I really appreciate that you included measurements as well. That really helps me to follow along and setup my guitar. I was having difficulties but now I'm finally getting rid of the fret buzz
Very helpful video. I’m just starting to do my setups and I need all the (proper) help I can get without moving next door from you. You really know your stuff
I have been adjusting and setting up my own guitars pretty much since I started playing at 14 years old. My dad always did his own guitar work so it just ran in the family I guess? He pretty much made me figure things out myself with a little guidance from him, but not too much. Not to mention we lived in small town Oklahoma in the 70s so the closest guitar tech was in Muskogee Oklahoma about an hour away (yes, it’s the same Muskogee from the Merle Haggard song) so I couldn’t wait around for a trip to the music store in Muskogee just because I needed an adjustment on my strat. Really, really, glad my dad made it seem like that’s just part of being a guitarist. I’ve known so many through the years who couldn’t even change their own strings!?? Not to mention, no one cares for your guitar like you do!
Thanks for the video! My Les Paul had an annoying fret buzz issue and I don't have the tools to adjust my truss rod,so I adjusted my bridge and action with this video. Ended up with a Les Paul that now has a telecaster twang when unplugged and I love it.
I'm getting redundant but another great vid. This 3 part series is something I wish I'd seen 4 years ago....but then, Kris hadn't done it yet. Great info. Well presented.
My most feared bridge? The Fender floating trem! Oof, she's a fickle bridge, takes a long time to balance just right. And even small adjustments have a ripple effect on action, intonation, and tuning. But I think the challenge is totally worth it.
My best friend has an old Ibanez with a Floyd Rose and I offered to give it a go, so fretwork, setup, the works. I've never worked on a Floyd Rose before so I'm curious, yet confident to see how that'll turn out. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. That helped a lot. I was thinking about how to adjust the height as there is both the radius of the neck and the thickness of the strings to consider. Also giving exact millimeters helped greatly. I was having a string buzz on my thicker strings.
My most feared bridge to adjust and set up was the Floyd Rose. But once I installed one on my #1 guitar, that fear died. Now I'm confident in action, intonation, and spring adjustments on any Floyd Rose on any guitar.

Thx for this video! At 03:41 You said, one doesn't need a tool for adjusting. But on my guitar (a Yamaha Revstar) I cannot move those wheels with my fingers. They really don't want to move. What is "the trick"?
Hey , I have a Parker P42. I have a tunomatic bridge and I have my whole upper fret buzz, do I need to screw with the truss rod or with the bridge? And also if it is bridge , do i have to just adjust the side screws or the individual screws??
I've done a lot of things to floyd roses (because I didn't know to remove tension, the bridge literally fell off), but I think I know my way around one nowadays :)
Great video, thanks a lot! Just to make sure I got it right, when at 2:03 you suggest a 2mm space for the low E string, that corresponds to the distance from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the low E string? Am I correct?
Exactly! From top of the fret to the bottom of the string. That might feel too high, depending on the guitar and your personal taste. But it's a good starting point. Most important thing is that it has to feel right to you. :) //cheers, Kris
Question: What tool is being used to measure the string height at such small increments as tenths of a mm? 2.0; 1.9; 1.8; etc. I am a beginner at modding & setting up but have yet to find a tool that is capable of such small measurements.
Thanks for video , I have question Should I measure strings hight regards to 12 fret after applying capo in first fret ? The question by another way The strings hight that you said ( 2,....,1.5 mm ) should by measure with capo in first fret or without capo ?
I set up a decked bridge. The problem is that I can't screw in the whammy bar because it rubs against the body of the guitar when screwing in. Is it the fault of the tremolo bridge screws that regulate the height being screwed in too tightly? I had to set a higher pitch on the side of the treble strings to obtain the same bridge pressure
Seems like when I adjust the tune o'matic bridge and get the E's where I want them. the middle strings are too high. Will I ruin the fret files if filing the metal, or do I buy lower parts if available ?

