Pick Polishing 101

  • Опубліковано 22 лис 2011
  • Polish you pick!!!! You won't believe the difference!!! The only major difference between home brew picks and mass produced pick is the finish. Home brew makers polish their picks to a mirror finish which makes it unbelievably smooth in the lock. Mass produced picks don't have and can be "scratchy" feeling in the lock. Try it out and let me know what you think. Thanks ToolyMcgee for the phone book tip!!!

A 10 yeaar old video -- and yet some of the best advice ever. I purchased a bunch of $2 basic ILCO shallow hooks. The entire stamped edge was rough. After some polishing with 320, 400, then crocus cloth, they are really very easy to use. Thanks. Keep the videos coming!

@PickingPaul1 I use a dremel and a grinder. Use the dremel to cut your pick to length and then grind out the pick. You can use the dremel with a sanding drum also once you get close to the finished shape, easy to take off too much with a grinder.

I buy quality picks, and I make my own picks but I polish everything. There is no reason not to.
Eliminating that false feedback is necessary weather you’re just learning, or you’re picking a challenge lock.
You’re only as good as your tools. And sandpaper is cheap. I personally go all the way to 3000 grit before I buff them with polishing compound.

Great vid thanks for sharing you pick polishing tips, mine are shiny now, still crap at picking but that's because I need to put more time into practicing.

Just polished my hacksaw blade home made picks and was amazed at the difference in the feedback. Great vid. I can feel the pins now and not the pick moving.

Skip to 4:30 to see the actual polishing.
We understand the difference between polished and unpolished. We don't need to spend 5 mins seeing the difference.

I buy from Sparrows mostly and haven't needed to polish any picks. There is a light film on them but there doesn't seem to be any friction. Smooth as a baby's ass.

Great subject and great tip on the phonebook B. I remember telling a LS friend about polishing up an HPC set and was surprised to get questioned by him as to why! The phonebook method will save me skewering my fingers when sanding by hand!

Great video, I assumed that my Southords would come from the factory in perfect condition but looking at them now, I can see all of the tiny ridges and imperfections that you showed. Will be sanding them down soon. Thanks for the top tips.

Good vid Kokomo! Yeah it's good to get those gnarly rough cuts cleaned up, a super hard steel pick can saw out the bottom of a brass keyway pretty quick, especially on your practice locks.

Excellent tips kokomo! I believe that manufacturers could polish the picks if they chose to through vibratory polishing. This way large batches could be done to at least get them to a better state than what they are currently sold. The handles could be added later after the polishing. Vibratory polishing would not be practical for picks after being assembled if they have plastic, foam, or any other non-metal handles since they would probably just become very rough.

I did it. It's a bit strange at first. I am used to having all that extra friction, but I am getting used to it. It sure does look nicer.

Outstanding TUTORIAL Koko mate and will give that a go. I have tried sanding a couple of petersons down with wet and dry, but bust used the paper between my fingers... Def going to try it with a phone book to help, and even have a go at my southords too
    Brilliant video Sir :o))))

What an eye opener that is koko....And the phone book is a great idea....I've stabbed the side of my thumb so many times in the past with blood every fookin where when the pick breaks through the sandpaper...yer a star mate

@zacthebold I get it from the auto parts store. I also normally use 2000 grit paper which I also get at the auto parts store with the bondo and paint.

excellant video koko mate, i think that could be why the southord max-yield picks are soo good, they're heavily polished straight out the pack, thanks for revealing your 'polishing' secrets!! :)

Great video mate. Good to see someone else knows about that Blue Magic. I took mine out recently (to polish some pics) after about 4-5 years in storage and the bottle collapsed on itself but not enough to pop open plus the bottom turned yellow like its burning through it, lol, I also noticed the texture feels a bit more liquidity then the original jelly cream feel I remember. How old is that bottle you got in the video and what the longest you ever had a bottle for? It seems to work fine but making me think a fresher batch may bring more of that mirror shine out. What do you think?

@ 1:38 I said a curse word out loud. Nice polishing. I practiced polished a cheap dull knife i had laying around and the backside of a metal lock and I was amazed at how much of a mirror effect it gave. I have up to 2500 grit that I got from the auto section of walmart. Came with 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500.

The reason I ask is because I bought a sparrows creeper set and their picks have some sort of brass/ gold finish to them

+15Fire I think that coloring is due to those picks being dipped. Polish them and they will be shiny and silver.

Great post! I like the phonebook helper. Is there any reason why you would want to sand the corners of pick? Do you think that would add to touch/feel, diminish pin contact or not really matter?

Hi Kokomolock, great and very helpful vid.I love the 101 series! I have few question: 1.Who made the homebrew with the gold coloured handle? That looks very-very nice.
2.Peterson says you shouldn't sandpaper their picks because the anti rust coating goes away. Did you had any problems with rust on picks? (Specifically peterson picks?)
    3. Isn't it a problem that the pick get thinner by sanding them? Or when I did sand a hook I changed the tip's curve a little bit. Any tips on whot to avoid that?

Be carefull with the grinder, you can heat too much the piece and weaken the steel
