Deck the Halls: One of the Most "Awfully Good" Christmas Movies Ever?

- With Christmas Day again on its way, Awfully Good Movies is leaving a plate of rum ham out for Santa and watching Danny DeVito face off against his new neighbor Matthew Broderick in the 2006 “family” “comedy” Deck the Halls!
While It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has made Mr. DeVito a late career icon with the younger generations the past 17 years, the same can’t be said for the movie that came out the same year as Frank Reynolds’ first season on the show. Here, he plays yet another sleazy salesman type who moves into a Massachusetts suburb around December time with his inexplicably hot/young wife Kristin Chenoweth and their daughters, and attempts to do something more profound with his life by dressing his home up in enough Christmas lights to get his home seen from space by a Google Earth knockoff website. (And no, that technically isn’t possible in real life, nor is it something than any human being would want to do with their precious life.)
Little does DeVito know that the local eye doctor across the street (Matthew Broderick) sees a threat to his reputation as the town’s “Christmas Guy”, thus igniting a “light fight” of sorts between the two men. It should be a Christmas Vacation style parody of holiday consumerism and dysfunctional families, but the final product feels more like an American sitcom adaptation of The Banshees of Inisherin-and I don’t mean that as a compliment! Not only do the two men get increasingly ridiculous with their family feud, but the weirdly adult humor in this PG movie is directed with all the comedic grace of a stroke victim getting back up to use the toilet, with The Trashman and Ferris Bueller looking appropriately sad all the way through.
This episode of Awfully Good is written, narrated, and edited by Jesse Shade. Have you seen Deck the Halls? Is it as awful as Jesse says? Let us know in the comments!

