The fact that neither the PS4 nor PS5 are backwards-compatible with the PS3 and many games were not re-released for the new platform also contribute to the PS3 scene still living to this day.

Stick to PS3 for the games that weren’t ported anywhere else, consider PC for the rest. Computers have unmatched backwards compatibility. The graphics are often better on PC and you can play at a higher resolution and frame rate. Games from this time span had unstable and low frame rates on console, they're quite aged so a PC from like the past 5 years it should suffice, older is fine if you're willing to drop some graphics settings. Online multiplayer is free on PC and games that no longer have online services up on console might on PC. There are some caveats, PC port quality was lower back then so the games might have imperfections like not having their performance properly scale up with the power of your computer. GTA IV and Saints Row 2 are prime examples, SR2 specially has many issues though they can be partially alleviated with user made modifications. Games from this era didn’t always have full or any controller support. Another thing that lessens the experience of playing on a computer is the hackers, yet old consoles have them too. Your computer getting hacked is a possibility I guess, I think consoles are vulnerable too. Wii U consoles were recently discovered to be susceptible to hacking by players you were matched against online, and had to be patched. Keep the PC up to date and I think you’ll be be fine, find trustworthy communities to play with and you won’t have to worry about hackers. Look for groups that organize pick up games or pugs, don’t know if console players use the term.
I've been playing COD4 almost every day since january 2010. Since 15/16, it's incredibly hard to find an active lobby other than Team Deathmatch. I used to play Sabotage like a maniac for 8-10 hours a day and was getting 45-60 kills easily on my favourite maps. I will always love this game
Used to love this game on PC, especially CoD 4 promod and finding competitive lobbies on IRC. The punkbuster anti-cheat software isn´t updated anymore, so know it´s a hackfest and unplayable.
As someone who has recently played mw2 with psn online, there’s a lot of hacked lobbies. Something to be careful of as people are able to change the game mode mid game, level up all your stuff, or just set it so when thru shoot their gun they never miss.
@@MAWK3 Unless they changed something which i doubt its super easy in mw2 after all. Even tho modding your ps3 nowdays to cheat is not hard and every PS3 can do that its not even needed in MW2 and the older call of duty ones since people can just share an infected lobby with you to give you cheats. Of course kids will use thoose then if you dont even have to mod your console for it but just join a randoom lobby to get your cheats.
I think they can also reset your level to 1 or that was for Mw3 not sure but I know one of these 2 they can reset which is why I don't play it anymore because Im scared all my progress will go to waste.

Hey at least is not as bad as how Nintendo did it, on some old games its region locked by the version (Japan, American and PAL) not to mention how the console they're in was also region locked, so if you had the American version of the game, not even with VPN could you play with someone from Europe. Hackers fixed it at least lol.

For like all of last year I was still playing on my dusty but trusty PS3 for at least like an hour a day. I found most matches on COD4 and was dominating lobbies with the RPD. After like two months I was invited to a Discord via a PSN message by a guy from one of the matches I was playing that day. It was full of people form all over the world still dedicated to playing PS3 games. It had different lobbies for A LOT of games where you could just shoot a message if you wanted to play a match and within minutes your lobby would be full. I had a blast and the community was awesome. In april this year I built a sick gaming PC and haven’t been on the PS3 since but I might just pull her out of the closet again soon after seeing this. I have a lot of stories if anybody is interested or would motivate you too to bust out that old Playstation and give her a go.
I play my ps3 a lot lately as well but I can't play any of my battlefields on it cuz it say my PSN not connected or something it's really frustrating as I love battlefield not I see on here a lot of people are playing it.
