- Why are young people so unhappy and so anxious about their future? Healthcare professionals and social scientists round up the usual suspects: drug addiction, social media, cyberbullying, fear of impending demise of the planet. See anything important missing from that list? Dennis Prager does.

Why are so many young people unhappy?
To cite just one example, Reuters reported in 2019 that “Suicidal thinking, severe depression and rates of self-injury among U.S. college students more than doubled over less than a decade.”
And unhappiness is hardly confined to Americans. As the social commentator Kay Hymowitz recently wrote, “Germans are lonely, the bon vivant French are lonely, and even the Scandinavians . . . are lonely. The British prime minister . . . recently appointed a ‘Minister of Loneliness.’”
People have more money, better health, better housing, more education, and live longer than at any time in history, but people-especially the young-are unhappier than at any time since data began to be collected.
Why?
There are any number of reasons: increased drug and opioid addiction, less human interaction because of constant cellphone use, and young people’s fears for their future are the most widely offered explanations. But the biggest reason is the loss of values and meaning.
Let’s begin with values, and I'll focus on America.
The United States was founded on two sets of values: Judeo-Christian and American. This combination created the freest, most opportunity-giving, most affluent country in world history. This is not chauvinism. It is fact. That’s why people from every country on Earth have wanted to emigrate to America-and still do.
Chief among the American values was keeping government as small as possible. This enabled non-governmental institutions-Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Clubs; book clubs; the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; bowling leagues; music societies; and, of course, churches-to provide Americans with friends and to provide the neediest Americans with help. But as government has gotten ever larger, many of these non-governmental groups have dwindled in number or simply disappeared.
Another set of values is referred to as middle class or bourgeois values. These include getting married before having a child, making a family, getting a job, self-discipline, delayed gratification, and patriotism.
All of these have been under attack by America’s elites, with the following results: The majority of births to millennials are to unmarried women. Yet, according to a 2018 Cigna study, single parents are generally the loneliest of Americans. The percentage of American adults who have never been married and who have no children is at an historic high.
Then there is patriotism. Until the 1960s, Americans grew up loving their country, admiring the Founders, and believing in America’s values-most especially, liberty. Americans did not ignore the bad parts of their history, but they were wise enough to recognize that what made America exceptional was not its flaws, which were all universal, but its virtues, which were not. This strong American identity provided generations of Americans with roots, community, optimism, and meaning.
Which brings me to the most important reason for all this unhappiness: a lack of meaning. As Victor Frankl, the renowned Austrian-American psychoanalyst, wrote in his masterpiece, Man’s Search for Meaning, aside from food, the greatest human need is meaning. And nothing has given Americans―or any other people, for that matter―as much meaning as religion. But in the West since World War II, God and religion have been relegated to the dustbin of history. The result is that more than a third of Americans born after 1980 affiliate with no religion. This is unprecedented in American history. And it’s even worse in Europe.

#meatrx.com its worth investigating just how important diet is. i think its >80% try carnivore
And the global Left has planted the seeds for Islamism to take over a disenfranchised godless West
I think religion needs to rebrand itself again. Because what religious people today don't understand is from The 1980s to the 2000s, the young people saw a religion as authoritarian. I had aunts in my family who were very religious and forbade their children from playing video games for example, under religious excuses. Things even as tame as Zelda on the super nintendo were too violent. I remember people wanting to ban Doom because it had satanic imagery and was insanely violent.
I remember people wanting to ban pokemon and Dungeons & Dragons under very much the same pretense.
I live in Kansas City and grew up an hour outside of Topeka, and growing up in the 2000s I remember the Westboro Baptist church very Well as a social threat.
Now you may say that Westboro Baptist church does not represent all christians and that tipper Gore while Christian was a Democrat. You're right.
The problem is optics, and of that, the cultural perception is Republican equals Christian and Christian equals religious authoritarianism about even the most mundane things like Slayer and Pantera
In the modern age, you cannot sell religion because of these issues, so it either must rebrand or you need to find something else. Too many people like I still treat it like snake oil and are extremely suspicious.
Instead of saying #notall, you should have done more to STOP your crazies - they became your public face.
You cannot sell religion to people who feel they have been burnt by it, we need something else or a promise of not overstepping bounds.

A HUGE reason for people to be in depression (and what has given the rising of opioid addiction) is the addiction to pornography. It is a “SPIRITual” addiction.