Hello, my new American standard Stratocaster 2015 with two pivot screws bridge seems to have the bridge no parallel to the body..the shop put 10 high E gauge string and before it was 9. Now the treble side seems to be lower and in fact the sound of e b g is not beautiful( I had also a little G buzz solved with loosing truss-rod and getting higher saddle). IM scared; till now my classic vibe 50 squier Stratocaster sounds and plays better with more sparkle in 2 e 4 positions , and here in Italy costs 400 euro instead of American standard is 1600 euro. The American strat has the fat hot 50 pickup and they are very hot and powerful and the fender specs of pick up height should be change for them( not 2.4 mm bass and 2mm treble..but it needs to definitely lower the height ).this being said , according to you , should I work on the 2 lateral pivot screws to put the bridge parallel and should I raise a bit the bridge screw or should I work with springs opening the back of the guitar? Thanks
I just recieved a HB guitar with a tune-o-matic bridge and I adjusted the bridge, since the action was extremley high. I forgot to reduce the tension of the strings (detuning) while I did that and I have read that it can cause serious damage to the guitar. How do I know something like this happened? I haven't noticed any differnce yet (expect lower action ofc.)
You can damage the bridge by doing that, it happened to me while adjusting for the first time a Jazzmaster with a hardtail, I adjusted the saddles without loosing the strings and the screws marked the bridge, no big deal really but it is always a good practice to loose your strings whenever you adjust anything that would tighten them (truss rod tightening, raising string height, pulling saddles torwards the bridge while intonating)
Okei so i have this allen key, it fits in my Fender Player series fretless bass saddles, it also fits the saddle holes on the Squier Affinity Telecaster, but the same allen key is too big for my player series stratocaster... none of my small allen keys will fit in the saddle on my MIM strat, and i can't figure out why because Fender issued with the guitar a big and a smaller allen key, and the smaller one is... too big for my strat... so i tried 3 other small allen keys and none fit... what do i do now?
Would have been really helpful to explain how to set the radius on the strat bridge considering how much you talked about not having to adjust radius on other bridge types
If you use a ruler to measure the height of every string as in the video you will end up following the radius of the fretboard. Otherwise you can just eyeball it, you wont have an exact match anyway since the lower strings needs more space than the higher strings.
i have this lyon by washburn guitar (don’t roast me) no idea what the type of bridge is, but it’s impossible to adjust the action when the string is already through which sucks any advice?
What's up? On the lesPaul bridge don't you have to loosen the tension on the strings first and what if the strings are fine on the first few frets but high on the others?
Great vid as always ;) As a Tinkerer I have love/hate relationship with Fender type of bridges, as I can tweak them to infinity, hahaha :D After last video, I take meassurements on all my guitars and found out, that while I set them to feel the same, I set them all quite different. For example my Dot have much higher action and bigger neck relief to my Les Paul. On LP I have almost straight neck and very low action. Just for fun I take meassures and seted up the LP to be the same as the Dot. Bad decision, it feels unplayable :D Now I have to found out, what it was like before. Endless science of a Tinkerer :D :D :D
Good point! That's exactly why I don't believe in numbers and measurements. Haha! Every guitar feels different and you have to aim for the right feel. Not for numbers. That being said, using standard measurements can help to get an idea of what's "normal". You will change that to fit your expectations anyhow. Haha! //cheers, Kris
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses yes, having a reference point in seting up your guitar is very important, as starting from unknown can lead to endless tweaking without any success. What comes next is of course stress, aversion to food, sleeping dissorder, personal problem and maybe even broken guitar :D

