One of my friends mains ike and i started playing him more because of him and while a pretty basic character fot the most part his moves are really satisfying to hit like the forward smash also congrats on the top 8 hopefully it happens more often with more characters
Glad you managed to turn that frown upside down with Ike because he's SO satisfying to play! :D Especially after playing better swordies, my only real gripe is his grab range, it's just so unreliable. I loved playing him as a grappler in Smash 4 :(
I'm a casual player and Ike is one of my mains. It was really satisfying to see someone put into words the way I feel Ike plays. Definitely a force of nature with range, juggles and power behind his attacks when he's in the middle of the stage but sucks when he gets thrown off it.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I may never main Ike because I love so many other characters, I prefer other swordies, but he is one of the best characters for checking up on fundies and getting you into the competitive mindset if you've taken a break from smash if you need a jumpstart getting back into the game. Quite often I'll go play some other characters when I come back from a break, but then a few matches with Ike just kinda refreshes everything and it becomes easy to improve again. He's just incredibly basic with tools that are pretty standard for the cast (minus big disjoint and counter). Most characters in the game has some nonsense gimmick that gets you distracted by that, or they are absurdly strong/weak in some area that makes you play in a different way. Like even other fundies characters it's hard for me to recommend over him because Mario is really good and has some cheese with him, also most characters I prefer to play don't have stubby range like he does. Wolf feels very fundamental, but he just gets rewarded waaaay too much for what he does in my experience to the point that his strength lets you get away with a lot of shenanigans. Lucina is a good pick, but a lot of times I feel like Lucina is fast enough I can kinda overwhelm people with her speed (not to the extent of fox/sonic of course, but it still overwhelming). The Pits are the only others that come close because they are the most average in the roster, being dragged down only because their specials can be a bit cheesy in some scenarios, and multiple jumps. It's reasons like this that make me want to duo-main. One character to get me in the right mental state due to them requiring good decisions to be playable, and the other that is just kinda stupidly strong that gets buffed from that mindset since they just have better tools.
Your journey with Ike feels similar to mine except for the fact that I used to main Ike in Smash 4. I started Ultimate with Ike and the Belmonts and something about how Ike played in Ultimate bugged me at first. It wasn't until recently that I tried him out once more. I got my ass kicked a whole bunch and then I thought about how I should play differently. After that, I actually started doing better. He's still not my main in Ultimate, but it felt good getting back into liking Ike.
That's more or less my story with Marth haha. Mained him in 4 but did not like him in Ultimate until I tried him again years later. The buffs definitely helped but now I'm actually good with the engine of ultimate which helped me get better with Marth again.
I played Ike in brawl and sm4sh but it was a difficult adjustment to this version of him. It was also v surprising seeing him as a meta character all those years ago. I grew v attached to the neutral tools he had in sm4sh, even if they were mediocre lol
Yeah. I feel like there's more sauce to be squeezed out of Ike. I don't think he deserves such a low spot on the tier list. You made me wanna try my hand at my first local tournament, honestly. I'll have to check it out online. I've been fighting lvl 9 cpu's for this one moment, lol.
Local tournaments are where you'll make your favorite memories in Smash. Getting to meet people who also love this game is a great way to make friends. And playing offline is so much better than online lol.
We like Ike! I just discovered this series, so of course I had to check out this video to see what you thought of my main since Brawl. It makes me happy to see people pick up Ike and have a good time, and I'm glad you grew to have a lot of fun playing him despite how rough it can be sometimes! Heck, in such a short time, you've clearly surpassed my own skill with Ike and his combos, although I've always been a casual player and never lab things out. I very much enjoyed this video, as it's a very good showcase of what it's like to use Ike as a fighter! Extra props for the montage; it's super hard to make Ike look even slightly flashy! Haha! Good luck on your character journey!
Thank you so much! Ike was a struggle but I persevered and came out of it in love with him. I'm glad I was able to make a video a fellow Ike main could enjoy!
Just found your channel with this and it was a fun watch, as an Ike main I laughed during the segment where you complained about his grab (It's ass). I'm going to subscribe and if ever you wanna revisit Ike in more depth I'll be happy to help (I'm a PR Ike player from Canada).
I've gotten the chance to play Cloud already! (He's the next character after Piranha Plant.) Cloud is the better "guy with big sword" but I think the video might still surprise you.
Ike is pretty fun to play! However due to his bad disadvantage state and speed i prefer sword characters a little faster like Marth. It's insanely easy to steal stocks as Ike, however its also just as easy to get ur stocks stolen lmao. Congrats for hitting top 8 at a local!
Thank you. Ike is really fun but I used to be a Marth main so there's some overlap but I do really like how easy it is to recover with Marth over Ike lol
It's an exceptional move. If you do your side-b at the right height to cancel it and then just immediately run in with a dash attack it can catch a lot of people off guard.
Ike’s grab is ABYSMAL, all of us Ike players do joke about it and say he has T-Rex hands. But Ike doesn’t rely on combos to win games. Sure, he has kill confirms and gets a lot of stray hits, but he’s not a character like Greninja or Sheik. Sheik really isn’t that bad for Ike, I took a game off Valiant’s Sheik last year in my first local and I went 2-2 and took 17th out of 38 people. That was March 28th.
Tora is currently turning up as the best woman smash player as all time. She's been top 8ing with Ike recently and is very consistent. Ike is also underrated. Nair, side b, Dtilt, aether cements him as a high tier I think you should main him
I’ve always liked this guy. He’s 50/50 the character. Am I gonna nair you, or am I gonna tomahawk grab downthrow you? Ooooohhhhhhh scary(but it actually was)
Imagine Ike being one of the slowest characters in the game and Sakurai looking at him and going " You know how we should buff him? Make his unsafe moves kill even earlier :)".
Sad thing is both Ike and Byleth are fast in FE. And Ike even has a projectie attack in Radient Dawn, which is kinda sad seeing Cloud has one and not Ike. :/

the issue with Ike is half the roster, if the opponent knows the MU, can edge guard him so hard, if you're off stage once you're dead. This is heavily emphasized by knowing the MU, I've played so many people online that just don't know MU and don't win but my area has tons of ikes and can counter him hard. The other main issue is what you said at the beginning, despite looking simple, he has lots of nuances. the issue with this is the reason he looks simple is the his neutral is literally just nair and d-tilt, with a bonus of bair and fair for quick hits but no combos, and he is nuanced because the follow ups vary so much and we have to change up into back end nair at high percents which is even slower. nair on shield is super punishable by most of the cast and d-tilt is just meh, and since ike isn't necessarily fast he just cant win neutral often if your opponent keeps their distance. then we have his more niche data. grab is tiny, air dodge is slow, OOS sucks with aether being the only option but it doesn't work on 99% of common neutral moves, dash attack is our only way to kill on the ground and its slow and can be punished hard. The only half decent thing abt ike is his MU spread to a degree. we have even match-ups vs kazuya and steve slight minus against G&W, making the most annoying char (outside of sonic) playable and then go even against random high tiers. outside of those MUs tho, every other top/high tier SCREWS US UP. Overall the amount of effort that goes into playing ike just ends up not being worth it once you get to a high enough level. We're not allowed to recover against half the roster and if we are its usually a 50/50 on random mix ups we HAVE to do and neutral is just way too projected and then has difficulty with follow ups. I love ike and I've wanted him to be good for years but after so long I cant deny this character is kinda shit.
