- Known for producing films that careen from martial arts epics to romantic comedies with enigmatic plotlines, Chinese director Wong Kar Wai curates the fifth installment of SELF, a multidisciplinary arts project conceived by Saint Laurent Artistic Director Anthony Vaccarello. Like its predecessors, A Night In Shanghai evokes the fashion house’s attitude of confidence, individuality and self-expression. Directed by Wing Shya, one of Hong Kong’s leading photographers, this is a story about one woman’s search for self-actualization as she, literally and figuratively, walks a tightrope between her true and performative selves.

I miss WKW films so bad....
IKR!! Fucking Tong Wars is probably shelved. Bright side is Blossoms is announced to be coming out in '25 and will be the fourth installment in the 1960 love trilogy.
in fact wong kar wai and fashion go together a lot, i always thought about it when watching his films. here we see the director's stylistic elements plus what we usually see in fashion films. i wonder if this is why it seems a little bit funny? but it looks cool tho
One of the best Directors in The world
The whole ad feels very typically French (the melancholy, the expressions, the kisses) rather than Wong Kar Wai.
There is really no other director like him. Especially in Cantonese cinema
Love it. Glad they asked Wong Kar Wai in this brilliant project.
Asked him what? I'm trying to understand what his role or mission exactly was. Someone else directed this, commissioned by SL. So what did WKW do? Seems like just a way to add his name to the project, he gets paid, they get the publicity. Nothing valuable here, creative wise.
Wong Kar Wai is an amazing person
However, he has nothing to do with this 'film'.
MrZaz3 it doesn’t change anything
@@elfst. just letting you know that this wasn't made by him, and he has nothing to do with the video!
I just heard of this director and wow...🥀
This feels like a cheap knock off of all the iconic scenes techniques by Wong Kar-Wai and Christopher Doyle. I wonder if Kar-Wai even likes what was made here, or if he was just paid a ton to have his name on the ad.
@Amanda Wong Yeah it feels fake. But that's probably because it is fake. He didn't make this, but "curated" it. Whatever that might mean :')
have to agree this was poorly executed
Cedric self expression for WKW himself
you are hitting the nail on the coffin! this feel so incredibly derivative and affected. and in the description, it says: "Directed by Wing Shya, one of Hong Kong’s leading photographers". Curated? Maybe Wong Kar-wai didn't even take a look lol.
@@nathanxiang1160 Wing Shya was discovered by WKW and brought him on as a still photographer on some of his films including In the Mood for Love, Happy Together, and 2046. WKW had a huge influence on his style and having worked closely with him it's not too surprising WKW trusted him with this. Definite 2046 vibes here and it's pretty spot on IMO. The blatant nod to Fallen Angels with the motorcycle is a little fan service-y but hey in the end it's really a fashion film for YSL so don't expect a 100% free creativity piece of cinema. Also given that WKW takes FOR-EV-VER to make a film and his process isn't very suited for commercials I'm not surprised he might want to take a backseat and just "curate" something. I was really surprised when he made the BMW short.
I wonder where Wong Kar Wai stands in the whole Hong Kong situation
Maybe watching 2046 might help you with that
@@naylynnthant I have
@@p.sheffield I think the film has subtexts eluding to China HK relations. Intentionally titling it 2046, which would be the year prior to the end of HK China agreement of one country two systems in 2047.
probably like all the rest of the Hong Kong cowards who sold out to the CCP
i want to know too, i love his old movies. But he mostly works in China now, i think he probably living in China and HK is not his business for a long long time. According to Variety, he is going to film a new “Chungking Express 2020” in China🙃
Those smirks at the end! 😁😆
WKW curated? Holy damn is this going to be more than awesome!
what does it even mean? "Curated"? like what did he do exactly, beside making some $$$$?
@@subtitledEN curation just means he chose the movie
@@SX1995able Yeah, I know what the word means! But that would make sense if he curates a festival, an event, an exhibition, etc. But how do you curate a movie? Choosing a movie doesn't mean curating a movie. You choose a movie to 'curate' an event where several movies are screened.
@@subtitledEN I think they do it based on the way they've studied the history of film and they need to have some sort of a scholastic like approach to the act
Finally China getting a nod in the fashion industry
Check out Wing Shya; his work is integral to the Wong Kar Wai aesthetic.
FREE HONGKONG
Wong Kar Wai DID NOT DIRECTED THIS SHORT ... READ , Please : WONG KAR WAI CURATED that shorts , This is by Directed by Wing Shya, one of Hong Kong’s leading photographers
Not sure
Whatever you may have to say about if this is derivative of WKW's work or if it's a knockoff, while unnecessary I'd LOVE to see him remake Fallen Angels or maybe even a unexpected "sequel" cause some of the scenes in this at least have nice color and composition on modern film equipment.
It’s a bit sad and losing the soul of his work by putting Chinese words in simplified form (simplified Chinese only used in China/some Asian countries) rather than the traditional form used in Hong Kong that appeared in all his movies!
What does it mean "curates" the film. How film can be curated?
Films can indeed be curated, but is a funny word for what was done here. This still looks very French, not ar all like WKW direction, so whatever "curated" meant, it was only to put his name on this ad.
Exactly. One can curate filmS, or anything, as in selecting different things, from here and there. But this film was apparently commissioned by SL and directed by someone else. So how can one curate one single film that is already commissioned?
@@subtitledEN I guess by paying Wong Kar-Wai to put his name on a commercial that says, curated by Wong Kar-Wai.
Falken Angels'ın Saint Laurent uyarlaması olmuş . Sayın Wong Kar Waicigim seninle aynı zevke sahip olduğum için gurur duyuyorum sjdjdjej ben de el bebek gül bebek filmlerinden birini seçse idim Fallen Angelsi seçerdim teşekkürler snndj
What is the composition that is playing
Any English speaker who could explain me what exactly "curated" means in this context? I know it is use when someone with experience in a discipline selects or presents some artist's material, but this is kind of weird.
Mario Lledó it literally means it was edited by Wong Kar Wai, but by curate it means that the person doin so, has full control of selection of scenes, music and other elements given by the director. Creating an other product than the expected one.
@@LuisMBTFL now I'm more interested on it. Thank you for the info!
@@LuisMBTFL No, one can curate a complete work of art/film with other works. If you select scenes (ie edit) and add music etc, then you are the director or co-directing. A curator doesn't create the work. He selects it and adds it to other works. The word 'curate' here makes no sense whatsoever. And it seems, from the comments, many people are baffled.
so slow...but, I think I understood what this music is
IS THAT JU XIAOWEN?????? OMG WKW & JXW?????
fantasy is like a thief. I have stolen this movie a million times. And saw it once.

very Kar Wai indeed
I hate the font they choose, is horrible.
