Honestly, the most important Beelz tip is #6, which appears at about 3:37 in the video. Explicitly, playing this game is all about memorizing enemy attack patterns. Skul is the lightest of roguelites, in the sense that your action-combat skills are waaaaaay more important to your overall success than build, money, or good RNG. The game tempts you to try to tank damage and just kill everything quickly via a broken, super strong build, but in actuality, you should just play it the legit way and learn to dodge. I remember when I first started playing the game. I thought that there had to be a way to kill the pink trees (i.e. Blossom Ent) before their initial spore attack is released. It turns out that in most cases this is not possible. One simply has to be a bit patient, approach them, trigger their attack, quickly run away, then re-approach them when the coast is clear. Another example is the second boss, the Leiana Sisters fight. This is when the game's difficulty ramps up by a million. Suddenly you have to take on two fast-moving enemies with a myriad of tricky attacks for which the dodging strategy is not immediately obvious. You can't just jump/dash reflexively. Instead, you have to develop an inner monologue like..."Ok, I stand in the middle of the screen and jump at just the right moment...Ok, now I find a safe spot....Ok, now I have to jump at just the right moment and dash over this wave....".
Agreed. The games difficulty spiking up for the Second Boss fight is very deliberate it seems. This way players have enough room to earn some quartz, experience Act 2 and obtain soooome power via items/skulls. But the real test here is their ability to dodge and choose opportune times to go for damage. It's a patience fight, even though I try to force it lol. This kind of fight helps a lot when preparing for the upcoming Act 3 and 4 areas.
Just now played the game this weekend, and I learned that second boss fight the hard way. I only beat it the first time because I had destroyer, but I played it much more patiently the next time with base petty thief and felt pretty good about it lol
There have been some whispers here and there about making a more transparent menu that would give a brief description of what Your active buffs mean, as well as a compendium that would show all the skull (with their upgrades) You have stumbled upon so far, their respective skills (in upgraded and unupgraded form), enemies and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, i believe that so far these have only been some fan ideas and there was no confirmation from the devs stating that they plan on adding it. BUT! It's highly possible they might include such thing in a future update since and we may hear about all those plans when they post a roadmap for 2022
I've been following you for a while and back when I found you videos like this helped me to beat the game for the first time and get better! Keep up your awsome work
I've always watched you videos and now that Skul is on PS+ I've been showing some to my brother. Roguelites aren't usually my thing but I'm giving it a try, rookie mode really helped because I kept dying at the first mini boss especially the ninja now I can consistently get up to the sisters. Just learning the ropes for now and your vids really help
Picked this one up, it's so good. Bloody hard though. Gameplay really reminds me of Blade assault, and that's really a good thing. This new style of mental action based side scrolling roguelike is perfect. I prefer this style over the bullet hell ones TBH.
I would have quite liked to have these tips the first time I played Skul, 249 deaths and did not complete the game, however I ended up resetting the information and finished it thanks to everything known, incidentally my build was -The Prisoner (The King) -Sword-Skull (Never improve it) -Shadow Knights -Bowmaster's bow -Hope Slasher -Execution Ax -Pot of Greed -Master Fighter -Giant's Ax -Solar Sword -Double Kirion (thanks to the Slime and the elimination of the Thief Armor) It was the build that made me win and the one I've had the most luck in.
It would be really dope if they add a sandbox or custom mode, like dead cells, so you are not cheating if you don't want to, you just can choose what to take out of the game and what to keep in and how to balance coin and health drops, it'd be really cool if that were to happen as I am not great at the game and also would like to try some more of the legendary and rare skuls, just be neat to play in a bit more of a cheaty way. And then for people who want more of a challenge there would be hard mode modifiers in it as well
the devs want to put out a hard mode in Q1 of 2022 but there's no news about a sandbox mode. Having said that, i think a lot of community members are asking about some sort of testing grounds area or a compendium so they might include it in some future update. If they do, i'm sure they're going to announce it in a future devlog or a roadmap ^^
@@Jpeg_skeleton exactly, lock it behind the first win and then it's just a fun gamemode where you csn add a million enemies to onw room and have whatever skull and abilities at whatever level for the run that you want
Hi Beelz! Just recently picked this up for the Switch and framerate issues aside, I absolutely LOVE this game! I have a quick question for you. What does the icon shown next to the rookie icon mean? I can't seem to find any answer anywhere 😕
Glad you're enjoying dude! That icon is the buff for a second life. So if you've got the Witch Trait unlocked for your second life that buff shows you that you still have it. Once you ''die'' and go to second life it disappears.
