Hersey Hawkins: Highest scoring average in the NCAA to NBA role player | Forgotten Player Profiles

  • Hersey Hawkins finished his senior season at Bradley with the highest scoring average in NCAA history before going to the NBA as the best scorer in the draft, but he would surprisingly pave out an NBA career as a complimentary role player to stars such as Charles Barkley, Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton. Hawkins played his role perfectly on every team he was a part of and always found his offense within the flow of the game. Hawkins played a smooth game and was renowned for his sportsmanship. It's a shame Hawkins is never talked about as one of the best scorers, because being the team's top scorer was never really asked of him, but if the team needed it, he could go get it.

Always going to remember him as the sharp shooting guard for 1996 Seattle Supersonics. 😂 He was a marksman. That team was amazing too.

That team got cheated out of a ring. And now the city got cheated out of a team. That 1996 team was one of the most fun, underrated teams I have ever seen.

I'm being totally serious: It wasn't until 2022 (when I was 49), that I first saw footage of a Hersey Hawkins DUNK! It was his draft day footage. In THIS video, I saw MORE Hersey Hawkins dunks, than ever ever before!

Hersey Hawkins-- My goodness a largely forgotten consistent player in the NBA, but not forgotten in my memory as a Seattle Supersonic in the 1996 NBA finals! Seattle fell short against Hersey's home town team in the Chicago Bulls. Indeed Hersey was underrated and played his heart out in the NBA! Thanks for this UA-cam video on Hersey Hawkins!!!

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. 1993-94 was one of the BEST years of my life, and 1996 was pretty special, too. I was SO pumped when the Sonics traded for Kendall Gill, "a budding Michael Jordan." Since 1991, I HAVE always liked Hersey Hawkins' game, with his 3-point shooting. In the summer of 1995, after I traded Kendall Gill for Hersey Hawkins, I shot 100 Hersey Hawkins free-throws in the gym. They kept going in, and I wound up making 86/100 Hersey Hawkins free-throws. When I'd shoot Hersey Hawkins 3-pointers, it felt so natural. In fact, even at 50 in 2023, I shoot like Hawkins during shootaround, and my shots go in! In 1995-96, Hersey Hawkins was SO perfect for the Sonics. What we lacked, was a 2 Guard, who could hit the three-pointer, and that's exactly what Hawkins was. Also, there were several attitude problems on that Sonics team, and Hawkins was like Nate McMillan and Sam Perkins, guys who could get along with ANY coach, and most teammates. My Dad unexpectedly passed away in 2003, and life hasn't been happy for me ever since. I had long thought, even in happy 1996, that I'd live to be 48, and pass away in 2021. If I'm indeed in the final months of my life, these 1990s Sonics highlights are what I will cherish, during these final months of my life.

13:20 Thank YOU!! I'm totally serious: I wanted a HORNETS 33 HAWKINS jersey, from that dotage 2000-01 season. I wondered what number he wore. I read that it was 33, but I wasn't sure, as he wore 32 and 3 in his earlier stint (of course, it's because Alonzo Mourning had 33). I had to take a gamble, look up images of Hawkins from 2000-01 (rare, as he was a bit player by then), but THIS confirms that he was indeed 33, in 2000-01, when he was in his dotage.

GREAT job on the video, didn't know anything about Hawkins high-school and college career,he was a-BEAST !!!! Had to watch it twice, enjoyed it both times.I watched him play at the old SPECTRUM in Philly,he was a tough and good, nba player. When Barkley wanted to win an nba title and be traded,he'd bash the entire team, said they had bad players on his own team.Of course this pissed them off, including Hawkins !!! Barkley started acting up/out to get traded,he said there a quota for white players on the 76ers team,to keep the white fans happy. OUCH.His own words. Finally Harold Katz had enough of Barkley's stupidity and he got his wish for a trade. And we all know he went to Phoenix.

We had Bradley season tickets, so got to see most of his home games! The excitement of those seasons were amazing! The civic center was always sold out. It was a BIG part of growing up. I am still a BU fan and go to most of their games. Hersey Hawkins and Jim Les were a good pair, led to some amazing comeback games. Hersey was a class act! He was at the last home game, I was glad to hear he has been married for the last 26 yrs. He looked good and happy, so I hope he has a very good life. Read one of his kids is very good at BB, in the development league, so mayb will make it to the NBA too. GO BU!!

@@BMars-yi8ndI could do that one. National player of the year. Wore a big ass knee brace but didn't need it. Drafted by the Spurs. Got there the same year as David Robinson. Traded to Detroit for Rodman. Got to Detroit & forgot how to play basketball. Traded to Houston for Robert Horry but Sean Elliott failed his physical so the trade was voided. Horry becomes Big Shot Bob after that failed trade. Should've been 1995 Finals MVP. Wins 7 championships. Elliott was reacquired by the Spurs for the 1995 season. Remembered how to play basketball. Wins a chip in a 50 game lockout season. He's a Pushy. The End

Yeah,I was living in Philly during these times and MJ would average 38 points a game against the 76ers at Philly.Attended most of the Philly home games against the Bulls ( had a friend who worked there get me GOOD seats/tickets )this was when they still had the pld SPECTRUM arena. LOL.Playoff tickets were TOO hard to get ( and TOO exspensive for me ) LOL.Hawkins did a good job of cutting off MJ's drives, but,he'd just shoot over Hawkins. And I do remember when Mahorn and Barkley played together also. Those were good times in Philly, but,I left in 1995 to go join the army. GO-ARMY !!! LOL.