Hi Kris, I just started following your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the public, it's very informative 👍🏻 May I ask if you can share any pointer about how to set up a Hipshot Tremsetter? Thanks in advance!
I messed the radius preset on my les paul and I cannot seem to fix it now. My dumb ass was trying to increase action a little bit more and i have touched every single bolt and now my guitar sounds so bad apart from power chords everything sounds kind of off. Idk what to do and there are no proper guitar tech in my area either please help me. But on the positive side this is making me play my telecaster a lot more than i used to.😂
a big problem for me is the intonation on my guitar, i got a really shitty one a while ago and when u got to 12th fret it was not quite a full note off. i need to replace strings on my new guitar vut im worried ill mess that bit up. any advice?
The problem I always have is that when I lower the action the grub screw heads protrude which is uncomfortable on the palm. There are several solutions. Fit a shim which is a fiddle, stick some tape over the heads but this is messy, or replace the grub screws with shorter screws. I have measured the screw thread diameter and it seems to be 2.5 mm but 3 mm appears to be the standard. Which is It? :( Thanks.
Thomas Hill you can adjust them without drinking the strings, unless you need to raise them way up high. Then it’s better drinking the string a little before you break it. //cheers, Kris
hi, how can i make this kind of bridge to stay flat to the body? i just cant seem to do it, it's driving me kinda crazy because i don't use a floating bridge
your videos are perfect, I do a lot with my guitars myself but have some gaps in knowledge and would go by feel but having someone explain things in details make things so much clear and it removes some guess work, thank you and thank you extra for using metric system :D
Hi, I have the same type string action gauge as you have in the video but as I see there's a 1.75 mm and a 2.00 mm measurements but I don't see the measurements between them, for instance, you said that A string should be 1.9 but there isn't marker on the gauge for 1.9 mm. I just want to know how you did it.
Hello sir, I want to ask you, can any electric guitar get lower action. I've bought a cheap electric guitar (Juarez) few months ago and no guitar technician is ready to adjust its action, they are saying "this guitar can not get low action its a cheap guitar."
wish i watched this before destroying my stud 😂 they are pain in the ass to find when you have jo idea anything about floyd rose lol but i found em finaly and waiting them to arrive
well so many questions are not talked about. like my floyd is at it's lowest and the action is to high so now what?? I have done everything that could be done. the neck is straight floyd is straight etc... I have shimmed the neck a lot. still to high. my question is can the floyd post be lower some how or do I just get rid of the guitar? can the hole floyd be brought down? it's new on an 80's or 90's Charvel. I am at a lost. sorry for bad spelling, I'm french. ahh never mind I'm gonna sell it. I'm sick of it. what guitar have the more bridge lowering possible for low action?? that's the guitar I want. because low action is keyyyy I know now because my old Kramer has low frets and super low action with zero fret buzz and the playing is so easy it's crazy amazing. brings your playing next level. I want other guitars like that but not same brands.
Hey, most probably it's the string action, yes. You should also check the neck relief if it's not too straight (watch the first episode of Guitar Tech Tips where I show how that's done). Cheers and good luck! //Kris
If it's a slight adjustment, not really. If you have to go way down or up with the saddles, yes. Luckily we have an episode on intonation setup too: ua-cam.com/video/77NGb0rg8cI/v-deo.html Cheers! //Kris
Seems to me that 1.5mm on the high E us much too high... I always go between 2mm to 1.5mm on low E down to 1mm or lower on the low E. My perfect set up in the telecaster I built is 1.5mm Low E and 0.5mm high E string. I built a compounded radius that goes from 14 to 16inch, and the high E can be bent three half steps without fretting out. I do lose a light bit of sustain when bent three half steps, but I usually don't so I'm happy with that very low action. To get everything as low as possible, I adjusted the neck angle using shims I designed and printed, then adjusted the neck (some people like it with a lot of relief, I tend to go for a flat neck) and nut adjustment as low as it will go with around 0.1mm between the strings and the fret when a capo is at the 3rd fret.
hey, i’m having issues with my D string in particular, as whenever i tune my guitar to standard tuning, whenever i play higher up the fretboard it sounds very flat. can i fix this myself?
My fender strat hava problam..how to recover it sir...my problem is 1st strings label is soo minimum label to other strings...I want to get high label to other strings...because indian culture..that is very effective so please get a video..sir to get high label to other strings
Richard Turner What’s best? An old Porsche or a modern one? There’s no right or wrong, just different tastes. I prefer 6 point trems, if they’re of high quality (like ABM). Most modern players would prefer the 2 point bridges. 🤷♂️ It’s all good. //cheers, Kris
I hope you don’t adjust your saddles while the bridge is floating without blocking it into position ! You have to readjust the springs after every saddles height adjustment.
Can anyone point me to a video that fixes me problem. Electric guitar. On the A,D,G,B strings. When I fret the 17th, it definitely hits the 18th. Only on those 4 strings and only on that one fret, everywhere else is.. good enough. I say good enough because I've never changed any settings, its a cheaper guitar (Epiphone SG, almost 20 years old now), and there is nothing noticeable about other strings/frets. My frets aren't loose and don't look to be higher than others(just eyeballin). Where to start with small adjustments is what I'd like. Thanks anyone that answers.
First use a fret rocker or something small and straight like a razor blade to check the height of the 18th fret relative to the 17th & 19th. If that's definitely a high point, tape off the fret or use one of those metal fingerboard protectors with one fret slot cut out of it, slowly sand the high fret with 320 paper. Keep checking while you do the sanding until the 18th fret rings clear. Polish with 000 and then 0000 steel wool.
Unfortunately I'm much better at working on guitars then playing them. It saves me money and frustration, but doesn't get me any girls:( The real problem is when you set the string height and it's still buzzing, so I go up 1/4 turn at a time...adjust/tune/check for buzz. If we keep slowly adjusting up and get to the point where there's no fret buzz and the strings are at or above 7/64 , or about 2.8mm, that's when the real problems need to be solved. Truss rod adjustment should've been made prior to adjusting steering height so the next steps...I think...are fret leveling, and check..if not then we go to neck angle adjustment. Hopefully you don't have a set neck at this point! Also it's good to sight your neck to try to figure out if it's straight to the eye. I had two Tele's in a row with crooked necks, what a pain in the neck! So ya, making a video showing the process of neck angle adjustment would be good!
Hey, it's really hard to help without having your guitar in my hands but let's try it. First setup the truss rod as good as you can. Here's how to: ua-cam.com/video/1kEiYJ1kvIM/v-deo.html Then check the setup of the floating bridge. Here's how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/2BD6q5Ou96E/v-deo.html If you still have fret buzz please check the frets: Video 1:ua-cam.com/video/FX7mobruWHI/v-deo.html Video 2: ua-cam.com/video/ZcNdTzC3y3Q/v-deo.html Hope that helps you! Hey, I'd say a 3mm action on the low E and 2mm on the high E are pretty high already. That's gonna give you an action where you really have to grab those strings to make them sing. :) Cheers //Kris

Good point! That's exactly why I don't believe in numbers and measurements. Haha! Every guitar feels different and you have to aim for the right feel. Not for numbers. That being said, using standard measurements can help to get an idea of what's "normal". You will change that to fit your expectations anyhow. Haha!

