    I like the idea of stitching the lines in to give the bag a bit of body. Thanks! I'm going to try this using a bit of essential oil instead of the lavender. Or I might try both and compare. :)

      Thank you Trish :D me too! I made some without lines and it's doesn't heat the same. The rice just kind of spills to all the edges and than my toes are cold LOL Love the idea of adding oils I can't wait to try it :D Let me know how it goes :D

      Don't want to get the rice wet though or it will mold.

    PS-- Forgot to mention to make a couple channels so the rice is evenly dispersed. I will try putting lavender in bags the next time as I live in an area of many lavender farms and have a few plants in our yard. I also use scraps for making cat toys with my home dried catnip, and make bowl cozies to hold hot bowls out of the micro.

    Thank you so much for this video! Does anyone know how long uncooked white rice can be reused in a heat pad before it stops working?

      Your very welcome Kristin. I've been using the same rice bag to this day. Still works great. Not sure how much longer it'll last :) so far haven't noticed a difference.

      Use cotton only, as sometimes poly or other material might give you problems (I also use only cotton thread when making something that will go in the micro). I have fibromyalgia and hurt all over at times so usually heat up two at a time, and I like them quite warm so 2 min for both of them is usually right for me. Any longer, you risk burning yourself so be careful. Start with 1 minute and then increase by 30 seconds until you figure out how your microwave works on them. My bags are used several times every day, and usually replaced in about 4 months. I am guessing that the usual longevity would be a couple years, or more, if used only a few times a week. They stay warm about 20 minutes, before rewarming. Most injury, strain, or ache should not have the warm applied for more than 20-30 minutes, then off or cold applied or the same amount of time. (I cheat a lot and leave it on longer as it gives me such comfort, but I really should not do that). The rice will turn brown inside eventually, and sometimes has a bit of odor, and the outside cover will get dirty and so you will probably have to toss it and make another before it stops warming. There is really no way to clean it and perhaps a thin cotton cover, like made out of an old pillow case, might be a good idea if you want to use it over some dirty clothing, like if you have been working in the garden or painting something. I am sorry this is so long but it is a very inexpensive way to use up scraps from sewing, or old clothes that you like the pattern, and I hope you get a lot of comfort, warm feet, pain relief etc-----

    What a great idea! I will try this too. How long do you heat it? And what temperature pls? So I don’t burn the rice ha 😷

    • @diylilyardor3435
      @diylilyardor3435  4 роки тому

      I'm not sure what the temperature settings are on my microwave. I usually just use the 30 second button. Depending on what size you make it could be anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

      Cotton works best in the microwave if you use polyester it will burn and might catch fire. :) (personal experience)

    I have questions if you please! I didn't notice, but what are the dimensions? And, do you have any experience with essential oils? I have some, & would prefer to use them in this. I had a rice pack made a little differently than yours, but I like yours better so want to try it, but would appreciate the dimensions. Thanks for post!

    • @diylilyardor3435
      @diylilyardor3435  5 років тому +2

      I made some that were 10" x 6" and some that are 8"x6"
      I've heard that essential oils work great you can even drop them on top after you make the warmers. :)

    Lily, How much lavender to rice? 1 cup rice/1/2 lavender?

    • @diylilyardor3435
      @diylilyardor3435  7 років тому +6

      I did somewhere around 1 cup Rice to 1 tsp of dried lavender maybe even less because once the lavender heats up in the microwave the aroma is super strong. My neighbors probably smelled the first rice bag I made. lol I put so much lavender in it that we literally had to leave it outside overnight to air out.
