Hi Espen you got some fantastic images using that hide the little grebe with the water droplets be the outstanding one. You certainly looked like you were enjoying yourself well worth the effort. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend.
What a beautyful and funny video. It must be an amazing experience. I´m laughing a lot when seeing the hide floating (you know, on the good mood). So cool. Just a question: wouldn´t it be cheaper to make the floating hide bigger so you can have yourself on it? Also maybe a little warmer. Love this kind of videos showing the experience from the inside. Tired of gear videos. What really matters is Nature.
Thanks for the lovely video Espen. If that was you I spotted in a certain M&S car park this afternoon my apologies for the double take! I wasn't expecting to spot a celeb there, if not, I need to visit spec savers.
@@EspenHelland I will do next time. I was sitting in the car at the time and didn't thinks it was right to rush over like a mad man 🤣. It might have also distracted you from your 🛒 driving. I'm guessing, but from the scenery in some of your videos you visit Loch of Butterstone or adjacent lochs. Thanks for the response Espen and take care.
Thank you Jan! I filmed it last month. Some of our grebes stay over winter, like the great crested and little grebe. The Slavonian grebe is long gone however :)
Looks like you have found a new interesting hide. I presume you will be using this a lot in the future. Looking forward to seeing you use it with ice on the water :)
Very nice shots. These floating hides can offer some really great perpectives an get you close to the birds. But is that a sustainable way of wildlife photography? When you walk through mud, water vegetation that is not made for people to walk through? Could it be possible that fish or amphibian eggs, insect larvae or other microorganisms get damaged or destroyed by someone stepping on them without even seeing them? The potential damage to the ecosystem of a pond or lake (or loch / lochan in Scotland) depends on the season, its type and overall condition I guess.
Thank you. I suspect like you say that it would depend on the season wether you'd have any potential impacts on larvae and eggs. Animals like that tends to lay a lot of eggs as a strategy with most of them not surviving. A lot of the time I'm gliding through the vegetation, but with some stepping on the sediment on the bottom, so I don't think there's much impact. One could also say the same about walking through a forest, trampling vegetation and invertebrates. If it was done in excess, with lots of photographers out in the same lochan daily I do believe that it would have a negative impact, but as with most ecological systems some degree of disturbance is part of a healthy ecosystem. With some plants removed makes room for others to grow. I believe that nutrient runoff from nearby farms, stocking of non native fish, accidental invasive species introductions and pollution are the main contributors to unhealthy lochs. But I think you're absolutely right to question if it's sustainable, I think it's important that we tread lightly as nature photographers. Will keep it in mind.
What would you recommend for a floating hide beside tragopan? I might buy that specific one but $1,000 for a blind is quite steep. . Im curious to try it myself but scared ill drop my came gear in the water lol. Outstanding shots brother.
I haven't really tried any other ones, I know it might be a bit pricey, but it's very sturdy and I never fear for my gear in it. Some people make their own ones quite successfully though, maybe worth doing a google search to see if anyone has a tutorial?
Can’t believe you’ve got two “unlikes” for this - what’s not to like? Perhaps subtitles for us hard of hearing? Seriously though, a great video and some wonderful photos. If I wasn’t nearly 70 I might be tempted. Meanwhile enjoying your adventures and pretending I’m there 😂. Might have to look you up for a guiding day sometime.
What a Wonderful Film. Thanks for sharing
Espen. Great Video and great Pictures. Thank you for this great video. 💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍
Sweet mother of freezing cold floating blinds that was awesome! You took one for the team, and it was definitely worth it!
Thanks a lot Brent! Won't trying this in the Vegas lake you photographed at 😅

Wonderful video Espen. Nice work. Think I'll be placing an order with Jonathan for one of those hides. They look great.
Thank you very much Simon! It’s a very fun way to get close to the birds 👍
That looks awesome to try. Would love to give it a go, if nothing else to give the drysuit a run out, as it isn't getting much use diving just now :-)
Definitely worth it!
You are right on "what an incredible experience" thanks for taking along. Great shots.
So peaceful and calming
Fantastic video. Enjoy every bits of it...!

Amazing way to get close to wildlife! I want one but it looks so cold ! Awesome ! 👍😍
Cold, but worth it :) thanks!
I build my own floating hide recently, it really is a great experience and you get so close and such a unique view of water birds.
Nice one! Yes, can't wait to get back out :)

Thank you! Definitely be a bit warmer, but I'm not sure I'd have as much control moving about?
Great stuff Espen, it’s so fun using floating hides! Built myself one last year 🙏😊
Nice one! Thanks Andy
Merci! 🎥🎥🎥👍👍👍
That was wonderful, Espen. It must have been amazing to get so close to the little grebes, in particular. - Malcolm
Absolutely! Cheers Malcolm :)
Wow great video love your work! You couldn't do that where I live too many crocodiles. LOL 😂
😬 yeah no way I would do that!! Thank you :)
@Espen
Are you already using a dry suit?
Keep that amazing stuff comming.
Thank you very much :) Yes it's a dry suit, I'm good for a while, but after two hours or so I start to get quite cold 🥶
Great video. I have wanted to do a floating blind shoot for years. A lot of planning went into this video, didn't it?
Thanks a lot, so much fun 🙂 had a little help filming it
Congratulations on this beautiful video!
What suit did you use, how much time can you spend in the water with it?
It’s a dry suit, after two hours I was cold! But it was autumn so a bit chilly
Thanks for the lovely video Espen. If that was you I spotted in a certain M&S car park this afternoon my apologies for the double take! I wasn't expecting to spot a celeb there, if not, I need to visit spec savers.
😅 That must have been me! I never noticed a double take by anyone though, you should have said hi!

Stunning shots, it's great how you got so close and so low as well. How long did you last out there in these temperatures?!
Thanks a lot Euan! After about two hours I started getting quite cold, probably just lasted another 20 min after that
Incredible, Espen... Did you just recently film this? The grebes, one of my favourites, have all flown south from here in Alberta, Canada/.
Thank you Jan! I filmed it last month. Some of our grebes stay over winter, like the great crested and little grebe. The Slavonian grebe is long gone however :)
Nice video.
Very nice video...is it cold 🥶 in the water?
It wasn’t too bad at first, but after 2 hours I started to feel quite cold 🥶
wow .....❤️❤️❤️❤️ love from kashmir
Looks like you have found a new interesting hide. I presume you will be using this a lot in the future.

What is the reference of suit you wear in this vedeo?
Hi,
Can you swim with this hide or does your feet have to be on the ground?
You can swim, but you keep it steadier when your feet are on the ground

how you did this floating? I have two ideas to make one for me
This is from Tragopan so made to float 🙂
Wow. How very different. Great photos. With your dry suit, underwater next time?
You read my mind! When the little grebe was diving all I could think about was how cool it would be do capture it under water. In due time :)
What are you wearing?
Dry suit I picked up on eBay

Dry suit! It’s cold 🥶😁
