It's also because Whittaker and Costas fight was awesome and neither man got finished. The UFC doesn't treat a decision loss in a competitive fight as something that deserves punishment.
Which makes sense, if two guys have a close fight, then it's proof that they're skills are closely matched and they should be ranked closely, not that one guy should leave the other behind in the rankings.

Paulo's last finish was July 2018. Since then he has gone 2-3. Now he is facing the #1 middleweight in the world who has the best defense in the division and doesn't get tired. Yeah Sean is going to teach this man a lesson.

Because it was a hell of a fight. Paulo lost the decision, but Rob wasn't in a position to just run away with the fight at any point. It was competitive throughout and Rob took the harder shots. Strickland and Costa are both in a position to prove they're still competitive at the highest level. Where as Rob's decision victory isn't a decisive enough win to warrant a rematch with Dricus who utterly dominated him. But a win over Chimaev, would put him in the #1-2 contender spot and put him next on the block for Dricus. However Chimaev is a huge threat to the division and could prove a tough match for any of them and will likely get a shot at the champ before anyone else. Unless Costa wins.
@@DthepopeP it was a hell of a fight I will agree I think costa bought back a lot of good will that performance. In his last few he’s looked… unmotivated. Missing weight missing fights that sort of thing. Then he comes out looking great looking like he WANTS it again and brings Rob a war. Rob was doing a middleweight version of what Dustin did when he fought BSD he wanted to know if he still had it if he could stand and trade with someone who had a physical advantage over him as he got trucked by DDP and that’s also kind of always been his weakness. I am very exited about this fight because both guys are coming off super close decision losses and they probably want to give a “I’m not leaving this to the judges” type of performance. I think Costa can actually win this style wise if he comes in looking like he did at his best it’s possible and I want to see if Sean adjusts his style after the close loss.

D’sean will pressure forward with that long jab find his range and cut off the kicks and hooks of costa with a combination of 1-2s , right hooks around the guard and teap kicks that stop Costa forward blitz. Be very cautious of D’sean lining up a right straight sitting down on it exiting from his Philly shell as he parries Costas same side combo.
Costa doesnt Blitz like Dricus, he has a more clean boxing approach and if he goes to the body and plays smart he should be able to win. That being said Costa is not smart like Whittaker or Dricus in terms of tactics. I think Strickland by late tko.