I picked this game up 2 days ago and I can't stop playing it I've stayed up all night grinding this game, reminds me of the binding of Isaac just a tad
Items, that, fx, make normal attacks deal an additional 10 damage can be stacked so each normal attack deals 10 true damage twice. This can be very very powerful.
I just bought Skul after watching a video by SleepingBear. I haven’t played it yet. I’m so excited to start it. Anyone who makes a Skul Tips video has my respect. Big Ups!
Lol, started playing this game a week ago and I decided to do something different. I tried to go through the levels with just Skul, and wow, did I get far. I think all those skull power ups convince me that I am all powerful which led me to die a bunch, but knowing that Skul isn’t all that powerful, I relied more heavily on patience and timing. Now, I always try my best to keep Skul for as long as possible during runs ✨
One Touch id like to add for power skulls is the dash rule doesn’t apply to gene, their unique dash is teleporting twice and their upgraded forms cause a blue mimic to appear where you start the dash that then attacks once and vanishes
i had a skul run up until the second form of the final boss damn was it fun to fly above his head raining magic necklace fireballs and mana bone storms
An odd little glitch on console, the big chargers lack their tell for shoulder dashing, but still make their grunts right before they strike. Until they fix this, keep enemy audio high enough to be noticed it you’re a console player like myself.
The first non-mandatory skull I ever found was Arch Lich. And then I found out how it only takes 1 button press to switch with the headless in the shop where I had expllected there to be a menu with extra info about the skull and a confirm button after pressing the button once... I got to the bossfight where there is just 1 extra strong hero with purple/magenta/salmon/pink/whatever background on my 16th run though (using unique alchemist with nitrogen). That was also the first run I ever beat yggdrasil. I unlocked 3 npcs in 1 run. I got to the same point in I think my 34th run, but only using Skul. edit: On xbox. edit2: This does make what I did less impressive, but I genuinely forgot to mention it before. I am not sure when I started using rookie mode, but it was definitely active during my 34th run. Not sure if it was on during my 16th run though. I don't think it was. I died on my first rookie mode run, cause the first room was about sneakily sabotaging machines. I definitely did a few runs a while ago when I first downloaded the game. I think 12 runs or so. That leaves very few runs, where I could have the chance to learn of the existance of rookie mode. On the 16th run, I was very very cautious (it took me >2 hours to get to the room where I died), so I was definitely still very rusty, and not that good even if I hadn't been rusty. When I turned on rookie mode, I started to improove rapidly, cause it gave me more room to experiment and it gave me more chaces to fail and learn. Idk.
That's entirely up to you and what you like using. I don't like Yaksha so I typically destroy it whenever I find it despite him being a Legendary. However Archlich and Reaper I do like so I keep them.
A think, that would help me a lot is knowing how the hitboxes work in this game. Both where everyone can recieve damage and the area everyone can deal damage in. edit: Especially skul, large enemies's attacks, and most of the ememy projectiles, that don't move in a straight line at a constant speed.
i'm wondering though, how do you record your gameplay ? i tried recording with windows it's built in screen recorder but it records a lower frame rate than the game is running on.
I use OBS for all my recording. It's free but will require some time to set everything up so it captures what you want in the right way. Lots of online guides that cater to different needs.
Is there a downside on the Rookie mode ? like not getting one kind of currency ? I'd assume you wouldn't earn Quartz in Rookie mode, or something like that
ok, so i don't understand if i upgrade a skull, do i get it from the fox too, or I'm wasting time upgrading them ? Was thinking that the basic ones you upgrade may turn up as a drop from the fox.
Upgrading your skulls is just a form of powerup for the run, like the items you collect, everything resets after. Similar to getting Brutality etc in Dead Cells. It's just a powerup for those chosen skulls. Think of it like, you have a Sword, and during the run you upgrade it to +4. But at the end of the run you win, yay it's over. And if you find a sword again you need to power it up during the run.
