That's very true, no matter how good you get at singing skills, if you're singing without soul, or trying to impress people with your singing skills, it's just an incomplete performance that's easily forgettable, the emotion you convey will stick to the listener for a long time if not forever. Something that should be pointed out to a lot of vocal coaches reacting to Korean singers is that Korean is definitively a breathy language, with heavy aspirations built into certain consonants and speech patterns. Thank you for doing an honest review for IU's Killing Voice. I love how to explain her vocal techniques. Honestly, she's well loved in South Korea, and other parts of the world too. The reason why we love to listen to her is that, you don't need to know the lyrics translation for you to feel her songs. She will deliver the emotion 1000000% -- and like a warm embrace in a cold night, you'll know that she's there, knowing your emotions in a totally distant way possible, but also hearing and listening to your life sentiments. She has never missed a chance to make her UAENA's (IU's fan's club name) feel loved, and heard. I am personally been saved by her music every time I am feeling lonely. But when I listen to her, all I know is that I have someone who is willing to encourage me to keep going, and that life will get better if I hold on a little more. I've watched her concert when she goes on her Asia Tour in the Philippines -- I literally cried countless times because listening to her singing live is a dream come true. Thank you for reading until here.
I love your analysis of her use of consonants & vowels, and her use of breathiness. It is not just style though. You can tell songs with her own lyrics because the sounds she choose form an element of the music in themselves - they'll be flowing or rhythmic, hard or breathy as appropriate. But, even more important, she chooses them always to express the emotion/ideas she wants to put across. It's never accidental or for show.
I’ve been waiting for this since the last IU video you posted! I recommend you to check out her My Sea performance from her concert The Golden Hour. It was a fantastic performance, and My Sea is one of the best IU songs that showcases the true potential of her vocal range and abilities.
I love IU's voice because its nice to take a break from all the extra virbrato sometimes, her voice is very refreshing to here, to me she is the embodiment of spring ❤
thanks for the lovely review! i liked your insights into everything. i love listening to iu's killing voice hehe! great job and looking forward to part 2!!
I enjoyed your review. Thank you. Surprisingly, her vocalization and tone were achieved through practice. She said that her original style was very different in some interviews. If you listen to her debut song Mia(lost child, missing child) in 2008, you can see the difference. she was a gemstone but she put a lot of effort into it herself.
When I think of IU I don‘t think of her as a singer first and foremost. I think of her as a storyteller. She writes her own songs and she uses music and singing as her medium but it‘s all to convey a story. And to me her singing reflects that. It feels like listening to a story. It‘s not „look at me and my belly high note“, it‘s more subtle and she not at all trying to be this type of singer from what I can tell. I believe that’s what makes her endearing and different to listen to than other artists :) Her stories and her singing feel relatable.
i love watching these videos because even though i don't necessarily want to become a singer, i love knowing all of the things that professionals do, so thank you so much for explaining everything!
IU was sick with rhinitis, thus her nasally voice. She has many type of voice/style and she developed her breathy style of singing because she wanted to differentiate from other singers in order to stand out. As you noticed she sings high notes effortlessly which you can see her sing Good Day with the signature triple high notes. That was the song that propelled her to the top.
She was sick yes, but her voice is nasally regardless. As for the Good Day part, it was not “effortless” as you say, considering she had to stop performing it because it was ruining her voice. She could not sustainably continue singing that song, to the point where her doctors even advised her to stop singing it.
@@getem7640Her voice is not as nasally as it was in killing voice, I noticed the difference straight away. She still did good but in no way compares to her usual performances. IU has a very clear tone.
@@dangchauanh she did not perform it as often as she used to. That’s the whole point. If she sang it as often, she would have completely ruined her voice. There wasn’t a single performance where she was able to sustainably sing the song.
YES! YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! I'VE BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! also for some context, IU was sick with a little bit of cold :") but she still KILLED it. Also, there's subtitles in english! It would be great to see context! :D
You have no idea how happy I am that you guys did a reaction to IU on Killing Voice. I put it on daily cause it's just so good! Have been on a binge watch of all your videos and really enjoying the learning journey 🥰
IU IS THE QUEEN OF KPOP. She's a singer song-writer and mostly famous for her diverse genres, (especially korean music from the 80s and 90s), and emotions as well as very ambiguous, poetic lyricism. Also, she wasn't feeling awkward singing a song she wrote in her 20s I think because of the language barrier you guys perhaps misunderstood the atmosphere. It was more just nervousness of starting, I believe. She was the one who made Killing Voice very famous and after her, more famous artists started to appear in the show.
IU is really the queen of kpop, she is so talented and also produces her own songs. Her vocal skills may not be the best ( even though also very very good x10) , but definitely make the audience want to keep replaying the song. Its very pleasant voice to hear.
