No - this was from a raw testing session that was pasted over the trailer without properly mixing it in (that is why the audio levels are way off) as this trailer with Stephen Russell's voice was just a concept test that was made for internal viewing only. This was from very early on during the development when Stephen Russell was invited to do some preliminary voice testing (there was no full script at that point and direction was in the artist's own hands because it was all very preliminary). Stephen Russell himself was many years older by this point and his voice had changed (I like his voice work even to this day, but his voice having become raspier is evident in his later voice roles and that is just him having aged), so one shouldn't even expect him to sound like he did all those years ago: while the sentimental part of me would have liked to see him in Thief once again, this is not even supposed to be the same Garrett (and for the record, had there been a Thief game after Deadly Shadows, it wouldn't have been the same Garrett in it either; it would have been a full reboot taking place in the real world in modern day). Romano Orzari does his job well as a different Garrett and I remember Stephen Russell having stated when asked at a convention by a fan that he has no grudge about Orzari having gotten the job - they are both just actors doing their job (Orzari himself played a prominent role in Assasin's Creed II and also performed in its live-action prequel movie).

Exactly, Niko. I remember following the news about this game, and when this particular trailer surfaced (leaked), employees at the game's official forums confirmed this being from an early testing session and it was just made for internal viewing as a test (I see you also followed the game's news).

I have to say, I grew up playing the *original*/*genuine* Thief games (the trilogy), and I loved those. I hated "THIEF". Tried to like it, but it was a very cheap knockoff, which attempted to make up for it with eye candy.
I think I might have liked it at least a little bit if they had kept Stephen Russell. Then it would at least have seemed like half an attempt at doing the series justice...

I’d absolutely love for thief to be made by Arkane studios, wish they could buy the IP- I think they are the only studio who could do the game justice. I just think how awesome the lore, story and games are the Thief series deserved books and movies set it that universe. Although the first 3 games are held in high regard, I just feel there was a lot of unfulfilled potential in the u inverse.Experiencing the atmosphere of gloom, story and art direction it just captivated me so much as with deadly shadows.

To be honest even with Stephen it wouldn't work. New thief has a different personality and goals. Old Garrett lived in an apartment and his main motivation to go stealing was paying the rent. In meantime he had to listen to countless annoying reminders from Keepers. New Garrett lives like some kind of super hero and has a strong kleptomaniac issues, because instead of selling his trinkets, he keeps them on proud display.

Didn't quite sound like Garrett until he said "progress". I've not played Thief 4: Shit, but I read that the character was changed from being a hardheaded pragmatist to a "I thieve because it's WHAT I AM" kind of nonsense. The justification for going with a different actor seemed ridiculous, too - they needed someone who could do their own mocap stunts.

    • @NikoChristianWallenberg
      @NikoChristianWallenberg 4 роки тому +2

All the characters that had extensive choreographed moments had their voice actors performing in motion capture their own stunts while they were voicing them at the same time - it might seem ridiculous to you, but it is an increasingly common thing. As for Stephen Rusell's voice in this trailer, the voice came from a raw testing session that was pasted over the trailer without properly mixing it in (that is why the audio levels are way off) as this trailer with Stephen Russell's voice was just a concept test that was made for internal viewing only. This was from very early on during the development when Stephen Russell was invited to do some preliminary voice testing (there was no full script at that point and direction was in the artist's own hands because it was all very preliminary). Stephen Russell himself was many years older by this point and his voice had changed (I like his voice work even to this day, but his voice having become raspier is evident in his later voice roles and that is just him having aged), so one shouldn't even expect him to sound like he did all those years ago: while the sentimental part of me would have liked to see him in Thief once again, this is not even supposed to be the same Garrett (and for the record, had there been a Thief game after Deadly Shadows, it wouldn't have been the same Garrett in it either; it would have been a full reboot taking place in the real world in modern day as the old developers have confirmed).

