  • This is an easy tutorial for how to divide your imperial size watercolor paper into smaller pieces - without cutting or measuring. This is my method. It leaves the paper with a rough (almost deckled) edge that matches the factory edge (only slightly less "frayed").
    Imperial Size = 30×22 inches (76x56cm)
    Half = 15×22 inches
    Quarter = 11×15 inches
    Buying large sheets of paper is more cost effective and you can easily break them down into any size you want! I highly recommend this for saving money.

    I do almost the same thing 😂 I used to use my paper cutter, but decided I'd like a decked edge. In my search for an affordable deckle edge tool ($30 is ridiculous imo) I remembered this trick I used in elementary school. I don't use any sponge or water which gives it a slightly more ragged edge which is what I'm after. Great tip to share, Sarah!

    Thank you so much!
    I just got my first sheets, and as it is 2021 and prices of all art supplies are skyrocketing, you are the perfect teacher to allay my tearing phobia.
    It worked grandly! This is the way to go. I got one each of hot and cold.
    I thank you sincerely ❤️

      Antonea Payan yea! I buy it in bulk when I find deals. Sometimes it comes out to less than $1 per sheet after I divide it, which is awesome for the really nice stuff

    Quick tip always wash your hands before touching watercolour paper to remove any oils and grime you may transfer to the paper

    I'd like to learn how you might go about getting a deckel edge on paper that has a cut edge.

      In my experience it’s very tedious, you have to do this process along the edge (fold a tiny bit, as little as possible then tear along the edge).

    Thank‘s a lot for your video! Is this method of dividing an imperial sheet of paper also possible with 640 g watercolor paper?

      You might have to soak the edge for longer, fold back and forth more, and use a LOT of strength when you pull!

    A great tip. I havent used imperial sheets at all yet. I've only bought pads, my current favourite being the Cass art jumbo A3 pads in smooth and not types. They seem to be great value. I have steered away from the more expensive papers because of the cost, so maybe this would be a way I could venture into that area. What would be your advice on paper types ( quality vs cost) and where do you access them in Scotland?

      Hey! Yes, I'd say buying this bigger sheets and breaking them down is more economical. I prefer Arches cold press (300gsm), Bockingford Rough, or Fabriano Artistico Hot or Cold press. I buy them wherever I can find deals, but I especially like Ken Bromley, as they have free UK shipping. They also sell "starter packs" which let you try out a bunch of brands/types! www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-mini-starter-pack-20-watercolour-paper-sheets.htm

      Thank you, I'll have a look into that pack, it looks a great idea. I've bought stuff from Ken Bromley before so I know they are a reliable retailer. I hadn't noticed that they did such a thing.

    Can we cut 440 gsm using this technique

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 роки тому

      That might be a little more tricky since it's so thick..but if you are patient and repeat the steps a few more times it should work.

    Mam can u explain what is emperial size in drawing !!!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  4 роки тому +1

      Imperial size is the industry term for watercolor paper at it's largest size (except for rolls). Full Imperial size is 30"x22" (76.2x55.9cm) and Half Imperial is 22"x15" (55.9x38.1cm). These are standard sizes. Some companies even make easels and stretchers specifically for these sizes.

    Would you recommend wearing gloves while doing this, so the skin oils don't affect the paper sizing?
