If there is a greater musical talent than Clint Black, I've yet to see it - and I am not even a fan of country music generally, but the voice, chops, songwriting - he is the absolute full package, a giant for sure. Just awesome music.
@@countrygirlcountrymusiclov5831 Having said that, each and every time I reach for Clint Black's music, I am rewarded with the best in music. What an awesome talent - his band ain't bad, either!
This song was as close to jazz improvisation as Top 40 country music ever got in the '90s, and one of the finest live performances in the history of Late Night With David Letterman.
It basically is jazz solos by the band. It's an old move called "trading fours". One instrument solos for four measures and another follows suit for four measures etc. But this is nothing new since country music basically is a variation of jazz and blues. Clint and his band absolutely killed it as did a Paul. I like to think that Paul jumped at the chance to improv with some real musicians.
After Clint and Hayden, country music pretty much died. Now it ain’t nothing but bro rap with an obligatory banjo, or steel and name dropping George, Merle or Hank.......as if they ever even heard one of their songs. It began going to the crapper when the guitar smasher got overly popular for some strange reason. Clint and the boys are the real deal. Wish on the the studio version of this song, that they would have let it go on and not faded Hayden’s string bending. This is one of the most smokin hot jammin songs in all of music. If they would have run the instrumental out for another couple of minutes, this could have been the sequel to freebird.
You can't believe how hard it is to get everybody to come in at precisely the right time and play such smokin hot riffs, some of them quite short, followed immediately by another wizard, and then another. Trust me, kids, don't try this at home. Perfect! Btw, don't ever sell Paul Shaffer short -- dude can play.... ;-)
Got that right, that band is of immense power. Not a bad player amongst them, and CB is one of the few musicians whose live performances are as flawless and pure as the studio version.
On this day in 1992 {August 9th} "We Tell Ourselves"* by Clint Black peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, for the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks and Dunn... One month later on September 5th, 1992 "We Tell Ourselves" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on the Canadian RPM Country Singles chart, the record it replaced at #1 was "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks and Dunn... Between 1989 and 2008 Clint Black had fifty-two records on the Hot Country Singles chart, twenty-nine made the Top 10 with thirteen reaching #1... Seven of his fifty-two charted records were duets, three with Lisa Hartman Black and one each with Wynonna, Martina McBride, Roy Rogers, and Hank Williams, Jr. Clint Patrick Black celebrated his 58th birthday six months ago on February 4th, 2020... * "We Tell Ourselves" was the first of five of his records to peak at #2... And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, the remainder of the Hot Country Singles' Top 10 on August 9th, 1992: At #3. "Take A Little Trip" by Alabama #4. "I Feel Lucky" by Mary-Chapin Carpenter #5. "I'll Think of Something" by Mark Chesnutt #6. "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight" by Tanya Tucker #7. "This One's Gonna Hurt" by Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt #8. "The River" by Garth Brooks #9. "Runnin' Behind" by Tracy Lawrence #10. "Billy The Kid" by Billy Dean
Damn son, that was just flawless! Mr. Black was firing on all cylinders here, and those backing vocals trio were rockin!! Even Mr. Shaffer was burnin' up that piano! That Steel guitar and fiddle player tho...love it.
Just a minor correction. "Late Show with David Letterman" didn't debut on CBS until August 1993, so this appearance was on NBC's "Late Night with David Letterman." Clint mentions here that the new album "will come out next Tuesday," and "The Hard Way" was released on Tuesday July 14, 1992.
I recently saw Clint Black in 2017 at the ho chunk casino in WI, and watching him, Hayden and the fiddle player trade solos on this song was absolutely breathtaking. Great show , was just as good as when I saw him in 2002.
Clint and Nicholas!!! What a team of incredible songwriters/performers. Great guitar playing Nicholas. This Nightlife...another song performed on Letterman....has even more brilliant guitar work. I think I have all of Clint Black's CD's. Each one is great. What a legacy.
Clint and Hayden Nicholas are great in this one as is the violin player, the steel guitarist and the piano player. The three gals singing backup as fantastic as well. I am stuck on watching this video pert-near every morning. If this is country, I consider myself a country music fan. The drummer shouldn't be left out of the accolades, either, the drums sound great! Jason Isbell is one I really love listening to, also, he is really pretty much playing Americana music and he can play a mean lead and slide guitar as well, honing his guitar skills while a member of the Drive-By Truckers.
Bass player is bad ass! Watch this again and just concentrate on the bass and watch him perform. Bass players are so unselfish and are too often ignored. As are the backup singers. And these three backup singers are freaking incredible!
I've been searching in vain forever for a clip of Clint Black on the short-lived Greg Kinnear late-night program where Clint came out - alone - and sang "Happiness Alone". He played solo with an acoustic guitar, and I watched it live. It was stellar. There must be a clip somewhere that exists. It needs to be uploaded for folks to see.... it was that good.
@@tntkop I know. I've seen it. But today there's one guy playing acoustic guitar, fiddle, and a lap (not pedal) steel. That huge sound and multi-instrument interplay is a little less now.
Hayden, maybe you can help me with this. I was looking for a performance which I thought was on Letterman where Clint was just the harp player in the band, wearing a baseball cap. I am a harp player, but I don't think most people realize what a good harp player Clint is. Obviously you would. I'm going to really appreciate it if you can help with this, and the world deserves to know about this unusual talent.
What a stellar performance! @Hayden Nicholas, did you play guitar on the studio version of this or was it Dann Huff? Either way, amazing playing on this live version and kudos for co-writing one of the best songs of that era.
Who cares I like seeing him without it just like in the video for When My Ship Comes In besides loving Clint that's one of my favorite songs of his and favorite video because I love seeing him without his hat on!!!!
Great song. Love it. Good performance here. Who is playing piano? His guy, or the studio guy (forget his name)? Nice solos! The song is energizing to those of who tried too hard to love the wrong person.
Man that got the blood moving. Holy Crap what a song. That’s Country Ladies and Gentlemen. Not what your hearing today.
The band was so tight , great job all.