Before I watch, here are my reasons:
Nihilism - People believe there is no purpose in life
Social Media - People compare the highlights of other people's lives with the worst of theirs
Societal Problems - People believe problems are societal rather than individual and feel helpless in fixing them
Hedonism/Utilitarianism - People live just for happiness and pleasure, but as soon as happiness and pleasure go away, they are left with emptiness
Feminism

@@Sylvertaco Or maybe because this is an important issue that other people are talking about too. Either way, who cares? This is serious.
@@zombieslayer7759 - What matters is that whatever claims are presented, there needs to be support for them regardless of personal view, since that can be biased or conditioned. And since the statistics this video presents do not provide nearly enough to justify the premises and conclusions, I fail see why it has such support other than bias and blind belief.
@@Sylvertaco There's plenty of evidence provided in this video as well as lots of other studies that show that people in my generation are unhappy. It's obvious.

Well, would they be happier if two people where stuck in an abusive and toxic relationship and it made the children's life worse? Yes, having a divorce (especially for chidlren) can be traumatic but it leaves people in a better place than they started
@@ocean6857 Most of the people(predominantly women), filing for divorce in the U.S are doing it for selfish and foolish reasons. No one agrees with staying in an abusive relationship. But that doesn’t seem to be the main problem in terms of divorce in the west.

High schools put enormous pressure on students and still don’t prepare them for college
Who care if it doesn't prepare you for college. It doesn't prepare you for life after you move out of your parents house. Most of the kids dont know how to do taxes, cook, and some barely know how to manage on their own.
I agree. I would love to go to college later on in life instead of straight out of high school. I’m doing fairly well right after high school. I’m in college also but I think I could do pretty well without college
College is a booze cruise all the way. If you want to make money, go into the workforce.
Sword 319 they constantly throw out every program that they thrust on the students and their teachers, place grave importance with terrifying consequences on those programs’ fulfillments, and then, make a complete 180 at the end of the year-abandoning the program that they insist on, using the stick and not the carrot, then it’s zeroed out, never mattered, never happened, data that was to be collected-trashed-
All so they can hire consultants-keep the bureaucracy going-and keep their jobs-and look like they are important, essential, and deserving of more funding-the best example of a bloated government system that guzzles money, and is always hungry for more, than I’ve ever seen-
And so of course students notice. They get stressed, pressured, threatened-and then what they worked so hard towards-no longer even exists-no record of their hard work or creativity to commend them or define their character-they are shown that it’s for nothing.
And we wonder why they don’t care enough to put in the effort to do more than pass? Heck. We don’t even teach them to comprehend basic GPA-
All they know that is consistently important, is that you can’t be held back more than a year, and that if you pass one semester of a class, you can fail the next one without consequence-having no grasp of the consequences and compounding of “just passing”-they don’t trust that their work will be worth anything. Things are so constantly changing. They see the stress of their teachers. They see the insecurity of not knowing what will happen next week-the imbalance between administration and faculty-the fear.
Why would they then trust enough to work hard? Why would they listen to something we stress, like GPA, when we’ve taken everything else from them that we said was important-
Punished them for their hair color. Or piercings. Or tiredness. Being so stressed ourselves, that most teachers don’t even think to take the time to ask a kid “what’s wrong? Are you ok?” When they get confronted or agressed or cussed at in class-teachers instead distance themselves from the humanity and vulnerability of their students-the obvious need for consistency that they need SOMEWHERE in their lives-in a world that we created to be do unpredictable-and we call it progress.
Children crave discipline and structure. Regularity. Empathy. Someone giving a shit.
And we aren’t giving them anything.
We are waiting for someone else higher up to do our jobs for us and give us a better model, until the world seems more stable in our own eyes-sacrificing 3 generations to the toilet, placing our bets and hoping that next year will be more stable for US so that we can do a better job.
And we fail them.
And then judge them like they’re the problem.
Such a let down. . .
They need someone to give it to them straight. Something to depend on that will be the same tomorrow. Something that isn’t disappointment.

