Excellent. One of the best tutorials in the knitting world. Clear, no nonsense music or time-wasting introductory nonsense. Brilliant.
Thank you, Penny :-) Happy knitting, my friend!
The immense satisfaction I felt having unpicked from just above the cast on edge 280 stitches beautifully onto a circular needle is priceless. THANK you so much for this tutorial.
THANK YOU SOOOOO much. I made an error on a bottom up cardigan sweater, I was not familiar with the Italian tubular cast on and made a mess. I didn't know this until I was almost finished with the sweater! I was so discouraged I almost decided knitting was not for me! After finding your video and realizing this could solve my problem, I am now ready to take on this challenge! Thank you!!!
I am so happy this issue didn't make you abandon knitting. If you run into a knitting problem in the future, please let me know. We'll figure it out. Happy knitting, my friend!
This was EXACTLY what I was looking for Thank you, thank you, Thank you!
You are an absolute hero! I’ve been picking apart my cast on edge for half an hour until I was almost ready to just give up on my jumper, but this saved me so much stress and anger 😅
I made myself a sweater 43 years ago. It was the first sweater I'd ever made for myself. The body was too big, but now it fits just right. The sleeves are were and are too long. Now that the kids are grown, the grandchildren are in school and I'm retired, I can shorten the sleeves. THANK YOU for showing me how.
My favourite thing about you tube and the incredible people who take their time to make content is that no matter what I want to learn, I can always find someone who is there to teach. This time I'm so happy to discover 10 rows a day!! Now I can save my leg warmer that is too loose at the top cuff AND I can find out heaps more things to learn.
I'm especially grateful for the thought to add the pattern for the jumper you're wearing. My first thought was "that's beautiful" and my second was "how will I ever find that pattern". This has made my day.
Thank you, Jessica. I am happy you find my tutorials helpful. Thank you, my friend :-)
Very clear and concise! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
THIS IS A WONDERFUL VIDEO. I've been knitting for over 60 years and never, ever knew this was possible!!!! Thank you.
Scares me a little might try it
Brilliant. I have a favorite sweater was washed by a well meaning cleaning helper...and it shrank...so I need to rework the bottom ribbing and add an inch or two so I can use the sweater again. Your tutorial taught me something I didn't know! Thanks a lot.
You are most welcome, Cedric :-) Good luck with the "knitting surgery"!
This video just saved a project that i was so excited about! I accidentally ripped the cast on edge on a blanket I’ve been hard at work on and wasn’t sure how I was going to salvage it. This technique will allow me to simply go add a few extra rows at the top once I actually finish! Thanks so much :)
So happy to hear that your blanket is saved! Happy knitting, Jess :-)
Thank you. This really helped me. I had to fix the first few rows of the scarf I was knitting (1st ever project). It was easy to understand (and scary to do). I will probably never knit again, but I enjoyed doing this for my daughter.
Thank you so much for your clear instructions! You’re saving my beautiful sweater I knit for my grandson where the sleeves came out far too long. Now I can fix them without undoing the whole shawl collar and re-knitting the sleeves. Awesome!
Thank you, Adrienne :-) I am happy I could help. Happy knitting!
Thank you! This video saved my project.
This was extremely helpful, thank you so much! I made a cardigan for my daughter-in-law and unfortunately the sleeves were too short 😭. But now I can hopefully make them longer without undoing everything 🤩. Thanks so much, I like your videos a lot!
Thank you, Bettina. I am really glad to know that this simple method helped you to avoid unravelling the sleeves of your daughter's sweater. Happy knitting, my friend :-)
Thank you for this video. Very clear instructions and just what I needed. Perfect.
Thank you endlessly for this!! You just saved me from frogging a gift knit that has been causing me grief for months!
So happy to hear that this little trick saved you from unravelling your project :-) Have a wonderful holiday season and happy knitting!
Your video saved me and my project. The sleeves were 11+ inches too long, but using your method, I was able to shorten them to the length I desired, then added a 1x1 rib cuff. Thank you so much!
My dear Irene, I'm so happy to know that I could help you fix the sleeves of your project. I know how frustrating it is to discover that the measurements are far off. This simple technique saved me and my projects more than once, I'm glad it helped you as well :-) Happy knitting, my friend!
So far, there is nothing I want to know about knitting, or solving knitting problems, which I have not found here. Clear, concise instruction, no faffing about, and, best of all, it always works. You have given me such confidence to try new things, learn different skills and, now, to cut up a jumper!! :)
Thank you for this video and all your wonderful instructions. I'd like to sign up for your newsletter, but I can't find anywhere on your site to do that.