I agree with who said "Clint's best song". Every version of this is beyond great in a different way. Tightest band you will ever see.

Lyrically this song is brilliant. So put fantastic vocals and fantastic music with it….and you’re left with nothing but perfection! Great job Clint!
I think it's Clint's best song, and Hayden is just killer on this. I've watched every version I can find for about 8 years now. Never get tired of it!
pbealle1 ALL of his songs are EQUALLY his best. This is no different
I concur, definitely one his best if not "thee" best!
I have a soft spot for Cadillac Jack Favor in second.
He's got a bunch of classics. Put yourself in my shoes is another one.
Paul Shaffer is going off on the piano, Fantastic
I was 8 when this was filmed
CLINT AND HAYDEN ARE AWESOME AND SO VERY TALENTED
I believe the date was July 11th and I was in studio for this performance. It's the reason that I started listening to country music.

Great! Laser sharp and precise... Almost like studio recording. The best era of country music.

Back when "The late show with David Letterman" was actually worth watching.
Didn't know Clint could play fills like that. Respect
Hey Hayden! Great job!
AMAZING performance. Country music at his best.
Wow! He was rocking that piano!!!
For country this song rocks!
Bass player is bad ass! Watch this again and just concentrate on the bass and watch him perform.

Will is a legend
I love Clint Black so much I wish I was a Fancy Boy.

?550
When they play this in concert, they do go on a lot longer.

Great guitar player!! .I follow you from the first work with Clint... Regards from Barcelona Hayden!!
Well, WOW>
That looks like a CD longbox package that Letterman was holding up in the beginning, wasn't it???
Yes it is
Konnie stratton hearther beautiful kisses love you clint black
Holy shit
What a stellar performance! @Hayden Nicholas, did you play guitar on the studio version of this or was it Dann Huff? Either way, amazing playing on this live version and kudos for co-writing one of the best songs of that era.
I have a quick question: Besides Liana Manis, who are your bg vocalists?
Where's Clints hat??
Jaded Star probably didn’t want to wear it
Maybe he lost lol I was wondering that to
Who cares I like seeing him without it just like in the video for When My Ship Comes In besides loving Clint that's one of my favorite songs of his and favorite video because I love seeing him without his hat on!!!!
Liana Maris on back vocals?
Great song. Love it. Good performance here.
Who is playing piano? His guy, or the studio guy (forget his name)?
Nice solos!
The song is energizing to those of who tried too hard to love the wrong person.
That's Paul Schaffer. The band leader. He killed it.
Yes, that's a long box CD. Not uncommon in those days...
Used more to prevent theft back in the day. A little harder to stuff inside a shirt, coat.
Is that fiddle player named Biff Steel?
Unbearably good. BUT, not enough airtime play to the steel guitar
