the most hilarious of them all, chewy was indeed walking around with a MG42 which was for same reason a sniper rifle.
Rebel soldiers from Rogue One uses WW2 US Army combat uniforms, gear and Helmets as well, however everything the Resistance soldiers from TFA wore is downgraded from the original trilogy.
I thought it was really cool to see that the gun used in the U-wing is built out of an M60 which is the actual machine gun mounted in Huey helicopters
The rebels donut helmets are also reminiscent of the British Airborne "Flash Gordon" and subsequent "Sorbo" helmets of WW2
Dear generation tech can you do a video on how to properly prepare and use Death Sticks and where to procure them
Dave Filoni should have from the beginning made the Star Wars movies he is the only one that knows Lucas and what he wants and what he thinks. so lets all push for Dave Filoni
"Since the Rebel fighters have life-support"
> DISNEY COMING IN WITH THE LIFE-SUPPORT TIE FIGHTER CHAIR OH MY GOD
One thing, when you talk about the orange x-wing suits, they also sort of look like fighter pilot suits from the 70s, at least here in Norway, it was normal for F-104 Starfighter pilots to where orange flight suits
nice video
"Alan"
- Some raptor on a plane
I love the F-4. My father used to be the WSO on that bird and I always thought it was one of the best aircraft made. May not have the air-to-air focus of an F-15, the stealth or maneuverability of a F-22, and the Air Force never put a gun on it, but it followed the simple principle that with enough thrust you can get a brick to fly.
Loved roge one, one of the best Star Wars movies
At 5:29, actually the orange colour suit that the Rebel pilots wear are actually pressurized suit and they do equipped with fully sealed oxygen mask just in case their fighter's life support system damaged by enemy fire or ejected into vacuum space.
SPOILER ALERT: Resistance pilots do have the the same equipment as Rebel predecessor, their fully sealed oxygen mask can be seen on The Last Jedi opening scene.(Rose's beautiful sister died in the battle whom also shown wear fully sealed oxygen mask when operating the bomber's gunner.)
The weirdly shaped helmets were inspired off the m56 East German stahlhelm
I think the the fact that the costumers were told that George didn't want to notice was intentional, so that it looked like something that you would find in real life.
You guys should do Klingons vs The Empire
I subbed you bro
Not gonna watch the video just here to say, you don’t say?...wow who would’ve thought! God you guys are geniuses.
Yo! The patka helmet of thw indian army has been around since i was a kid and i'm 32 now....so its been there a long time
It might have been Booster Blue in the Helmet, half the damn rebellion lives off that spice.
Hey Allan, I'm curious what your background is. Military history, combat arms, airsoft?
The "ring helmet" look like they are based on ww2 British Para Sorbo training helmet
