That is awesome. I thought the basket was perfect the way it was, but when you added the leather it really made it look so much more vintage. Well done!!!
I have a few baskets with broken latches that belonged to my husband's grandmother and this is going to be so helpful to prolonging their life! I've also passed by baskets with broken latches at the thrift store since I use them to put up toys and don't want them getting everywhere. This is going to be a huge help! Thank you!
I love how it turned out!! I was so excited when you announced the new series! I thought of something while watching you fasten the brads on the inside of the basket. If you would purchase some really large washers that would have holes just large enough for your brad tails to fit through you could hot glue and e600 the washers into the inner part of your basket. It would give your brads something more substantial to lay against and also would prevent your straps from sliding. It would also prevent your basket from splitting and breaking from the brads rubbing directly on the basket. You could also e600 the brad tails to the washer for more security. I hope this makes sense.🙂
I love the straps, they are perfect for your trunk! I also love, love, love your home! We own a 109 year old 3 story, 5 bedrooms, 3 full bath ( formally) boarding home Just found you, now subscribed 😄 Can't wait to binge watch all the rest of your videos so I can get all kinds of ideas for decorating. It will take us awhile to get it just right bucause my husband and I are in our 70's. We just had it painted and are in the middle of having front and backyard landscaped, next is to redo our deck with some kind of a pergola on top so we can hang light and have my wisteria plant grow up and over! I'm very excited 😁 !!
Sarah, this is so creative and Old English looking! This give the room a "world traveler" feeling, and it's another great way to create antique looking storage. Thanks for sharing!
I was planning on selling a not so old trunk like yours at a garage sale. Now I can’t wait to try the same thing instead! You always have great ideas that end up giving me fantastic light bulb moments. Thank you!
Genius basket trunk look!! It completes it so nicely and fits your decor perfectly. This idea could be replicated on smaller baskets with lids, too. Thanks for sharing.
The trunk looks really beautiful, thank you for such a great idea! I did have a thought - if you wanted to carry on the leather theme, you could wrap the handles with leather string (if you had such a thing to hand!) I love your channel, thanks for all the great content!
I’m definitely going to try this. I have a new sleigh bells on leather (you know the ones like you see at antique shops for like $150 plus?) that this would look amazing on. Thanks for the inspo and tutorial
I love that idea! Recently I purchased a gallon bag filled with large jingle bells for 50 cents at a thrift store. I'll try this with some of them. Thank you.
Oh my gosh what amazing foresight you have! I never would have thought of doing this and thought it looked so good before but but now that I see it with the leather I'm like wow!!
It came out so nicely! Great job 👏🏼 I thought I had the very same one but didn’t realize the sweet story behind yours - mine is similar but probably a little smaller and without the pretty handles. One of those new from Target but found at Goodwill finds!
Thank you! Our walls are Magnolia Paint, "Silos White", and the closet doors are Rescue Restore Paint in the color "Paris Flea Market". (amakersstudio.com/collections/rescue-restore-paint/products/paris-flea-market-rescue-restore-paint)
In order to get the belt to lay better when you go around the edge, you can dampen the backside of the belt with a sponge. Then you will want to press it until it dries and that will form it closer to your trunk. Idk if you would be able to temporarily hold it in place with tape???
Those strap buckles tied you bedroom so much more together. And you're an Interior Decorator so you probably knew how that was going to work out. Nice job!
The trunk came out looking super good. I think if I was to do one of these, I would shave just a titch off from the underside of the belts, where they round the the edges. I think it would help it lay nicer, and closer to the trunk, instead of being away from the top and side. This was just a great idea. It took a nice looking trunk, to an awesome looking trunk. Thank you Sarah for doing all the trial and error work so we don't have to. You're great! 🤗
You can buy leather without a “stain” that can be used in this circumstance. It’s not expensive and can be used in sooo many ways. It seems that a little hot glue to anchor it would be sturdier
Really lovely - what a great idea! Somehow the straps just add the perfect touch! Wouldn't this be awesome in a boy's room too? Thanks for doing the trial and error part so that we don't have to!
I have several wicker baskets and I think I'm going to try that on mine but I use mine for storage as well because I moved from a 2500 square foot house to a 1200 square-foot house scrambling to try to find storage space I just don't know where to put things I'm so overwhelmed with the things that I have and not enough space for them do you have any suggestions
Hi Linda! I use this trunk for storage, too! The straps are still functional for opening and closing, so it will just take a second to un-strap them before accessing the contents. I hope you can find some good solutions! I have a blog post and video out about small space solutions that you might find helpful: ua-cam.com/video/0F_fSqTIGWY/v-deo.html, or I also do Power Hour Consultations if you think a one-on-one zoom chat with me would be helpful to find some creative solutions! Linda, I totally hear you! I can get very overwhelmed with storage as well 🙃 take your time and make priority of items. I also will step way for awhile then come back with a clear mind. Downsizing can be hard but it also can be very freeing.... ❤

Yay! My first time being the first comment. 😊 The straps look great! Did you go dow the back with the straps mounted on top? Super cute idea! Thanks for sharing!💝
I only went down the back a few inches, similar to the overlap I did on the bottom strap at the base of the trunk! I always keep it against our bed or a wall, so I wasn't worried about continuing the straps down. If you knew you'd be moving the truck or having it as a coffee table or something, you could certainly continue the strap down the entire back and finish it underneath. :)
Awesome. I don't know why you sanded down the belts then put a dark color on them That's just me. I loved the look when you sanded them. Again, just me. This tutorial was easy and trunks like shown are e-z to find. TFS
Sanding helped give the belt itself some visual texture before I changed the color! I knew I wanted them darker, but I didn't want them plain, I was really after that worn, textured look which the sanding helped achieve! And then the wax brought in the dark color. Hope that helps explain my process!
I actually preferred it as the original, but that’s ok everyone loves something different. If it makes you happy then do what you love. Looks way more safari looking to me now

It’s amazing how just adding two buckle straps gives a regular basket one with a story and an intriguing interest.
Agreed!
Wow 😯 love it! I just thrifted a picnic basket with leather straps! I think I will age them more using this technique thank you for sharing!
The basket turned out great! Can’t wait to see what you do with your piano.
I had a wicker trunk just like this at the foot of my bed. The straps and buckles really make it pop 😍 love it.
Looks great! Amazing how something so small can make such an impact. As the saying goes, it’s all in the details.
It looks great!
Wow that really set the basket off!! Beautiful 😍
I love the way you are so particular about the little things like the distance of the straps because I am that way with all my projects.

If the brads work loose, I would suggest using a flat washer with a center hole diameter about the same size as the Brad legs width.
