    I've been thinking about motorizing my bike but with the ability to recharge the battery by pedal power.
    I love this idea of charging it when going down the hill to help me get back on that bloody steep road 😂

      That makes me wonder how much power you could get with an arrangement of non-cored coils and magnets around all the wheels- like the low speed wind turbine? like a large wheel cover sort of design maybe? I don't know if the added weight, and lower output would be better or worse than the reluctance in a normal "official" generator, as far as how much harder you have to pedal.
      Might not get you enough charge to be worth it, but if it did, that might also give a full electric some extended range.

    • @Neilukuk
      @Neilukuk 3 роки тому +1

      @@ryanjamesloyd6733 I didn't think about that, You could use all of the wheel as a generator. Great idea and hopefully Rob will give his opinion on it.

      @@Neilukuk I know you actually would, given the right electronics. I am using my e-bike to charge 500F supercaps in series (6), and that is a lot of power when you release it (the 24 V motor is the generator, works like a charm in my case). But it needs electronics, so it is not that simple. Without electronics, if the caps are empty, charging the would give so much resistance that your wheel would block almost immediately. (you will need a smart dc to dc converter to create high amps at a low voltage for instance. And the 'smart' part is where it needs to 'know' from you if you are braking hard, or just going down a hill).

    Hello Robert, I did exactly the same thing as you last year. My trike was cheaper at £165 from Amazon. It was old stock, poor paintwork, and only single speed. From that starting point, I changed the rear brake to disc brake and 6 speed, then with a motorized front wheel kit and battery I converted it to electric. After that, I built a custom frame with a lower seat which was fine till this year. I have now built a third version using an American-style lowrider frame with chopper-style handlebars that is in the process of being painted to a light blue colour and should be fully completed soon. As you said, importing the rear axle is expensive, plus of course the cost of postage and customs charges really does double the price to around £300.

      How did you made the conversion for the rear brake to disc? I am trying to find a solution for the disc caliper as it might need and adapter. How did you made it fit?

      @@olteanalinleon Hello, I welded a disc bracket to the frame and used the axle adapter from the old brake to fit the disc.

    Ok so I have a very similar trike, and have discovered that due to the weight, it (maybe 'I' rather) struggles to climb slopes and hills. I've decided that in the near future I want to electrify it. The thing is, ideally I like the idea of a mid-drive but I feel on my one a front hub is much more practical. You see, on the trike in this video, you can see there is ample space to the front of and below the basket to mount a motor, whereas on mine, that space is occupied by the cassette, disk brake, and a a sprocket which drives a smaller chain, which acts as a transmission for the rear axle.

      I have a front wheel drive electric tricycle, being a 20 inch tyre at the front and two 8 inch at the rear. The biggest problem was going uphill as all the weight shifts to the back of the bike and wheel spin became prevalent. I ended having to shift my feet forward onto pegs forward of the centre of the front wheel to get back the traction needed. I suggest if hills are a concern then definitely make it rear wheel drive. Wish I had known before I bought mine.

    Question: Im gonna drill a hole thru the axle and the wheel hub of the non driving wheel and install a pin thru them as need to lock them together to get 2wd on the sand, and remove the pin wheel on hard surfaces. Do you see any fault in that notion? Great vid.

    On the topic of what to do with it...Can you explain a dual power option? Pedal and power? or Pedal/Power depending on what you want at the time? I think that might appeal to the largest sector who would find this series useful.
