12 years ago Billy MacKenzie took his own life,a combination of self disbelife, depression and heartbreak at the loss of his mother. Unknown to many Billy along with the Associates made some of the finest songs to come out of Scotland.Very well respected by other artists and much missed by those who knew him. Tonight I raise a glass and light a candle in his memory as I sit here listening to the music be blessed us with. R.I.P The Voice of Velvet forever Groovin' with Mr.MacKenzie
This song is so brilliant. I just lost one of my best friends and this is basically exactly how I feel. Hadn't listened to it in ages, but it is so spot-on. I miss you so much...
Lost my best friend to cancer. He was barely 17. I miss him so much. Lost my brother to leukemia when he was 23. I cry when I hear this song and I keep coming back for more lol
A beautiful song always performed with lots of emotion by Robert Smith. This song (for those who don't know) is about the death of 'The Associates' singer Billy McKenzie who committed suicide in 1997 and the regret Robert Smith felt for not giving him some time after meeting him backstage at a gig. Sad…
I have a friend who is named Omar. He was a Cure fan as well. One night I came home sick (I worked third shift) to my apartment and my roommate was having a party that was winding down. Omar was there and very drunk. He was very annoying when he was drunk sometimes. He asked me for a ride home and I told him no, I was sick and going to bed. Everyone else was crashing so I told him to do the same. He asked over and over again but I always refused. He said fine, he would walk home. It had to be 15 miles away. I said "fine...go". He did. After a minute or so I had second thoughts and went out onto the deck. I saw him walking down the road and I was ready to yell to him to hold on.....but I did not. I figured he would come back and if not then he was a fool. I went to bed. In the morning two sheriff deputies knocked on our door and asked if we knew an Omar Tello? Omar walked to the end of that road. Walked to an overpass over the highway about 1 minute further down the road and jumped. He was found on the side of the highway. The deputies found something in his pocked with our address on it. This song makes me miss him. Its been over twenty years now but I still think of him daily. No one understands the guilt I feel and it is just as strong today as then. I am sorry Omar. I miss u buddy. Please forgive me.
Oh man..i dont know you...but i am sorry...i know how you feel...but the more important is not the No you gave to him...but the love you care still about him...i am so sorry about that..get over!
The song is really about an old friend that time was taken for granted and was then lost. Never take time for granted. Life is short. Make the time for your true friends.
The song was written for Billy MacKenzie of the Associates. After a Cure concert, Billy tried to talk to Robert, but Robert was busy with other things and didn’t get the chance. 3 weeks later Billy committed suicide leaving Robert with a permanent regret. beautiful lyrics .
I rarely can listen to this song and not feel any regrets for things that I should have done in the past and I haven't, it's a beautiful song but also very sad for those who didn't do the right thing at the right moment, it's like a beautiful slap at your face actually
That was deliberate, Rob thought at the time of writing that this would be the last Cure song that he ever wrote, so he thought of it as a kind of eulogy for the band. Luckily though, he changed his mind!

Find your true friends. And hold them close. Because this ride we are on.... It only gets faster. And faster. And faster. So fast you can hardly believe it.
Forget that this group have always been there through 35 years and still different than all the modern crap 👍🏻 keep it up you may geta knighthood Robert lol🎼
This song is about seeing his friend Billy Mackenzie and blowing him off. Billy committed suicide in 1997. This song is his Im sorry to billy. thats why he says too much rush to talk to billy.
"So we meet again!" and I offer my hand All dry and English slow And you look at me and I understand Yeah it's a look I used to know "Three long years and your favorite man Is that any way to say hello?" And you hold me like you'll never let me go "Oh c'mon and and have a drink with me Sit down and talk a while..." "Oh I wish I could and I will! But now I just don't have the time" And over my shoulder as I walk away I see you give that look goodbye I still see that look in your eye So dizzy Mr Busy, too much rush to talk to Billy All the silly frilly things have to first get done In a minute sometime soon, maybe next time, make it June Until later doesn't always come It's so hard to think "It ends sometime And this could be the last I should really hear you sing again And I should really watch you dance" Because it's hard to think "I'll never get another chance To hold you to hold you" But chilly Mr Dilly, too much rush to talk to Billy All the tizzy fizzy idiot things must get done In a second, just hang on, all in good time, won't be long Until later I should've stopped to think, I should've made the time I could've had that drink, I could've talked a while I would've done it right, I would've moved us on But I didn't, now it's all too late It's over, over And you're gone I miss you, I miss you, I miss you I miss you, I miss you, I miss you so much But how how many times can I walk away and wish "If only" But how many times can I talk this way and wish "If only" Keep on making the same mistake Keep on aching the same heartbreak I wish "If only" But "If only" Is a wish too late

This song and A Letter to Elise are my favorite The Cure songs. Both songs are so heartbreakingly beautiful.
Go and listen to the song Trust from the edge of the deep green sea Untitled

This song breaks my heart. I would have had a much happier life if I hadn't made that mistake ... and then again ... and again ... and again.
It's about suicide

It must be something that hurts a lot.
I wish I had the right words.....
Sorry about that
You shouldn't have been a jerk, what?
We English don't have much to sing and dance about these days but the music is second to none....
Do we all agree ?
I agree although I´m not English
this is the epitome of "what if" heartache....this song is awesome.
I always think of my Dad. I miss you, I miss you, I miss you....soooooo much🏴💔🥀
This got me through my first "devastating" breakup when I was 16. 20 years later I still fall apart when I hear it.

To add to my statement, Billy was the singer of The associates, Robert sang back up vocals on the associates first album.
Hermosamente desgarrador

@pernillc ...i agree...I LOVE THIS
Have anyone noticed that The Cure and Cut Here is exactly the same letters?
"So we meet again!" and I offer my hand
All dry and English slow
And you look at me and I understand
Yeah it's a look I used to know
"Three long years and your favorite man
Is that any way to say hello?"
And you hold me like you'll never let me go
"Oh c'mon and and have a drink with me
Sit down and talk a while..."
"Oh I wish I could and I will!
But now I just don't have the time"
And over my shoulder as I walk away
I see you give that look goodbye
I still see that look in your eye
So dizzy Mr Busy, too much rush to talk to Billy
All the silly frilly things have to first get done
In a minute sometime soon, maybe next time, make it June
Until later doesn't always come
It's so hard to think "It ends sometime
And this could be the last
I should really hear you sing again
And I should really watch you dance"
Because it's hard to think
"I'll never get another chance
To hold you to hold you"
But chilly Mr Dilly, too much rush to talk to Billy
All the tizzy fizzy idiot things must get done
In a second, just hang on, all in good time, won't be long
Until later
I should've stopped to think, I should've made the time
I could've had that drink, I could've talked a while
I would've done it right, I would've moved us on
But I didn't, now it's all too late
It's over, over
And you're gone
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you so much
But how how many times can I walk away and wish "If only"
But how many times can I talk this way and wish "If only"
Keep on making the same mistake
Keep on aching the same heartbreak
I wish "If only"
But "If only"
Is a wish too late
Awesome! 5*