    • @DaveDexterMusic

@@NikoChristianWallenberg The trouble with pasting the same response to three people (at least) is that you miss things you're responding TO. I never said I expected him to sound like he used to, but I DID say that he sounded like Garrett after one or two lines. The mocap thing is still a terrible justification. My issues are with the change to his character, borne out by the Thief 4 we got - Garrett's personality was entirely changed, and whilst you can say it's not the same Garrett, the game is clearly trading upon our fondness for him by giving him the same name, a mechanical eye, and including some of the same characters from 1 & 2. Added to which, despite this being an internal test, they clearly _wanted_ it to be the same Garrett at one point because Russell was hired to do this voice work, and indeed cast him before being replaced; and the given reason for not hiring him was the aforementioned mocap nonsense, not because they didn't like his voice. So, it's the same Garrett with terrible writing and a change from "I thieve because the landlord's coming" to "I own the night!" nonsense. If the writing had been on par with the originals, a new voice could be forgiven.

thats not Garrett and those are not hes shoes!

    • @glenngriffon8032
      @glenngriffon8032 6 років тому +11

Exactly. This game was not bad because Stephen Russel wasn't in it, this game was bad because it was a bad game. They ignored everything from the predecessors.
The real Garrett was a cynical, misanthrope. He wasn't a ninja and he didn't have lightning reflexes, if he did he wouldn't have had an eyeball plucked out.
He thought he was smarter and more skilled than everyone else around him and to *some* degree, SOME, that was true. He was the best of the Keepers when it came to being stealthy but disliked their methods. His youth spent on the streets gave him a craving for wealth and money but here's the thing, Garrett never got that wealth. When you play the first two games he remarks about having to meet rent and get food.
And yes, he did have "tap shoes". Because without them doing a job is *too easy* for him. Garrett wearing hard soled shoes that make a lot of noise when he walks is his way of giving himself a challenge becaus ethe only way he can find excitement in his work is to challenge himself. Like those people who say "I've beaten FF8 using only limit breaks with a single character and no items and no upgrades" You might look at them and think "Seriously?" But for that person it's fun. Similarly Garrett finds it fun to rob people blind while wearing hard soled shoes when he could just as easily go barefoot and not make a sound. It's his way of sticking a finger up at the guards and saying "Suck on this!"
Thief 4 made him into Batman with a stealing fetish like Catwoman. Someone who doesn't need to steal but does it for fun. Instead of someone who steals just stay fed.
Add to that look at him! What is with this uber-dark, scarred up gaunt-faced looking guy? Look at the artwork for Thief 2, Garrett has a nice face. He looks like a normal human being.
Why the change? Oh, well new-Garrett has to look badass like he's been going to fight club so he looks like a badass cause you don't wanna mess with him!
Garrett is supposed to look like a regular joe because then if someone sees him in a regular kind of setting he looks like a regular person and you don't suspect him of being a criminal. *That's the point*!
Designed by executive committee, I tell you. Just ticking off boxes of what people think they want.
And what annoys me most of all is when you go back to old PC games and the gameplay has so much more versatility. Cause they're not limited by controllers. So you have controls that let you control the character's body and allow for immersing yourself in the role. You can crouch, sure, but you can also lean to the left, right, lean forward and I could go on all day so I'm shutting up.
I just hate when people try to grab at old properties by trying to deliver what they think will be liked.

The new ways of opening safes and disarming traps were good but what really hurt THIEF (2014) was no Stephen Russell, you not playing as the real Garrett, no sword or dagger, the extreme repeating of lines by enemy mooks, rope arrows not attaching to all sorts of wooden surfaces like ceilings, those damn bird cages, the fact that no Hammerites or Pagans or Keepers or even Mechanist remnants are around, the poor quality story, the terrible combat system, and that the universe was changed from a medieval setting with magic and electricity to a Charles Dickens-esque world.

I hate playing Thief 4 because it doesn't have Stephen Russell as the voice of Garrett. Over the years I have played all three Thief games over and over and Stephen Russell has become Garrett to me. Now when I try playing the new game, it just makes me angry every time Garrett speaks. I can understand Russell's voice has aged a bit (not the same deep crisp voice as Garrett from Deadly Shadows even) but he was/is Garrett. Developers make a huge mistake because they essentially created a new game and so they should have named it something else and not Thief.

