Peter... as an older, retired photographer, I really appreciate your endless encouragement of young, budding photographers! No matter what, you always find something positive or encouraging. You are making a difference in some young persons life. Thank you for ‘paying it forward’. You’re a bright spot in the profession. Bless you!
Personally I didn't go to follow any of these photographers. My complaint is that everybody is after the exact same look - Instagram these days isn't about finding your own personal style, it's about conforming to what everybody else is doing: Making half the colours orange and the rest blue. If you want my interest (not that it's valuable) you'll have to do something other than be another cookie cutter outdoor photographer like the accounts featured in this video. I won't say they're not good at what they do, but there's very little that separates them from the thousands (millions?) of other accounts by hardworking photographers who can competently do post processing. Cheers!
I 100% agree with this. Stop being an Instagram photographer and try to create timeless work instead. Teal & orange will die out eventually and then your entire grid will be outdated as hell.
I reaaaally feel what you're saying, but there was one account I'd consider following actually. @kasperhoglund didn't follow the colour theme you were relating to, I find his style much more unique than the others.
Agree! You can check profile @insta_repeat where somebody create collages of exactlty the same photos made by different photographers with 'style' and 'creativity' 😅 This profile show exactly what you talking about.
I just (temporarily) quit instagram so that I could rewire my brain to create things with a unique sense of originality. The problem for me is, like most of the other people here mentioned, I get extremely cynical when I see photos and 'grids' of accounts that are largely the same format - adhering to the idea that its becoming easier and easier to qualify as a photographer by taking the exact same photo at the exact same location with the exact same edit. Even by blocking this out consciously (never looking at the explore page and spending less time time on the app), I still get a sense that I'm being subconsciously influenced to photograph in the same way millions of others do because of "what works". And what works on instagram is being unrealistically portrayed by the numbers of likes and engagement a photo gets. When shooting primarily for the attention and recognition of social media following, the attractive path to take is the one that gives you the short term success you crave. This is the smooth, easy path where your work ends up having no soul and no unique part of yourself. The other path is the rocky, unpredictable one that you more or less have to make yourself. This latter path is much harder and will take a lot more time, effort and *patience*. But it will grow to define you as you put every bit of yourself in it, which will come through in your work. I am currently on this second path. However, unsure of where it will take me. Which path will you take?

I participated in this and found out just how hard it is to transition. I didn’t really have that many fall photos when I started but I wanted to transition from dark to light. Because for me, there is a time between all the fall colors and winter that is just dark grey and colorless. I am going to continue with the grid as it forces me to think outside of only what is a great picture. You have to challenge yourself to become better.

Hey Peter, quick question... I understand that a cohesive Instagram grid is very appealing for new followers, but what would you recommend for a video production company's Instagram grid? We don't always shoot the same kind of content, and each project looks wildly different, even when we use similar LUTs for color grading. How would you recommend making a cohesive grid when your work all looks so different? Thanks!

I love this series as it gave me a push to try and keep a theme for even just a month...but as much as much as you look at “small instagrams” the EVEN smaller ones with maybe under 1000 even get swallowed up and I wonder if you take a look in any of them or dig for those? Still love this it kept me on track for about a month (can’t keep a grid like this forever though lmao i travel too much and end up with a mix of tropical warm photos I love and want to post ASAP in the dead of winter)
This video is sick! Side note.. Dominik gained another follower after this video. Side note #2.. I find it such a challenge to fall (no pun intended) into these season challenges as the country where I live doesn't have drastic changes at all. It's either fairly hot or mildly cold. No extremes of any season.. Which makes it a comfortable place to live but a difficult place to photograph as the seasons don't have a major impact on the environment. Pair that with being in the opposite hemisphere means that while you guys are suffering with -20C, I am walking around in 32C..
