  • Patty Duke lipsynks and does her best Streisand impersonation. A great tune from "Valley of the Dolls" written by André and Dory Previn.

I've seen some really funny impressions of this done by various women and many of them make sure to wear necklaces that are all over the place! Haha!

It's an oddly tuneless song, isn't it? Same with that damn "I'll Plant My Own Tree."

+Michael -- yes, it is lame. Easily forgotten.

I have to disagree - this song will be in my head for the next two weeks at least. 🥹🎵🎶

Gail Heideman (a studio vocalist) provided the singing voice for Patty in this one film - it's a pretty good vocal match to Duke's speaking voice -

Gail's singing really does sound like an extension of Patty's speaking.

What a bizarre song. Absolutely no melody. It's just random notes with no connection.

C'était dans le style jazzy français des années 60. C'est André Prévin et sa femme qui ont composé la chanson.

But it kinda matches Book Neely. She’s a very talented young woman but all over the place mentally, the lyrics match her uncertainty about herself as well. She’s headstrong in the film, but in the book (at least in the beginning), she’s shy and needs validation

It's the beads. They destroy the number.

The vocal range in this Dory Previn song is tuned so low that no pop vocalist could ever hope to stay on pitch. Even bringing it up by a third still doesn't get its lowest note out of the grave. Previn could sing this easily; most ingenues not so much. Patty Duke should have done her own singing, and she should have done a standard torch number, but whoever was at the helm of this shipwreck obviously had other (or simply NO) ideas,

So much better than her own singing, and it sounds so much like her.

So true. And Patty was always such a good sport about this film. And her singing too. She once famously said: "I can't sing and I've got four albums to PROVE it!" Gotta love her.

I like Patty Duke's real singing voice better. It would have been perfect if they did use her real singing voice

Amazing vocal match to Patty Duke. Duke was horribly miscast. The part of Neely calls for a warm vocalist who the public falls in love with. Duke comes across a strong young woman. The neediness simply doesn't show through.

Plus her movements are awkward and gawky. If this character was based on Judy Garland, they needed a natural born singing entertainer.

Agree that it was a great vocal match. It was decades before I even knew it WASN'T Patty Duke singing for herself! My older sister had several 45's and LP albums of Patty Duke's, and she was a "credible" singer. After reading the novel "Valley of the Dolls" I can't agree thought that Patty Duke was badly miscast. Jacqueline Susann portrays her as a fighter, clawing her way up to the top, but with a vulnerable side which comes out more and more as she sinks into drugs. Duke's performance I think pretty much captured that. Maybe she didn't garner quite enough sympathy with her portrayal...

Neely: "When a man won't do a scene, that's called integrity. When a woman won't do a scene, she's "temperamental."