@@steve-o7923I had the same issue. I think it came with 2 factor identification or something. If that’s the case, you have to log into psn on your pc. Don’t exactly remember the rest, but you will figure it out. Or do some online research. Best of luck
3:42 I’m not sure it’s aged like a “fine wine” in terms of gameplay lol the input lag is due to the over abundance of post processing effects for the ps3. Depending on the map/effects on screen, your inputs could register quicker or shorter. That’s why killzone 3 cut back so much on post processing effects to get better input response.
also some good mentions you forgot are Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1. They are still pretty active mostly for PVP. Demon souls even got the servers back on from the fans and made them work with RPCS3 (PS3 Emulator) so its very active on there.
Mass Effect 3 has an awesome co-op MP, I put over 1.5K hours into it over the years. people still play it but it's become harder to find matches these days. Syndicate 2012 and Far Cry 3 were also my fav co-op MPs on PS3 but they both got shut down :( R.I.P.
I played CoD: Ghosts a couple years ago. Biggest hacker nest I've ever stepped into. Whole servers full of people spinning around and shooting into the air, instantly killing each other. I dipped outa there like Homer Simpson back into the bushes.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's multi player is still online on PS3. Though the lobbies can be hit and miss during the week. But it is possible to get full matches that last a few hours at a time.
It's definitely random. I've found lobbies on a random Wednesday night, than absolutely nothing on a Saturday. It probably the best part of that game to.
It’s very interesting to see what happened to the rainbow 6 Vegas franchise. It’s almost worth a video in itself. It seems The Division turned into what was Rainbow 6 Patriots, just outdoor ?? Then you Ghost Recon doing its thing.
As someone who lives in a 3rd world country, quite a few of these games had no lobbies back when PS3 was the main console. PS3 online is sadly a bit “tedious” because of this. Easily expect 2 digit minute wait times in any game that isn’t cod and/or requieres a descent amount of players to get a match started. If you want to get a PS3, do it for the games you missed on, and view online as a “nice bonus” instead of your ticket for countless hours of gameplay… unless it’s Cod.
Crysis 3 for the PS3 was the very first Online FPS I ever played, dating back TEN years ago. I barely remember any of it, but I do recall that in 2013, this game and CoD: Ghosts used to dictate my life. Having to choose one or the other on a daily basis used to give me headaches and I never even got bored of one them until CoD: AW started consuming my life. I know it’s a cliché to look back fondly to where it all started nowadays but I have to say that those were easily some of the most amazing times I had in gaming, ever!
One game I didn’t see mentioned was Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag. The multiplayer on there is still online (players are usually only around during weekends).
Socom Confrontation actually still has a large community thanks to PSOne. I was just playing it, Socom and Killzone 2 make the ps3 online still worth playing today (Killzone 2 is God tier)
CoD 3 was excellent, no persistent stats, no killstreaks, just one match after the next of pure vibes, some maps even had vehicles, but then CoD 4 came out
Split/Second servers are still up. Is an arcade racing game with split screen and online multiplayer up to 8 players. Sadly, there is hardly an active community. You can also play it on Xbox and PC (PC you need vpn to connect with others). It is a fun game made by Disney and you can find the game super cheap nowadays.
Duke Nukem Forever, I also found a couple of randoms playing it when I was testing it out via PlayStation Plus Premium's cloud streaming service on PS5. Tomb Raider surprised me, because I could never find anyone playing the PS4 version online, they must all still be on PS3.
Just watched this out of curiosity as I don't have a PS3, and I'm really impressed with the size of this legacy community! I find I can still get into GTA V lobbies on 360 but most other games are very limited. Likely due to backwards compatibility and price of xBox Live. I'm sure this video was really helpful for some :)
It's such a good console. Some of my best experiences online gaming were with Uncharted 3, Assasin's Creed, PlayStation All Stars, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 (2010).
I saw one of my friends on MW2 there, you killed him but judging by his riot shield class, he was either taking it easy on other players because he didnt want our team to overwhelm and cause everyone to leave, or there was a legit hacker in the lobby
I would also add Dark Souls, you can still find invasions rather easily, and get summoned regularly. Idk about dark souls 2 but I'm sure you can still find people doing duels. The armored core games on ps3 mostly For Answer and Versict Day also still have people doing 1v1 regularly.