I think u guys misunderstood what IU was saying when she said she was awkward. I'm sure for someone like IU who has sell out concerts every single day... she has the confidence to sing for her audience no matter how she felt that day... What she meant was singing songs which she wrote in her early twenties; about her early twenties, when she was approaching her 30s that was awkward.
Oh for sure!!! I think our main goal was to just make a note for people who aren’t world rebound vocalists to present themselves with confidence!! We know IU is the real deal 😎
@@RDJSR1I think you might need to tone down the negativity here. They're vocal coaches, and their always looking for good excuses to help pass on advice to people.
Please do react to Taeyeon and Ailee's Killing Voice as well!! T-T And I think these two (Taeyeon & Ailee) will give you two a different perspective of how different IU sings from the way Taeyeon and Ailee sings, as Taeyeon and Ailee are such powerful vocalists and yet more like pop classical where they use their head voice without going into a whispery territory unlike IU. You're very much right in the sense that IU does a lot of these very stylistic whisper-singing in a lot of her songs, she's a very stylistic singer due to the type of songs she often composes and writes, which aim to speak to an audience intimately hehe : Like, for example, 밤편지, which was written to be almost like a diary exploring how love would truly be like or what defines love. She does all these very introspective songs, and speaks a lot to herself and her audience, which is probably why she chose the very stylistic way of singing
In terms of sustainability i can totally see what you guys mean with that hiss of air being there often. she has had 8 concert tours so far in her career where the longest had 13 shows. Her concerts are really long. The last concert she had called the golden hour under the orange sun lasted for 3hours and 30 minutes. she performed around 30 songs on that concert wich is a normal amount of songs for her shows. she once in one of her pallette interviews that she does not strain her voice while singing. anw loved you video and thanks so much for reacting to this queen.
A few of her songs are interconnected, she does talk to herself. Past questions of songs get answered in future lyrics like a decade later. Shes a big fan of time travel and multiverse/dimensions. She adds those concepts in lyrics and MV
IU wrote most of her songs, and she said in an interview once that she've chosen the words (on her lyrics) carefully according to the meaning and the sounds too. So I think that's why you said that her pronounciation/enunciation skills is up there. She knows fully her vocal and how it sounded and utilize it fully along with her songwriting skills. I think it's one of her advantages as a singer-songwriter. Btw thank you so much for the insight and breakdown. Always love your reaction ❤
Korea loves her clear soft light voice😅 if you hear 7-80’s korea songs, you’ll know the sounds like speaking,whisper,no-technique voices and koreans love that styles of music
She has soft yet powerful voice. No one can tell at first she was suffering a bad cold that day. Why didn't you have turned on English subtitles. You have missed a beautiful journey of lyrics in through the night song. As a uaena thanks for reaction and I'll come back for part two.
yes yes yesss IU is really a sweetheart. She really is talented and humble. Her voice always calms me down. My fav idol! Thanks! Maybe you can react to another Korean singer's Killing Voice; Hwang Chi Yeul. I think he is one of the talented yet underrated Korean singer. Thanks !
Thanks for all of your singing insights. I like the way you offer little teaching moments for the audience rather than criticisms of the singing. I did want to say the the whisper-singing is definitely a style choice. I've heard other idols call it the 50% air voice, and I think it was popularized by a singer in one of the previous kpop generations.
Might be fun to check out the songs “Through The Night” and “Palette” again. I’m slighty biased as that are my favorite songs or hers tho😂 The whispy, airy voice she has is basically what she’s known for, but i would be interested to see if the huskyness(?) in her voice is the same as in Killing Voice in a different performance of hers
😍 You did it!! Covering one of my fav artist IU 💜 Love how u guys immediately noticed the interesting way she enunciates her word/phrasing. Because it's not just the difference in the language, shes still very much rounding/curving her pronunciation so it's very cool Chase picked up on it and Melia expanded on it without uguys knowing the Korean language. Cant wait for part II looking forward to it!!
I'm only two third into the vid so i might end up eating my words, but hey, it sounds like you guys came in with expectations of popular singer = powerful explosive voice. Thats why you guys kept mentioning about "waiting for something to happen". She's popular in korea and in the kpop community not becos of the common western type of scream-shout voice. Her voice is great, her pronunciation is smth older folks love to praise, but most importantly it's the person she is. She's famously a very kind person and well liked not just by fans but also by the industry. Her songs' lyrics touch hearts of many. She has built a good reputation throughout this more than 10years of career. She tops charts not becos she sounds like adele or someone else, but becos of who she is - IU.

@@dkdlrhdi Why in the world would her team deny that she is a singer and songwriter?! All the songs she has penned have her name to the credits. And only antis really believe in that ridiculous “plagiarism” crap. They’ve been trying to bring IU down from the start. People who believe them are contributing to the rumors, as well. IU is a singer, songwriter, composer and producer. Evidenced by Palette and Chat-shire album.
