(1216) Review: RavenWorks Signature & 4-Piece Lock Pick Kits

  • I had high hopes for the Signature lock pick kit from RavenWorks, as well as their 4-piece lock pick kits. The selection and variety of picks was outstanding and the case is wonderful. Unfortunately, the metal is quite soft and bends too easily. The kits are nice to look at, but not for using...too bad.

    Guys, if you're interested in a great single pin picking kit, go check out the sparrows monstrum kit. BBill uses the atilla from this exact kit in almost every video. Yes you might have to finish them a little (I didn't need to touch mine) and cut the rubber back a little (I did have to do to mine). Thanks for the great videos and great advice Bosnian Bill.

    Thank you for the great review as always! I have to agree with most, too bad they cut corners on the metal. It's nice that it comes with both top and bottom of the keyway tensioners, but again, too bad they are all 25 thou. Very nice case and add on. Still, would be happy to add it to my arsenal! Good luck everybody!

    Odd about the steel. You can't really heat treat 300-series stainless, but it can be work-hardened. I'd expect the cold roll process to get the steel fairly hard, but obviously that didn't happen here. I'd be curious to see how magnetic the steel is. 300 series stainless isn't very magnetic unless it's been work-hardened.

  • @Jake1973_

    Really like the double ended kit. I'd buy it right now if it was just spring steel, or actual 301....

    Hey bill, I haven't been doing this for that long, but your reviews have been the go to before I purchase any products. Since I've gone through a bunch of different companies, I know what I favor more than others. Everything I've been picking have been locks made in here in the states. What I've come to realize; at least for me; the .023 to .025 thousandth picks seem to big in a lot of cases, even with master locks. I was able to get better pin control with the .015 thousandth Peterson's, but those have been to thin for some of the grittier and/or cheaper American made locks like master. I've switched to the .018 thousandth's as the thickest I've wanted to go with, and that seems to be giving me the best control as well as room to work with. But in some cases those habe been kinda thin, and for the 8 dollar cost of each pick, I don't want to be bowing them out because once they stretch, you can't try to bend it back into place without fatiging the steel and making them even more weak. In order to save the pick itself and to stop them from going into the trash, I started using a small peeking hammer, knocking the curve back out of the pick, and than hammering it down to a thinner pick. It works alright. I'm able to work harden the material a bit. You have any pointers, that can either help me work with the thicker .023 thousandth picks or a company who makes a higher grade .018 thousandth pick that can handle some of the Junkier American made locks? (I'm not talking about the actual company American Locks, just locks that are made here in the states).

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 років тому +1

      Jack, Like you I initially tried to settle on a single thickness pick, and 0.018" was my choice too. After a while I realized that even 0.018" was sometimes too thick or too thin for certain locks. Ultimately, I found that a "thick" pick ranging from 0.022-0.026, and a "thin" measuring 0.015 was necessary. Lately, I've found an "ultra thin" pick measuring 0.013" is also useful in special locks.

  • @andersjjensen
    @andersjjensen 6 років тому

    WOW that metal looked soft! Now, I'm not known to get on my picks like a 200 pound gorilla, but with the way you squashed that pick like lukewarm butter there is no chance in hell it will last when those ASSA barrel spools grab hold of the countermilling!

    301 comes in various grades, and a wide range of tempers. No surprise seeing different reaction to the cppper sulphate on what a vendor is calling 301, or a variety of bending characteristics on various vendor 301 stainless steels.
    301 is just a generic term, like padlocks, you might have a bunch with the same physical outward appearance, one is master, another is an abus. We all know how that ends. =-)

    Hey Bill, do any pick manufacturers use higher grade stainless steel? Like M390, CPM-S30V, S110V, VG-10, etc.? I know these are super steels for knife blades. However, would it be as beneficial for pick steel?

    I literally just bought this exact case (except it doesn't have the logo on it) on Amazon the other day for $4.66 with Amazon Prime to use for this exact reason. This company didn't make these cases. They probably just wholesale ordered them and then printed their logo on them. Just thought I would share, and share the link for anyone that wants one.
    Also, I've already received it and it is extremely well made and high quality.
