  • On September 19th, 2022, the Storm Prediction Center issued a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms for much of upstate New York. A low amplitude shortwave trough moved in rapidly from the Great Lakes providing some upper-level support for unsettled weather. While the attendant surface cyclone was weak, dewpoints in the mid 60s along with steeping lapse rates resulted in decent instability within the warm sector. Additionally, shear profiles provided the possibility for rotating updrafts as a nearly southerly surface wind in the upper Hudson Valley veered to WNW in the mid-levels of the troposphere. This meant that any storms that formed were able to acquire some updraft rotation.
Initially, the main area of storms was expected immediately ahead of the cold front as it surged into the warm, humid airmass from the west. However, the presence of a stationary front in far NE New York seemed to play a role in the development of several discrete storm cells ahead of the main line of storms. Owing to veering low to mid-level wind profiles in the valley, these cells evolved into small, rotating supercells and presented rather impressive structure for upstate NY. Though no tornadoes occurred, these storms did develop wall clouds with broad rotation. I intercepted 2 of these supercells in eastern Saratoga County and was able to film their structure.
Finally, as these storms departed, the main squall line ahead of the advancing cold front then pushed through. This second complex presented linear storm modes as is expected with squall lines. As the cold pool associated with the complex pushed forward, it developed a photogenic shelf cloud that extended almost to the ground in some areas. Overall, wind reports with this complex were spotty and I observed very little in the way of wind damage near my filming location.

I've just discovered this video from my old stomping grounds. It is wonderful to see and hear an upstate NY thunderstorm, and this is excellent videography/editing.. You have a new subscriber.

Thankyou! And yes, I do enjoy Nor'easters as well. Its tough for me to chase them in my car though. Its not a great vehicle for snow.

Thankyou! Only a marginal risk day too. It definitely overperformed!