Metzergernstein The second option - Stephen was cast and confirmed as Garrett early on in development, but for some reason, Square-Enix later decided the motion-capture actor should do the voice, too. Regrettably, this also meant Stephen was effectively kicked out from development. There was a petition going around to bring him back, and he himself sent a message to the community at the Through The Looking Glass forums, but, unfortunately, nothing came out of it and Thief 4 came out with a far inferior voice-over.
I had my hesitations about "emo-Garrett" from this trailer, but the final game could have been so much better just with Stephen's voice. Sigh.

I was absolutely horrified that he wouldn't voice Garrett again, and vowed to not buy the game if he didn't. I was a vociferous advocate of the petition on his behalf. But it didn't matter, he didn't voice Garrett, ruining the character (as I thought at the time).
Then I read about the game, watched the first few videos of a Let's Play of it... what an abomination. What a typical dumbed-down console-fest targetted toward 9-year olds. I'm not a stupid, unthinking child. I have a brain and want to use it. To HELL with this game, to HELL with the unending dumbing-down of EVERY game made. I HAVE A FUCKING BRAIN. Yes, a few, very few games come out that appeal to me (ie. 'Wasteland 2', 'Age of Decadence', a few others in the last 15 years), but the incredible dumbing-down of games in the last 15 or so years is nauseating. I just pray for a blowback. But considering that the more stupid the game, the higher the sales? That blowback, if it comes, will be in the very, very distant future.

+IgnatzKolisch Stop using the cop out that it was dumbed down for consoles. The game sucks because Square and Eidos clearly don't understand what Thief is and tried to be more like a game that was inspired by Thief. Think about that for a minute, they obviously were jealous of the success Dishonored had and instead of focusing in on the clear principles of what a Thief game should be, they made it a triple AAA shitfest. The game would have sucked regardless of what platform it was aimed at.

      Phantom Limb
I actually agree with everything you said there. A lot of people take offence when I talk about appealing to "console kiddies", but some of the GREATEST (and I don't use that word lightly) games ever made were on consoles. Hell, I date back to the Atari 2600, I was born in the '70s, and some of those games still work well even to this day. Greatness in games transcends the year of release, and also the platform of release. You could, in theory, make a great Thief game on any platform. I just tend to use phrases like "dumbed down for the consoles" as a shorthand to describe a laundry list of simplifications and dumbings-downs that goes on in games.
On the bright side, I do think straight-up Great games are still being made. I'm about 7 hours into Grand Theft Auto V right now, and I'm feeling like it's going to end up on my personal list of Great Games. And I'm pretty picky, if I'm to be honest about it. So Greatness (as I see it) is still to be found!
And I really, really dream of a Great Thief game being made once again. But Thief "4" really, really was a shitfest, you're totally right; no matter what platform they released this steaming pile on, it would have sucked llama balls.

There is too much hand holding in this game and i was also mad they took out the mechanical eye.
If they keep the visuals, but got the original team looking glass to do Thief 5 story, stealth engine, in game HUD, etc it would be great and I'm sure Stephen would come right on back.

wow even from that early trailer you could tell that this Game was fucked. "The Night... I own the Night" That definitiv something garett would say and not dialoge from some hack writter who wants to make his own Batman Knock off

Are you sure it's Stephen Russell? It doesn't sound at all like his voice in the first three games.

It's part of the unreleased (leaked) soundtrack by Paul Weir -- it's just called "Cinematic", as far as I'm aware.

I don't like the Series of Unfortunate Events look of this trailer and game.

the game actually looked a bit promising from this trailer, too bad it wasn't in real life

Would have been a lot better with the ability to mod it. The old games are still alive because of modders. This game could have been redone with modding to give us what we wanted, but obviously they don't want people messing with their perfect reboot. They would have made more money because people would buy it for the mods.