Thank you so much for the kind words. It means the world to me to know that you find my tutorials helpful. Thank you, my friend 🙏You are very welcome to sign up for my weekly newsletter. You can do it at www.10rowsaday.com/sign-up Happy knitting!
I literary sat for hours and hours and hours undoing an Aran sweater I am busy knitting for my granddaughter to make it longer. I have been putting off doing the front of the sweater 🙈 Now I'll be a little more clued up... Thank you very very much for this video! ❤
I am happy I could help :-) Happy knitting, Mareta!
Thank you so much!! This is going to save a project I made for customer 😬!!
You have saved me in ways I cannot express!!! Thank you, you wonderful human being! Truly! Love, from Minnesota❤️
I'm so happy to know that. Thank you, Allison :-)
Thank you so much for providing this tutorial as it is immensely helpful. I have had several of my sweater projects wind up with sleeves that are too long or too short and it has always been so difficult to undo the yarn from the cuff. Your method makes it so much easier to accomplish this task.
I'm happy I could help :-) Happy knitting!
Omg too bad I didn’t watch this before I struggled for hours on how to fix thank you thank you thank you!!
Awesome Awesome Awesome! Just a perfect helpfunctie explanation!! Thank you!!
Thank you :-)
Thank You! Exactly what I was looking to do😊
Thank you so much!!! You saved me from making a scarf for my son. We ran out of the yarn and I couldn’t find the same color so we decided the scarf to have two color at each end of the scarf 😊.
What a creative way to adjust the project! I'm happy I could help :-)
Thank you soooo much for this tutorial! I just finished watching and am confident I can do this instead of my usual way of unpicking a CO edge....which is soooo time consuming and difficult.
Over this whole year I've had to move my cardigan/jacket many times, andstop and start repeatedly and the 3 panels are all different lengths though I counted carefully....I was using up a couple of different yarns and the cardi was supposed to be like a coat so quite large...I already ripped out most of it and reknitted for another issue. An hour ago I found out all the pieces are different lengths! You are a lifesaver...and hopefully I will have a finished cardi/coat by year end! Thank you so much!!!!!
I am happy I could help :-) Good luck with the cardigan!
I have literally 36" of a scarf to undo!!! From the cast on side 😬
Need to watch this over and over. And over.
Thank you!!!!!! 🙏🏾💗
Good luck, my friend! I hope that this method will help you save your project.
Thank you 🙏🏼 very helpful. A lifesaver really!
Thank you so much for this! My daughter just told me her socks were getting tight at the top and I need to take the cast on apart! This helped me so much!
My mom did this many decades ago but I had forgotten how. Thanks , this was a perfect tutorial on how to do this. THANKS !!
You are most welcome, my friend :-) Happy knitting!
You just saved my first sweater! After months of work I messed up picking up the provisional cast on for the neckline and it's a mess! Now I have a way to fix this and finish my sweater! Thank you so much, this was so clear and helpful!
Thank you! I just finished a scarf when yarn at the cast on edge broke. Yikes! With the instructions from this video, I’ll be able to save the project, which is a gift for my child’s teacher.
Oh my gosh! Thank you SO much for this video and idea. I was on the last part of a sweater and realized I had knit the ribbing on the front part two needle sizes smaller than the back part. You are a life (sanity) saver! 💗🧶
You are most welcome, Michelle :-) I'm happy I could help. Good luck with the sweater!
I didn’t even know this was possible! Thank you thank you! Another great technique 🥰
thank you this video saved me unravelling many rows to change what you described
You just saved me and my first flax sweater. After blocking the sleeves are about 10 cm longer than they should be. I was horrified but now I am determined to save it ♥️
Happy to help :-) Good luck with fixing your sweater, Jana!
You make it very easy to do. I have along line cardigan i knitted and didn't like the length. So this will be my go to video to shorten it. Thank you so much.
You are most welcome, Barbara :-) Good luck with the cardigan!
Great tutorial. Worked perfectly. Very well explained
Thank you, Marcelle :-) Happy knitting!

You just saved a blanket that was 90% done - I was in absolute despair, but it’s so simple to fix!
Perfect. Just what I wanted and so well explained. Many thanks.
Thank you, Kathatine :-)
Thankyou for very useful and clear instructions ive been knitting for iver 50 years and never knew how to do this ❤
Thank you for the video. It has been helpful to reknit the bottom of a scarf. Where the starting point of the yarn should be was what I needed to know..
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This will save me from frogging the entire cowl. Unfortunately I discovered that I made a mistake 5 rows from the beginning and I was almost finished. I am ready to join the provisional cast on to the end of the cowl. This will save me a great deal of time and trouble! What a life saver! Thank you again!