@@dantewolf707I play both still with my bro we grew up on them, Lost Planet 1 and 2 are still active on 360 in 2023 but 1 is more active than 2 (prolly cuz 1 is better) 3 I alright but has nothing on 1 and 2 and 3s multi is titally dead
Absolutely nuts that Vegas 2 is still running on PS3 considering Ubisoft destroyed multiplayer functionality on PC. Such are the consequences of publishers who think they're big enough to demand everyone log into their bespoke game service in order to connect to servers, and then proceed to kill those services and the games they depend on later. Lord forbid we have access to P2P lobbies in a co-op shooter. I did manage to get Vegas 2 working by running a Radmin VPN server with my friends. It doesn't take too much effort.
Need Uncharted 2 & 3 online multiplayer & Co Op… I would pay to play those online again…. my fav gaming memories with the kids were on those games 🥺 kinda get lil emotional whenever I think about them shutting the servers down…. didn’t even know they were planning to.. I found out one day when we tried playing.. broke my heart no bs
@@bangleyjelly yea I know on Uncharted 4 they played the weeks best highlights & tips clips in corner of screen.. but.. did they do that on part 2 & 3? Tbh I don’t remember, I don’t think. But speaking of part 4… The #1 thing I wanted was split screen, which made us miss the older games even more. Idk but the older ones had a charm to them.. they gotta be playable in some form in future I’m sure, they were too good to not be revived in some way shape or form..
I’m 23 years old and play bo2 every now and then. Still shitting on kids with a ballista like how I did when I was 16. Skate 3 every now and then as well
Duke Nukem Forever's multiplayer community insane. Have ran into multiple people on there that have been playing the online mode almost every day since it's release. Probably up there for one of the most dedicated communities of all time.
The fact that neither the PS4 nor P$5 are backwards-compatible with the PS3 and many games were not re-released for the new platform also contribute to the PS3 scene still living to this day
In 2006 the ps3 was the worst place to actually play games, it was a screen tearing and frame dropping nightmare i cant even imagine trying to game on it today : P
The ps3 graphically was better then the 360 by the end of its life cycle. The original ps3 hardware was just very complex so game developers had a hard time making games for the system. The last of us was a great example of the ps3s full capabilities
You should check out the last of us factions mp. It’s still have a tight nit community to this day. I used to play it back in 2015 but got sweeped up by other games. Its a bunch of players in 2023. I should note that I’m playing the remaster on PS4 and I’m not sure if the servers are mixed with both consoles but considering that you don’t need ps plus I’m gonna say they probably are.
You miss a bunch of them ... Spec Ops the Line... Syndicate... Call of Juarez cartel... Crysis 3... Rage.... Riddick.... Brink...but im not sûre . Alien colonial marines.... Darkness 2.... Fear 2 et 3... Condemned 2.... Resident Evil 5 et 6... Diablo 3.. Two worlds 2... Sacred 2... Infamous 2...the cgu mission... lol Split Second... Tekken 6 . Injustice.. Blazing Angel 2.. Ace combat... Kane and Lynch 2... Mass effect 3.... Star wars Lego... Fight Night Champion.. All of them still playable
Sadly, the servers for SOCOM have shut down, but I'm pretty sure that PS REWIRED have revived them, so I think it's still good. (I have never connected to any of these types of servers.)
@MAWK3 Of course, man! (I'm not gonna advertise, so this is my alt) I agree, commentary is the hardest part! But keep on going! Your miles ahead of other small youtubers 🫡
It surprises me that there are revival efforts for games I heard had servers shut down over decade ago. As a Golden era CoD stay on, I thought we were some of the only PS3 gamers that still had servers.
its funny how games like cod3 still have active servers on ps3 with a grand total of 0 players on it. I went to play it with a friend of mine just to see if anyone else would show up in a few hours but no ;D

I find I can still get into GTA V lobbies on 360 but most other games are very limited. Likely due to backwards compatibility and price of xBox Live. I'm sure this video was really helpful for some :)
How are you able to play GTA V online on Xbox 360? I thought they shut down the servers?
