- Welcome to our first Deep Dive with Laser Dave!
In this new series, we will present a new training topic that will focus on specific applications or features to provide laser knowledge that will help our customers become more efficient and profitable in their business.
This month’s video is an in-depth tutorial on how to produce a popular laser application for the outdoor sports and recreation market: 3D grip patterns used for items such as firearms and knives. This application is only one example of how a laser system can be used to make money by marking and engraving unique items with high-perceived value such as firearms, knives, and accessories.

As usual Dave, awesome video…
amazing ..thks for sharing ...
learn alot ..
Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing your technique and files! I wish I could afford a Trotec laser.
Thanks for the video. Dude you rock. That was worth a thumbs up and a Subscribe.
Thank you so much! 😃
I do not have a Trotec laser. I do have a cheap 60 watt CO2 from China and a 30 Watt Raycus Fiber laser. Thank you so much for sharing. I guess you know how much time you just saved me.
We are glad to help!!
Hello Dave. How deep and crisp will this checkering pattern be on wallnut wood if we used an 80 watt Q 400 lazer from your company. Thank you
Our Q series laser cannot process relief mode; only the Speedy and SP series laser machines.
Anyone know how to do this on light burn?
Hey Dave! My company just bought a trotec speedy 360, and im excitedly waiting to begin working with it. Will this "releif mode" work on all trotec lasers, or is it only a feature of some? Thanks!
Any Speedy and SP series lasers can do this, so your new Speedy 360 will have this capability.
Can this be used with job control instead of Ruby? We were advised by our maintenance tech to not switch to Ruby yet
Yes, Job control will work with this process.
I am looking for someone to checker a set of polymer grips. I can’t find anyone that can do it, could you offer this service?
We do not do work as we make the laser machines, but you can reach out, and we will provide you with a local customer who can do the work for you. 866-226-8505
@@TrotecLaser thank you!
Hi what is the power of the laser on this video? Works awesome !
Hi there! This was run on a Speedy 400 120-watt laser.
Thanks I love it !!! Sorry about this annoying question, here your brand is not available I am from Argentina, I will to buy a co2 90 watt do you think that is not enough for small project like checkering knife scales? . Thanks !!
@@maticuchillos If you are working with organic materials, like wood, a CO2 laser should work beautifully for checkering!
@@TrotecLaser Thanks Mate!
Would this work on acrylic?
Yes, this process will work on acrylics, but after the depth is engraved, run the laser file with a second pass out of focus away from the acrylic by 12mm or 1/2" to glaze (smooth out) the textured finish.
Can this work in Illustrator??
Absolutely!
@@TrotecLaser is it a similar approach? It would be awesome to see the setup for Illustrator too. :)
Great vid as usual btw 👍🏼💯
@@sethp5640 Yes would be nice to see in illustrator !
I haven't run illustrator but a quick search for "clipping mask" seems to be the equivalent of what is done here.