@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses yes, having a reference point in seting up your guitar is very important, as starting from unknown can lead to endless tweaking without any success. What comes next is of course stress, aversion to food, sleeping dissorder, personal problem and maybe even broken guitar :D
my guitar action is so high its IBANEZ GSA60 and when i connect to my amp and try to play it my guitar voice distort so much without distortion you cant play lead because its bad like voice is just please help me idk what to do
thank you very much for the video sir.
Hi Kris, I just started following your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the public, it's very informative 👍🏻
May I ask if you can share any pointer about how to set up a Hipshot Tremsetter?
Thanks in advance!
I already adjust the post without string release, Any suggestions sir?
:( Thanks.
Great video! Question: Do you detune the string before adjusting the saddle height or can It be done with the string up to pitch? Thanks Chris😁
I changed the strings on my guitar getting fret buzz now on Low e and a,any ideas?
On my strat plus I needed to raise the whole bridge by unscrewing the 2 pivot screws a few turns. Bad idea?
your videos are perfect, I do a lot with my guitars myself but have some gaps in knowledge and would go by feel but having someone explain things in details make things so much clear and it removes some guess work, thank you and thank you extra for using metric system :D
I use radius ruler to adjust the string height. much faster!
That's a great way of doing it! I just want to avoid using too many special tools in this series.

What are the setings on the amp? the sound was real sweet.
Ideally, should neck relief be removed before setting string height?
I guess i have to raise my high string, because it doesn’t make any sound when i play a note higher on the fret board
Hey, most probably it's the string action, yes. You should also check the neck relief if it's not too straight (watch the first episode of Guitar Tech Tips where I show how that's done). Cheers and good luck! //Kris
Thx for this!
how much mm is for the bridge allen key ??
When you adjust, will it ruin the intonation?
If it's a slight adjustment, not really. If you have to go way down or up with the saddles, yes. Luckily we have an episode on intonation setup too: ua-cam.com/video/77NGb0rg8cI/v-deo.html
Cheers!
Super easy fix, look up "guitar intonation"
@@ericb.1384 thanks man, all sorted now
That's good to hear! I hope you found our episode on intonation setups. :) Cheers! //Kris
what are the screws at the back of the bridge for?
Intonation, dont mess w that, thank me later
My fender strat hava problam..how to recover it sir...my problem is 1st strings label is soo minimum label to other strings...I want to get high label to other strings...because indian culture..that is very effective so please get a video..sir to get high label to other strings
What’s the best Strat bridge 2 point or 6 point? Thanks.
Richard Turner What’s best? An old Porsche or a modern one? There’s no right or wrong, just different tastes. I prefer 6 point trems, if they’re of high quality (like ABM). Most modern players would prefer the 2 point bridges. 🤷♂️ It’s all good.

Thomann's Guitars & Basses Thankyou. 👍
I hope you don’t adjust your saddles while the bridge is floating without blocking it into position ! You have to readjust the springs after every saddles height adjustment.
Please give that guy some time to improve! It's just some thousands of guitars he fucked up by doing setup for his customers. 😂
thank you!
Polish with 000 and then 0000 steel wool.
whaT about moving forward and closer
That strat L key gauge number please
country funk !!!
Neck, nut, bridge. Which is first: the chicken or the egg?
Choking and fret buzz , floating bridge, cant dive bomb, always out of tune, i hope you help, thanks
Hey, it's really hard to help without having your guitar in my hands but let's try it.
First setup the truss rod as good as you can. Here's how to: ua-cam.com/video/1kEiYJ1kvIM/v-deo.html
Then check the setup of the floating bridge. Here's how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/2BD6q5Ou96E/v-deo.html
If you still have fret buzz please check the frets: Video 1:ua-cam.com/video/FX7mobruWHI/v-deo.html Video 2: ua-cam.com/video/ZcNdTzC3y3Q/v-deo.html
Hope that helps you! Cheers //Kris
fret buzz on my low e
My Danelectro's bridge looks nothing like these 😳
How tf can you follow the radius if the strings height is 2mm at low e and 1.5mm at high e.... contradictory information.
Strat vuntagebridge
super
Next step, adjust the tremolo on the strat
Sir .. please give me high action number
Hey, I'd say a 3mm action on the low E and 2mm on the high E are pretty high already. That's gonna give you an action where you really have to grab those strings to make them sing. :) Cheers //Kris