Brilliant! Thank you
Thank you, I would have been so lost without your video.
Thank you, Carol :-)
Thank you so much! I knit one sock leg longer then the other and had no idea how to fix it, now I do!! You are an amazing teacher!
I’ve been looking for this kind of tutorial forever! I need to extend the length of some sleeves from my first sweater and I was so sad because after all of that work, I haven’t worn it once
Thank You so very much! This video is great and exactly what I needed. The explanation is easy to understand.
Thank you, Riina :-) I'm glad it was helpful.

Thank youuuu it is so helpful! First time knitting a sweater and found out I made it too wide after 3 balls of yarn oh god I cried all night but you saved me!
Thank you! I'm so happy I could help. Happy knitting :-)
I knitted a tubular scarf on circular needles using a long tail cast on. I should have done a provisional cast on. After watching your video, I'm going to try to unravel the first row and put on another circular needle to kitchener join the ends.
This is amazing, and so simple. Thank you very much!
This saved my scarf, thank you!!
Excellent tutorial & very helpful for my cardigan project! Thank you so much for sharing, much appreciated!
Thank you so much for this magic trick. Knit on!
You are most welcome, Melissa :-) Happy knitting!
@@10rowsaday Hello, I'm back and getting ready to use this technique. I want to undo the cast-on edge and then add another color. Here's my question. When I've unraveled and am ready to tie on a new color, when I'm holding the work in front of me, shouldn't the yarn tail be on the right side of the needle with the piece of knitting so I can start knitting onto the the empty needle in my right hand? I'm right-handed. Again, many thanks and best to you.
Great video! Thank you.
Wow wow super techniques in knitting, thanks, very helpful info. 🌼🌺🌸
You're a life saver thank you!
Thank you, Jennifer! I'm happy I could help :-)
That was so good and easy.Thank you so much ❤
Thanks very helpful I am just a beginner and forgot to read the pattern properly ... phew I can now carry on 😀
Absolutely BRILLIANT! My little guy fit the sweater I made him everywhere but the sleeves. They are too short. I'm off to fix them now.
excellent
Wow! I didn’t know this was possible! I began a sleeve using only one ball, then began alternating skeins after 5 or 6 rows. It looks horrible like that. Now I’ll give this a try.
Thank you thank you thank you !
Thank you , well done I can now adjust my sleeves 😄
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this lifesaver!!
So brilliant, Maryna! Thank you. 🧶💡🥰
Thank you!
That’s great. Thanks.
Very helpful! I have some vintage sweaters with holes and stains on the cuffs and I've been wondering how to repair them.
It is so kind of you to take time to repair vintage sweaters. I'm happy this little trick helps you to give them a new life :-)
Thanks 4 sharing!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️💜💜💜💜
Thank you!!
Thank you for this useful video.
When I undo knitting from the cast on edge, is it normal to get a decreased number of stitches? Usually, just one stitch less than the original count. Is it just me? :)
The number of stitches should stay the same, but one stitch at the edge of the work will be a half stitch. Pick it up even though it looks more like a yarn over than an actual stitch. Good luck :-)
I was wanting to do this in order to reuse the yarn
Thanks so much, yours is stocking stitch could you do this if it’s a moss stitch pattern please
Sure. This method works equally well for all stitch patterns.
Forgive me if this is a silly question, but if you then add more rows, does it not matter if you are now working stitches in the opposite direction of the rest of the project?
Hi Cheryll. I don't believe in silly questions :-) Every question is important and yours is actually very smart. After we pick up stitches, we should be very careful about the stitch pattern. Look at the fabric and work the first row so that it continues to build the stitch pattern. Otherwise, this knitting surgery will be visible. Happy knitting, my friend!
OMG... this is fantastic!!! Can it be done on a border of seed stitch? If so, will the offset of the stitches be visible? (due to upside down)
Hi Simone. You are right - this method works best when the project is made in stockinette or stockinette-based stitch pattern. The stitches will be slightly shifted if you do it on seed stitch, but it won't be too visible because seed stitch has a "messy" texture. Good luck with the "knitting surgery" :-)
Very helpful! I am looking for a way to unravel the neckline of a top down sweater and reknit it . Can you help?
You will have to make a "knitting surgery" described over here - www.10rowsaday.com/undo-from-caston Good luck :-)
I just found this video. Thank you. Could you please tell me if I would do the same for a sock cuff I knit in the round? Thank you.
