[NATURE] How to Read & Use Tide Charts for Beach Hiking: Point Reyes Crater, Alamere Falls, & More

- Here's a 22-minute video sharing my experiences as well as a few friends' experiences with hiking the Marin and Mendocino County coastlines in Northern California, and what I've learned regarding the importance of understanding and tracking tide charts. Shout-out to members of my hiking fam who directly or indirectly made this video possible, and from whom I've gained much of my hiking knowledge. As part of this project, I also created a custom map on AllTrails showing different paths available for walking to the Point Reyes Crater. See below for the AllTrails link.

I visited point Reyes for the first time in my life a few weeks back. Went to the lighthouse, then chimney rock, then the cypress trees and had no idea there was so much to the area! While sand heights can be "seasonal", I have seen them change 4 - 6 ft in a 24-hour period, due to major storms.
The low tides that you cite of high three to four feet, may have been the low for the day, but are not relatively low tides. Common low tides are in the 1 to 2 ft range. Negative tides being relatively rare. The tide gauge is based on MLW (mean low water), which is an average of low tides for the year. Actual conditions can vary greatly from the predictions due to circumstances like excessive river runoff, which may not be included in the prediction. As you rightly point out, you have to evaluate the real-time situation, and act accordingly. Nice job!
Incredible video! I’ve seen some videos where the crater entrance is so low you have to crawl and some where you can just walk in are there difference entrances?
I think all those videos show pretty much the same entrance. I assume it’s an example of what National Park Service was saying about how the amount of sand on the beach can differ at different times/seasons. So the “ground” is so high sometimes that it covers up most of the entrance, hence making crawling necessary.
@@LeLiuOfficial so that means the crater fills with water then? Thats very very interesting. I want to go when the low tide .5 and its the only time I can go. Im thinking if I have water shoes we should be able to make it.
@@robertthurman1336 Yup the base of the crater will be filled with water during high tides. Negative tide level and water shoes definitely recommended
@@LeLiuOfficial I’m going on July 5th when the tide is at .5 at 9:52am. I’ll have water shoes and we are going to run in and out quickly so I’m hoping that’s low enough tide. I went when it was 3.4 and there was no way I was going to do that haha.

Just tell me which footage (timestamps from my video) that you're interested in. If I am the owner of that piece of footage, then I can share it with you via Google Drive. I really only have a few shots I recorded. Otherwise it was mostly photos.

Basically anything that shows the inside of the crater would be awesome. I’d you have a shot of you walking into the crater and panning upwards that would be great.