It's ironic that Matthew Broderick's character is known as "The Christmas Guy" considering Matthew's actually Jewish.
Even Matthew Broderick knew that his career had hit rock bottom on the set, and never quite recovered.
Price to pay when you commit vehicle manslaughter and get away with it.
Oh boo hoo rich millionaires so embarrassed to make another million....
I remember seeing this in theaters, and not feeling a single thing afterwards. Didn’t love it didn’t hate it, just moved on.
Apathy is the opposite of love, not hatred.
At least it didn’t depress me like Ralph Breaks the Internet or feel me with rage like Dax Shepard’s CHiPs.
Austin S., I too saw this in theaters, & felt the exact same way then, & still do, lol.
Because both the main characters aren’t likeable. You watch this movie and you don’t know who to support and get behind.
If only this was Frank Reynolds vs Ferris Bueller in this holiday film. Now that would be a Christmas classic.
It was said nobody on set had a good time. Devitto flew in to film his scenes to avoid the cast. Broderick was caught "I've hit rock bottom". Have Kristin Davis played your wife that rock bottom?
The mid 2000s was a hard time for Christmas movies with this movie and Christmas With The Kranks a year earlier
The joke about Broderick being uncomfortable in front of the cop who wears ladies panties isn’t “outdated”, men don’t wear ladies panties.
As a massive fan of It’s Always Sunny I was HERE for the constant Frank Reynolds references. This is the my favorite JoBlo video by far
Been a lifelong fan ever since DeVito joined the show, their podcast is fantastic and I hope they do the show for another 17 years.
When I needed him most, he returned!
Glad to see another review, I’ve been waiting patiently for this!
Thank you for this fantastic Christmas treat, Jesse Shade. Perhaps we could see a review on Four Christmases, another bizarre holiday film starring Kristin Chenoweth.
Oof, I did see that one in the theater. Me and my dad felt absolutely nothing afterwards. It might be a bit too mediocre to make for a great review, but I'll never say never.
@@JeonardShadby505I did went to see eregon in december of 2006
What’s wrong with Tubi? It’s pretty much the only streaming service that actually places an emphasis on movies.
Agree!
Tubi is great!
I didn't say anything was wrong with Tubi, just that a lot of crappy movies get dumped on there without any forethought.
Thanks for another great year of videos Jesse, Happy Holidays.
The cutaways made this your best video yet. I was laughing hysterically at all the It’s Always Sunny references including an actual homage to the title card sequence. Add to it I waited nervously for a Cable Guy reference and was rewarded with a tie in to Broderick taking on 2 former Batman villains in this and that 🤣
Only cutaways missing were the reference to Devito being out of his league with Chenowith(cut to Family Guy “how do you think Danny Devito got Rhea Pearlman to marry him”) and the Broderick speed skating outfit instead of Oompa Loompa should’ve cut to “stupid sexy Flanders”(nothing at all…)
The line about Disney plus day was repeated right? It’s not me going nuts?
That's because it's a sneak peek of the episode to come. We've been putting them in front of our videos the past few months.
Oh. I’ve been up since 4.30 am my brain don’t work so good.
This is the level of bad that sticks with you. Not so bad it’s good. Just bad bad.
Missed opportunity not calling it Toejam AND Earl Day Jesse. Respect the Genesis/Mega Drive
There was one scene in This movie that mentally made me feel uncomfortable. It was when Danny Devito's character was rubbing Matthew Broderick's stomach after he woke up.
Corny as it is.. I love this movie.
Great gem of a Xmas cinematic treat+DeVito is a laugh riot in this movie! Thanks for sharing and have a merry Christmas!
Another fantastic vid Jesse and happy holidays
I remember the son was reading One Piece in one scene. Thankfully One Piece Red was in Theaters this past year and really good.
Oh Deck theHalls, slightly above Christmas with the Kranks in my opinion as this thing is so sadistic it becomes insane. I kind of respect it’s awfulness.
The biggest problem with this movie Is that there’s no character to get behind. Broderick is retentive obsessive and not very nice . Devito was an obnoxious little thief.
The audience don’t really know who to get behind because both the main characters aren’t very nice.
Brodericks wife has special needs. Or she’s played like she has special needs. And it’s hard to believe devito wife’s and daughters
7:47 I swear that I look for this Rocky clip every Christmas movie review or whatever that mentions a reindeer
12:54 dude, how were you able to make that connection, it is brilliant, I don't know how I didn't see that before!
Christmas with the Kranks and this are without two of the worst christmas movies ever made.
Since this review is heavy on memes you missed Garry Chalk is the voice of optimus Primal
Deck the Halls is currently streaming on STARZ (which is a disney company.)
Lionsgate owns Starz
That is star
It is a staple Xmas film here. That and the cannibal women in the avocado jungle of death. Don't watch anything absurd if you got a stick up butt.
That backing out of the driveway is gold !
Next Christmas, you should do CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS. The only good thing about that movie was Jamie Lee Curtis in a bikini… even though it’s unfortunately the last time we see her wear one.
Actually he was gonna review the 2015's christmas eve staring napoleon dynamite
@@arielfangirlmendez I’ve never heard of that one.
@@CodyFairlessLeeIt was produced by larry king
I remember a movie reviewer, in the mid-2000, saying that the early 2000s Christmas movies where the worst ever.
yet we still watch them😉✌️
Please please PLEASE, can you do some of the “classics” like Showgirls or The Room!?!
How exactly does a 4-10" car salesman get a trophy wife like that?
He is a rich car salesman
Jesse you are so fucking funny. Never stop doing these.
I remember saw this movie in theaters when I was 9 and I hate it but I honestly do like Danny DeVito and Matthew broadrick
This is honestly one of the worst Christmas movies I've ever seen
9:53 no, but I am 😂
Please cover Ben afflecks surving Christmas it makes this look like a master piece lol
Gonna have to wait until next year! We’ll see if the inspiration strikes Jesse.
@@JoBloOriginals It might! I'm certainly open to it.
This movie should’ve been pg-13
This movie ain't streaming on Disney+, but it IS free to watch on UA-cam.
3:00 we know he wants to play The Mole Man so badly so he get some of the She Hulk loving
This and kranks are bad good must watch during Xmas
Those hot wives wasted on such a bad movie. Sad! 😞
Should Tubi add Deck the Halls, it will be a welcome addition over the Xmas selections now.
Did I miss the beginning of the video? It starts with the word “however”
I love this movie
If buddy quits every job how does he get money for the house or the lights? Unemployment?
i love this movie
oh hell no this movie is set in my state?
*I'm a big fan of BOTH Danny Devito and Matthew Broderick. Which may be an added degree of disappointment in this REALLY CRAPPY movie. The characters were poorly written stereotypes, all the plot points were tropes, and the delivery was non-existent, since no momentum was every built up. It was like a one-liner, or a punchline with no joke.*
funny this movie it set in Massachusetts yet filmed in Vancouver.
....in my opinion I love this film...
What a horrible holiday turkey.
funniest christmas for the crazy shit that goes on
I always thought the roles should have been reversed.
Where you been bro? Need more content.
Dude, that is a complicated answer. I got COVID in September and my emotions have gone all over the place since, and my dad's been sick himself. But I'm gonna focus on getting more done in 2023, and that's a promise.
@@JeonardShadby505 get well. You are missed. You and Brumby are the best parts of the JB UA-cam channel. Get to work. 🎅
I'm pretty sure that we literally walked out of the theater when this came out?
Deck the Halls is absolutely crass, obnoxious, and terrible...and it's annual Christmas junk food for me. I love it. Actually watched it two days ago.
Oh man, this review had me ROTFL, & I had way more fun watching this video, & I did actually seeing this turd in theaters! 😆😆😆😁😁😁
Yeah I haven’t seen the movie but after seeing this video I feel like we all got the best Deck the Halls experience possible.
I haven't heard if this movie
Get weird Jesse, really weird.
Did I enter a twilight zone???..... this is a brilliant movie ..... nonsense but fun.

Watched this for the first time in Christmas Eve here in the UK and honestly it was garbage. The critics were right

It’s not the holidays. It’s merry Christmas.
FIRST!
....better be careful saying trans parents may have problems.....
I regret watching this film in theaters. I also regret that Matthew Broderick isn't in better films.
Too bad he doesn’t regret committing vehicular manslaughter.
Holy hell, who did the sound editing here? And what's with the repeat beginning?
You guys are slipping, big time!