@@dkdlrhdi Did you actually watch the plagiarism claim videos? None of them actually sounded like plagiarism. The channels seemed to just have a vendetta. They tried to say 'Coin' plagiarized Seventeen's 'Aju Nice" of all songs. I don't know about you but that automatically makes me doubt that they had any legitimate belief in any of their accusations.
13:23 IU is singing two separate consonants in Korean. She sings clearly which is why you're picking up on it but the reasoning is wrong. You're comparing 코 to 고. ㅋ is closer to a k sound while ㄱ is closer to a k mixed with a g sound. ㄱ, ㄲ, and ㅋ sound similar other than emphasis or consonant phrasing compared to the English language. ㄱ is similar to how you pronounce Gee (the butter food product), ㄲ is similar to the CK at the end of Clack, and ㅋ is similar to the c in Cow. Example is Jungkook. His name is 정국. It's actually pronounced Jung Gook but you stop the airflow with the back of your tongue at the end of Gook so there isn't a kuh sound that escapes with any extra air.
Other singers do play with changing the delivery of their consonants though which can make listening to some Korean songs hard without the lyrics in front of them since it changes the entire word. IU might also do that sometimes, haven't paid attention, but just at the moment that was picked out, it wasn't the case.
Following UA-cam links I ran across IU's "Eight" MV (prod by Suga) which is actually about three years ago. One thing that I never got answered was something about her clothes. During the dream sequences, she wears a long gown and also a burgundy sweater. They do not look like IU's usual clothes. They look like "Sulli's" clothes. It is believed that the song was mainly about Jonghyun and Sulli. Hara was probably still alive when IU wrote the song. About her balance of nasality, I really don't notice it, and I don't know why. I think it might be because it more common in oriental singing. I have heard it in Japanese and Korean classical singing. I'm not sure about Chinese. There are so many possible "Chinese classical" styles, I can't really get a feeling for them.
She is a petite person, and her sounds have less volume, but she has such great pitch accuracy and range, and she has phrasing and the list goes on. She also was a singer song writer and played her own songs, such a talented musician she is
I personally don’t like the big, strong, loud powerhouse vocals. It gets tiring to listen to easily. I like something soothing, unique and distinct. On top of that, lots of her lyrics moves my soul.
I get that your focus is on the voice aspect of singing, but IU is an interesting case, because she like "rappers" uses the words aspect of singing to great effect. That's why she is called as the "one-top" of Korean Hip-hop by the Korean rappers, though she rarely actual raps. She plays with enunciation of her self written lyrics often inventing new Korean terms to deliver the impact of her songs, rather than much vocal virtuosity. So it is difficult to judge her by the vocal focus. It is like a NBA player who is just average in height, does not have the reach of the tall ones, but is a killer on agility and accuracy, so not many 3-pointers, but still the leader on scoring points - as a rough analogy
Woww I love that I get so many insights from this reaction. Not only I can watch my favourite singer with you guys, but the singing tips will boost my confidence as a bathroom singer 😂🙏🏻

It‘s not „look at me and my belly high note“, it‘s more subtle and she not at all trying to be this type of singer from what I can tell. I believe that’s what makes her endearing and different to listen to than other artists :) Her stories and her singing feel relatable.
Love IU's songs and voice 🥰🥰🥰
i love watching these videos because even though i don't necessarily want to become a singer, i love knowing all of the things that professionals do, so thank you so much for explaining everything!
@@getem7640 She still sing the good day high note in every tour tho, she only "retired" it last year
@@stillfangirlingtoday1468 sure, but her voice is generally nasally to begin with.
@@ChaseandMelia you should just take the hit and not try to defend yourself on this.
@@RDJSR1I think you might need to tone down the negativity here. They're vocal coaches, and their always looking for good excuses to help pass on advice to people.
Her music shows that she thinks a lot about her life, the past, ages are important and like her songs are something she does to remember times.
Please do taeyeon’s killing voice! The start just give me chills!!!!! ☺️
OMG I WAS WAITING FOR THIS!!! thanks you two 🎉❤
Please do react to Taeyeon and Ailee's Killing Voice as well!! She does all these very introspective songs, and speaks a lot to herself and her audience, which is probably why she chose the very stylistic way of singing
as a uaena (IU's fandom) who witness her live back in 2019, she is just absolutely amazing 🥰🥰 you will love her ❤
thank you for this ❤
Wanna hear insane vocals !!
Teayeon and hyolyn
Killing voice ❤
👇
After IU’s I’d definitely recommend Ailee’s killing voice video too! (Had submitted so don’t forget to turn them on if u decide to watch ^^!!!)
Has subtitles * 😭autocorrect really got this wrong
In terms of sustainability i can totally see what you guys mean with that hiss of air being there often.
she has had 8 concert tours so far in her career where the longest had 13 shows.