@@Beelz55 I find it a bit annoying, i expected it to be able to lvl them up and keep them. Like the post run progression in this game is a bit lacking compared to Dead Cells. I wanted something exciting to look forward to when I do another run.
For me by far the biggest problem is how many buttons there are. Jump, Attack, okay. Dash? Already it's getting tricky. Consumable item? Oh man I have to remember to use that. And then you throw in two more active abilities? So now my fingers really have to move around a lot instead of just staying on one button? And THEN space bar, for changing into a whole different Skull with its own abilities? It's just A LOT, really hard for me to get a hang of it. So I skip consumable items, build more passive items, and go for Skuls with just one ability to make it simpler. I don't like dashing at all Can't count the number of times I reflexively spam Space to jump but then I turn into a different Skull and get confused. Soo many buttons, it's like playing a rythm game on a keyboard
I just started the game and noticed when i respawn, i always respawn as little skul. how do I make it so i respawn as one of the skulls ive found? is that possible? thanks!
It isn't. Skul himself is the default character. You can ask the Fox NPC to give you up to 2 skulls to begin a run, otherwise you've gotta find them during your runs. Once you make it to the Dark Mirror you can unluck a machine that lets you select ones you want.
Nah, it's all just RNG. You can get 2 starters from the Fox at the beginning but it's something like a 90% chance to get a Common and 10% for a Rare. He can't give anything higher than that. So Uniques and Legendaries have to be found in the run. Once you've unlocked a high enough tier of hard mode you can choose which skulls you want out of Common and Rare.
have to say even with rookie mode turned on this game is no cakewalk i'm not raging just wanna say that i think this is not a broken as i thought it would be
Enemies in that Act can leave a debuff on you. It stacks an ''increased damage taken'' effect. You'll also notice a black fog effect around the border of your screen. Normal enemy hits can do it, the large statues that pulse a yellow aura do it and the candlestick guys who throw small projectiles at you are doing it. The fountains will cleanse this debuff off of you.
Triangle/Y on controller. I forget the prompt on keyboard. Pick it up and you have it. Check your inventory and it should be there. You don't physically hold items, they have effects that they provide for you. Skulls play how they play, similar to a Hero or Character on their own.
None whatsoever. The only difference is you take 50% less damage. It's a good way to learn the game and you can turn it off/on whenever you want during a run. You can keep it on forever or turn it off when you're ready for a challenge. Thanks to the fact the game doesn't actually change based on difficulty you'll be learning everything normally. Just with a magical ''take 50% less damage'' buff.
Devs have said mid-October is their goal. So very soon if that's the goal. Late October at worst. There's a chance it could be November if problems occur.
I have a question mr. Beelzy Wheelzy, how come You are so great? *insert beelzCute emote* UwU (i'm so sorry) Thank You for the tips mate, hope You're doing alright ^^
Also damn son I can’t speak in your streams anymore cause I’m on mobile and can’t change setting still do get on when I can but silent unless I use chunks
A few ways: The shop can sell them (upper right NPC). Not always there but as the run progresses they're more common Special rooms offering Quintessence rewards Boss drops Adventurer fights always offer one amongst the rewards
As you play you'll earn Dark Quartz, the purple gems in the bottom right. Use those with the Witch NPC to unlock permanent upgrades and continue doing runs. With practice you'll get by the first boss and can advance
It's scheduled to release in October this year to my knowledge, but it can be postponed till early November. For now, keep on the lookout during the upcoming couple of weeks ^^
Ghosty has already answered this but I thought I would add the actual dev blog where they announce this and reveal some more future plans: store.steampowered.com/news/app/1147560/view/2894116176552273243

I don't like dashing at all
Can't count the number of times I reflexively spam Space to jump but then I turn into a different Skull and get confused.
Champion Magic Run with Mage Circlet Spam Parry When?
You say it like one can just run into parry champion. But yeah Mage's Necklace Champion is deadass busted.
I just beat the game for the first time!!!
❤Nice Tips you give me thanks
How do you save in this game ????? I can't figure it out
Everything saves automatically.
thanks !!!
Sometimes I randomly heal to full. How does that happen? Maybe it has to deal with a weird green effect?
I know this is mad late but is there something that’s makes you luckier on your starter skulls?