Yes, Francine, the technique is the same but be very careful when you pick up stitches. At the beginning of a round, the stitches will form a "step". It is totally normal because knitting in the round is actually knitting "on a spiral". Good luck :-)
This looks really helpful, thank you. I was just wondering about adding some length to a jumper I've been working on which has come up WAY too short. So if I follow this technique and take off the bottom, add some more stocking stitch rows... what do I then do when I reach the 'new' bottom edge where there needs to be ribbing for the hem? Is it possible to continue knitting in rib, upside down? Thank you :)
Of course, Danielle - you can finish the edge in any stitch pattern you like. Ribbing looks pretty much the same whether we work it from the bottom up or from the top down. Happy knitting :-)
Is there a different process if you are trying to undo ribbing or would you do the same thing? Thank you so much for this!
It could be a bit tricky to do it on ribbing. The process of undoing the work and picking up stitches is the same regardless of the stitch pattern. If you plan to shorten the project and will bind off stitches right after you pick them up, it will look fine on most stitch patterns. But if you plan to lengthen the project, the stitches will be shifted by half-stitch on a ribbing. It will be visible unless you add a row of stockinette stitch. That row will not completely hide the imperfection, but it will make it less visible. Alternatively, you can add a few rows of garter stitch or a cable or some other stitch pattern to turn this imperfection into a decorative element. Good luck :-)
Your videos are wonderful.. I wonder if you have one that addresses this issue with lace. I want to cut the ribbed cuff off sleeves so I can lengthen them but the fabric is lacy and not stockinette - how would I do that? Thank you.
The process of cutting and picking up stitches is the same as the process described in this tutorial. One word of caution though - try to pick up stitches in a wrong-side row of the lace pattern - a row that usually doesn't have yarn overs and decreases.
As to lengthening the sleeves in the same lace pattern, it is very difficult to do invisibly. The place where you picked up stitches will show, unless you reverse-engineer the lace pattern to work it "upside down", and even then the transition won't be perfectly invisible.
As a simple workaround, you can use a different stitch pattern to lengthen the sleeves. Choose a pattern that works nice with that lace, and it will look like it was meant to be there all along. The easiest solution will be to make the ribbed cuffs much longer.
Good luck 🙂
Thank you so much - I will try! @@10rowsaday
Thank you this is priceless. The only thing I am confused about is: if you start knitting that edge in the opposite direction from bind off edge, won’t the “V”’s of the knitting be going the wrong direction? Can you demonstrate this?
Hi Nancy. You are right - there will be a slight jog in the first row or round. It is not that visible in stockinette stitch, but it is quite noticeable in ribbing. If you plan to undo part of the fabric worked in ribbing or similar stitch pattern, either work a section in stockinette, garter stitch or similar stitch pattern, or undo the work between sections worked in different stitch patterns. Knitting "surgery" is always a creative task :-)
Having finally worked up the courage to do this I realised that my project (jumper) was knitted in the round. Can I just follow these instructions anyway, or is there a different way of lengthening it?
The process is the same for projects worked back and forth and the ones worked in the round. To lengthen a seamless project (like your jumper), use circular needles and pick up stitches from both the front and the back, then attach the yarn and make a section that will make your jumper longer. Work in the round and use any stitch pattern you like.. Good luck :-)
Thanks for this! I just realized after 18cm of knitting 172 stitches in the little hearts stitch pattern, I have nine strange looking hearts in a row repeat in the first cm. Fixing from the top down seems really daunting given the crossed yarn overs. To do this technique, as an alternative, could I place a lifeline using the same size needle circular just above the mistake, then cut and unravel, then bind off? I’m worried about cutting the yarn and then trying to pick up the stitches in this particular stitch pattern. What do you think?
Hi Jane, Of course, you can bind off stitches after the "knitting surgery". It will probably be safer, because not all stitch patterns look the same when they are worked from the top down. If the pattern has heart motifs, most likely those hearts will show upside down when knitted from the bottom of the cut down. In this case, it is better to bind off stitches at the bottom and work an extra cm of fabric the usual way - from the bottom up. Good luck :-)
@@10rowsaday , thanks for your reply. Very clear! The thing that’s puzzling me a bit is, is there any problem with picking up the row that I’m going to bind off, and then cutting the yard to unravel? The video suggests doing this in the opposite order - cut and unravel, then pick up.
Could I use this technique to fix a boat neckline that is too large /open in a top down knit sweater? I’d like to rework the neckline but would that I be knitting in the opposite direction?? My cast on edge is at the top, it’s a rolled edge boat neck. Unsure if this would work. Thank you
Hi Susan. It is an interesting task to undo the neckline and make it smaller. If you want to add just a few rounds to the neckline, you can probably do it without any worries. If you'd like to make the neckline considerably smaller, you might need to add a few short rows at the back to shape the added section properly. Good luck :-)