@@jackal_jack9525 damn i guess its been over a year since I've played it
gta online is back now, it's called gta:og
It's such a good console. Some of my best experiences online gaming were with Uncharted 3, Assasin's Creed, PlayStation All Stars, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 (2010).
I loved medal of honour 2010,COD4,MW2, BO2, BO1, GTA some of my fav online games back in the day
Awesome video. Im glad you touched upon this topic because I'm a active Ps3 user. You can find me on most of the CoDs and Tekken 6 🔥
I’m considering picking up a ps3 and replaying some old games
oh i had no idea it still had online. I should get mine out
I saw one of my friends on MW2 there, you killed him but judging by his riot shield class, he was either taking it easy on other players because he didnt want our team to overwhelm and cause everyone to leave, or there was a legit hacker in the lobby
Small world!
What's your psn?
@@LeftBehind666 killafruit98 !
@@MAWK3 Oh sorry, I thought I was replying to the OP. Great video though.
@@LeftBehind666 No worries 😁 Thanks man!!
Awesome video dude
Awesome video I’ve been playing the old cods on ps3 for a few years now so much nostalgia
I would also add Dark Souls, you can still find invasions rather easily, and get summoned regularly. Idk about dark souls 2 but I'm sure you can still find people doing duels.
The armored core games on ps3 mostly For Answer and Versict Day also still have people doing 1v1 regularly.
It really sucks that lost planet 1&2 are pretty much dead. They were a lot of fun, it sucks that nobody plays them
The odd night you will find some Japanese players on lost planet 1.
@@MAWK3are you serious? There are still people playing levels online on LBP1? I just bought it yesterday on the PSN store and if so I’m so excited!
Lost Planet 1 is still active
@@blueheart2662 what time people play I can never find a match?
Thank for that.ps3 player's really needed
Of Course! The purpose of this channel was to spread awareness 😁
i was actually just playing some MW2 last night. i never played ps3 when it was big so it’s fascinating to hear people with mics on ps3
Never had a ps3 but I want one
Need Uncharted 2 & 3 online multiplayer & Co Op…
I would pay to play those online again…. my fav gaming memories with the kids were on those games 🥺 kinda get lil emotional whenever I think about them shutting the servers down…. didn’t even know they were planning to.. I found out one day when we tried playing.. broke my heart no bs
That is such a bummer😢 the videos that would play at the corner of the menu of the best plays that week was so cool!
@@bangleyjelly yea I know on Uncharted 4 they played the weeks best highlights & tips clips in corner of screen.. but.. did they do that on part 2 & 3? Tbh I don’t remember, I don’t think.
But speaking of part 4…
The #1 thing I wanted was split screen, which made us miss the older games even more. Idk but the older ones had a charm to them.. they gotta be playable in some form in future I’m sure, they were too good to not be revived in some way shape or form..
Same bro 😢
I’m 23 years old and play bo2 every now and then. Still shitting on kids with a ballista like how I did when I was 16. Skate 3 every now and then as well
I play all of them!!!!
Very Nice Vid!!!!!!
Great job!!!
Thank you so much! 🙏
Great job man 👏👍
Duke Nukem Forever's multiplayer community insane. Have ran into multiple people on there that have been playing the online mode almost every day since it's release. Probably up there for one of the most dedicated communities of all time.
hi bro im trying to hit rank42 to unlock all duke things for his home can i join u
@@grant8016 I haven't been on in forever. Unfortunately, I cannot.
Been playing COD ghost on PS3 a lot lately. Actually have a lot of fun on it. Always full tdm lobbys
COD 3 Is VERY underrated! Everyone needs to try it!