Her concerts are really long. The last concert she had called the golden hour under the orange sun lasted for 3hours and 30 minutes. she performed around 30 songs on that concert wich is a normal amount of songs for her shows. she once in one of her pallette interviews that she does not strain her voice while singing.
anw loved you video and thanks so much for reacting to this queen.
18:53 incredible vocal on that beautiful song. Leaves me speechless every time I hear it.
I would love to see your reaction to Taeyeon and G-IDLE Killing Voices as well if you ever find the time!
Yay!!!!! IU is one of my favorite Korean artists 💜
Hynn Killing Voice is also a must-watch! She's a diva!
Queen of vocals
So happy you finally reacted to IU’s Killing Voice performance! Was wishing for this for a long time ❤
Killing voice Taeyeon version, you re going to love it 😊
Now I’m very excited for the day you guys react to taeyeon’s killing voice
She is a living legend.
Tayeon and ailees killing voices videos are equally insane😅😂
Korea loves her clear soft light voice😅 if you hear 7-80’s korea songs, you’ll know the sounds like speaking,whisper,no-technique voices and koreans love that styles of music
Looking forward to your reaction to Taeyeon's killing voice performance. She's also one of the best. ☺
I love IU's voice. Especially her ballad songs. Taeyeon Killing voice next please
She has soft yet powerful voice. No one can tell at first she was suffering a bad cold that day. Why didn't you have turned on English subtitles. You have missed a beautiful journey of lyrics in through the night song. As a uaena thanks for reaction and I'll come back for part two.
They had subs on. They commented about how she discussed the songs she made in her early 20s and they also commented on her lyrics on palette
RE genre: Some of IU's older songs are whimsical, fairytale type...
RE her vocal type: nasal+airy most of the time... its her trademark tone
yes yes yesss
IU is really a sweetheart.
I’m slighty biased as that are my favorite songs or hers tho😂
The whispy, airy voice she has is basically what she’s known for, but i would be interested to see if the huskyness(?) in her voice is the same as in Killing Voice in a different performance of hers
Thank you so much for reaction to iu❤❤
taeyeon's killing voice please🥺
I love how you guys communicate, it reflects so much of your connection! ❤
She sings almost like telling stories and thats what makes her special
Please do a reaction video of Tayeon's Killing Voice ✨✨✨
Waiting for part2😅💜 thankyou for reacting to IU🥰
사랑해요 💜
Love it! Excited that you're doing her killing voice videooooo
Can't wait for part 2😊❤
I NEED THE PART 2
Please react to Forestella, they are crossover quartet group from Korea. They are created through a audition program called Phantom Singer 2 and won the season. It consist of 2 classically trained vocalist, 1 musical actor, and 1 amateur rock singer. They create a lot of cover stage and their renowed cover are: Bohemian Rapsody, Bad Romance, Champions and Shape of You. I really hope to hear your opinions about their technique since half of them are trained opera singers. Thank you
Here are the member usual standing position (lef to right):
Ko Woo-rim (고우림) - bass
Kang Hyung-ho (강형호) - rock, tenor~soprano range
Jo Mingyu (조민규) - leader of Forestella, tenor
Bae Doo-hoon (배두훈) - musical actor, baritone~tenor range
THIS IS A NEED 🫶🏻🥹
Yess!!! ❤❤❤ their most recent cover Legends Never Die also amazing!!
loved ur reaction! letting y’all know they have the eng captions on this video :)
been waiting for this one!!!
Day6 would be an awesome group for you guys to check out, because they sing and play instruments.
21:35
It's so funny how the both of you are falling for IU looking all cute while contemplating her 😂❤ IU does have that charm hahaha❤ (PS: my first ever k-drama that I watched was where she starred in and I really appreciate her both as an actress and singer🥰)
Lyrics are a fundamental part of IU's artistry because she's a SINGER SONGWRITER not a power vocalist.
@@dkdlrhdi you’re right.. makes you a TROLL instead
I will truly come back and wait for part 2. 💜💜💜
Yes, IU been introducing the song thru the year she sing it. It grows with her age
PLS part 2, i love IU
Our queen❤
She stole my heart and intrigued me in dream high 😂❤
same😊
please listen to taeyeon’s killing voice!! i love listening to your analysis and every time you get excited about something i find it so fun
YAYYY THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO IU
Please reaction Taeyeon's Killing Voice and Taeyeon's TOP12 Emotional Singsing!!
Please do teayeon and hyolyn killing voice 🫶🔥
22:05 Oh, we whisperers 😂 We're working on it 💪
finally your reacting to IU
killing voice taeyeon ❤❤🎉
That is literally our goal!!! 🙏🏼
IU is a national little sister of the Korean people.
Waiting for part 2😊👍
Killing voice from HIGHLIGHT next please? 🙏🏻 Thank you! 😊