Nah, it's all just RNG. You can get 2 starters from the Fox at the beginning but it's something like a 90% chance to get a Common and 10% for a Rare. He can't give anything higher than that. So Uniques and Legendaries have to be found in the run.
Once you've unlocked a high enough tier of hard mode you can choose which skulls you want out of Common and Rare.
@@Beelz55 alright thanks👍
@@Beelz55 also what’s the best common to use
@@Thebatwhogotwhitesplashes Depends what you wanna do. A lot are good. Pike and Werewolf might be stronger though.
@@Beelz55 I finally beat the game my first time with warlock and pike but the ending got me feeling like a way
So one thing I'm wanting to know are skull upgrades permanent or not?
Yes thank you for the video
bruh i didnt even know about the room difference i just thought it was random lol
I keep getting to Joan of arc 2 but she is so difficult
Skul is the only 2d platform im liking, for example i didnt like hollow night, or cell (maybe too difficult for me but this is more fun)
have to say even with rookie mode turned on this game is no cakewalk
i'm not raging just wanna say that i think this is not a broken as i thought it would be
I started playing a week ago
What does the fountains do in level 3?
Enemies in that Act can leave a debuff on you. It stacks an ''increased damage taken'' effect. You'll also notice a black fog effect around the border of your screen. Normal enemy hits can do it, the large statues that pulse a yellow aura do it and the candlestick guys who throw small projectiles at you are doing it. The fountains will cleanse this debuff off of you.
i just got through my 6th or 7th run, and i accidentally swapped a legendary archlich skull for a random common 😭
should’ve watched this video earlier
Hey so do i lose the arachne upgrades after i die?
I just want to know what’s the differences of the domains
Domains? Not sure I'm aware of what you mean. The little statue things that buff enemies and you (if you break them) ?
@@Beelz55 gates or those portals when you go to a new area
@@Beelz55 OK though I figured it out after a few hours of playing the game after I download it since last night
I was playing yesterday and I got the berserker skull and then in the shop I accidentally gave it away
Bro how do I equip items, cause I can’t find a way to equip the sword
Triangle/Y on controller. I forget the prompt on keyboard. Pick it up and you have it. Check your inventory and it should be there. You don't physically hold items, they have effects that they provide for you. Skulls play how they play, similar to a Hero or Character on their own.
I lagh my ass of because of that "Pathetic"
Is there a penalty to picking rookie mode?
None whatsoever. The only difference is you take 50% less damage. It's a good way to learn the game and you can turn it off/on whenever you want during a run. You can keep it on forever or turn it off when you're ready for a challenge. Thanks to the fact the game doesn't actually change based on difficulty you'll be learning everything normally. Just with a magical ''take 50% less damage'' buff.
@@Beelz55 thanks for replying! Great content, keep it up!
When is the console release happening?
Devs have said mid-October is their goal. So very soon if that's the goal. Late October at worst. There's a chance it could be November if problems occur.
tbh this game is hard ealy game ;(
I have a question mr. Beelzy Wheelzy, how come You are so great? *insert beelzCute emote* UwU (i'm so sorry)
Thank You for the tips mate, hope You're doing alright ^^
ohhhh a tips guide ❤️❤️❤️
Wait wait wait we need a fresh new game run to see how far you can get

✨Engagement✨
Hey beelz, hoy are YOU today?
Not bad dude!
4:22 lol I got all of those items and let me tell you i beat the whole game first try (befora that run i only beat the first 3 bosses)
BEEEEEEELZ
How do you get quintessence
A few ways:
The shop can sell them (upper right NPC). Not always there but as the run progresses they're more common
Special rooms offering Quintessence rewards
Boss drops
Adventurer fights always offer one amongst the rewards
What am i supposed to do I’m in the loop of dying and not getting passed the first boss I’m so confused
As you play you'll earn Dark Quartz, the purple gems in the bottom right. Use those with the Witch NPC to unlock permanent upgrades and continue doing runs. With practice you'll get by the first boss and can advance
Nice
does anyone know when the game releases for console? as far as i know they are already late for summer 2021
It's scheduled to release in October this year to my knowledge, but it can be postponed till early November. For now, keep on the lookout during the upcoming couple of weeks ^^
@@sirghosty3429 don’t worrry