This video is Legendary!
it´s 2023 and you still upload in 720p OMG BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The fact that neither the PS4 nor P$5 are
backwards-compatible with the PS3 and many
games were not re-released for the new platform
also contribute to the PS3 scene still living to this
day
GG BRO FROM MY FRIEND LAG HD THE LEGEND PS3 ❤❤❤
Thank you brother 🙏
In 2006 the ps3 was the worst place to actually play games, it was a screen tearing and frame dropping nightmare i cant even imagine trying to game on it today : P
The ps3 graphically was better then the 360 by the end of its life cycle. The original ps3 hardware was just very complex so game developers had a hard time making games for the system. The last of us was a great example of the ps3s full capabilities
@@SWAGGER573 but it still ran terrible and had crazy screen tearing that just feels and looks bad when playing. its actually good on ps4 and 5 tho
W video dude wow! ❤
Thank you! 🙏
Still have my ps3, still play it! 😊
when the original Red Dead Redemption is still being played online and the 'rEmAsTeR' doesn't come with multiplayer at all 💀
You should check out the last of us factions mp. It’s still have a tight nit community to this day. I used to play it back in 2015 but got sweeped up by other games. Its a bunch of players in 2023. I should note that I’m playing the remaster on PS4 and I’m not sure if the servers are mixed with both consoles but considering that you don’t need ps plus I’m gonna say they probably are.
i figured ncaa 14/college football revamped would've been on this list with all the modded support they continued to receive over the years.

@@phsyco6977 Thank you for reminding me!
Is crysis 3 still online
Killzone 2 is back? I just bought a ps3 again. I gotta pick some of these great titles. Awesome video!
When i dont have the Ps Plus i just hop on my PS3 and play online BF3 or offline games because it was still a thing
Man no one remembers Star Hawk. Unbelievably good and reactive online combat.
It was underrated. Warhawk was better but Starhawk was still crazy cool. I’d like them to bring it back to play every once in a blue moon.
very good video man keep going
Thank you so much for the kind words! More content coming very soon 😁 🙏
Wow man great job
Thanks for doing this
Sadly, the servers for SOCOM have shut down, but I'm pretty sure that PS REWIRED have revived them, so I think it's still good. (I have never connected to any of these types of servers.)
how the hell do you have that little subs... your commentary is way better than mine ever will be 🤣 I subbed
Thank you for the support! 🙏 recording voice over is the most grueling part I would say. Takes me like 3 hours 😅 but worth it!
@MAWK3 Of course, man! (I'm not gonna advertise, so this is my alt) I agree, commentary is the hardest part! But keep on going! Your miles ahead of other small youtubers 🫡
@xXacinaterXx Thank you so much man! I'm determined to improve and keep it going 🙏
It surprises me that there are revival efforts for games I heard had servers shut down over decade ago. As a Golden era CoD stay on, I thought we were some of the only PS3 gamers that still had servers.
MW2 2009 is by the far the most famous and most played Call Of Duty. And by far the best COD to be ever made.
Battlefield bad company 2 was great and so was the Vietnam add on for it.
its funny how games like cod3 still have active servers on ps3 with a grand total of 0 players on it. I went to play it with a friend of mine just to see if anyone else would show up in a few hours but no ;D
It's very active on the 360! Not so much anymore on PS3.
Great video! Really will made 🎉
Thank you so much 🙏
@@MAWK3 When first watching your video I never thought you’d had so little subs!!! Like keep it up I can see you reaching 100k in no time I mean it

I am my own worst critic so hearing that reassures a lot 😅

Can confirm dead island and riptide is active
No Fat Princess Mention? I'm Surprised as that can be pretty active as well
Forgot all about that game 😅 I think it is to!
@@MAWK3 It seems more active on the weekends as I tried to look for a game and there was none available.
I just tried that a few hours ago, no servers found, I assumed it was shut down.
@@celticmoose33 It works for me. It's more active on the weekends
yeah its really active
It will be a dark day when the Bad Company 2 servers go offline.
Even worst, 1943 will be completely unplayable 😔
I found and played in a Dragons Crown lobby today.