Social media ruins people's self-esteem and abilities to connect. I recently went to a birthday dinner and everyone was taking insta-stories of their food and clips of the moment. It looked fun when watching those stories online but in reality the dinner party was boring. Hardly engaging and some of us went home earlier than expected.
It's also so hard to find a good friend these days, there is no sense of community and some of us barely know our neighbours.
I agree, I am on a constant lookout for genuine people and they are harder to find then you think.
Stekiz My mom lives in a small town and the people there are very friendly. Small towns are normally religious so it makes sense. They will strike up a conversation with you, like they’ve known you for years. A woman at the grocery store was talking to my mom like she knew her. I thought they were friends but when we left the store, I asked my mom about her, and she said, it’s the first time I met her. It happens a lot too. 😆
I don't do any of that myself, I do have an FB page mostly to keep in contact with my brother, he is gone now so there is all most no need for me to be on FB. Thou I am in contact with a lot of people who like myself love fly fishing for trout and other game fish! My cell phone is a flip phone for making phone calls. If I didn't have to have a phone I would not have it, I can't stand phones.
Veronica M I 100% agree I grew up in a small town, it was great. Maybe I should start looking into something like that for my future.
FuckYouGoogle I agree, I live in Stockholm and people are so incredibly reserved here. I have started really making a hard effort at hard core engaging with people tho. Reading the signals of the other person of course and leaving them alone if that is the vibe they are giving off. But most of the time it seems like people really appreciate me putting myself out there in a big way they are just scared to do that themselves.
Kids don’t truly know how to develop meaningful relationships anymore.

So true, social media and electronic communication give a false sense of community without real connections. Everything Dennis said was true, I’d add get back to ha going out with people, face to face, and really get to know them.
@Mike M But more kids live with their parents to a much older age. A coworker’s 21 year old son still lives with her. On the one hand, this sounds like a nice family unit, but on the other hand, how is he going to date somebody when he’s got to bring his girlfriend home to the house with his mom and his grandma?
I'm an Atheist.. Yet I can't help agreeing wholeheartedly..
When Hector of Troy was confronted by the vast Spartan army, he declared the three values he had always lived by..
Honor your Gods
Love your woman
Defend your country!!
Let me be clear.. You don't have to have a religion to have Gods.. An enthusiastic humanist believes in upliftment of human condition through generosity and altruism, empathy and equity, love and justice.. Above all, through liberty.. Your Gods don't necessarily have to be Yahweh or Allah, Buddha or Krishna!! Let them be these values you hold so dearly, and hold onto them dearly!!
I don't even have to describe the promiscuous world we live today.. Love, commitment and responsibility are barely more than the words of dictionary.. Too many young lives have their futures cut short due to unwise relationship and parenthood choices..
Instead of having genuine and strong political convictions, people have become pawns of globalist ideologies.. People no longer honor the great predesessors who bled in the battlefields to deliver us from tyranny, took on big empires to win us independence, and died in prisons so that we can vote, go to school, and get a job.. You don't have to love one single country if you don't want to.. But honor the great men and women who won us what we have.. First of all, learn some history!!
Hopefully, you'll remember this, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one cometh unto the Father but through Him.

When I don't freak out over a single D on a test, I can easier accept what I got wrong and get an A on the next test. @@FrangoTraidor That... does never represent the overall price of goods and services. Inflation exists, mate
Inflation does exist, let’s do the math. So for this we are going to be comparing minimum wage and the price of bread. So in 1950, 2 years after mister Prauger here was born, minimum wage was about 70 to 75 cents, and the price of bread was about 10 cents. That means with one hour’s work you could buy about 7 loads of bread. Tax is purposely left out just to make the math a bit more simple. So now, minimum wage is about $7.50 in most states, and bread is about $3. That means with one hours’s work can now only buy you 2 loaves of bread, and even the highest minimum wage, $15, can only buy you 5 loaves of bread per hour.

When you have no moral and spiritual absolutes to guide your life with, a family to love and be loved by, and a country and culture to be proud of; no wonder people will be so depressed, lonely and suicidal.
Why do you need moral and spiritual absolutes? That adds way more stress to life in my opinion. Life is very gray and making a wrong decision doesn't always mean terrible punishment. Family is also important if you have the luxury but sometimes you don't and that's okay too. Even when it comes to your country, it's okay to be proud of it but that doesn't mean you need to ignore its flaws nor act like you are proud of it.
@@eadlynjune No absolutes means confusion and no meaning.
@@jesussknight4918 Just because you don't believe in an absolute truth doesn't mean life has no meaning, though there's no reason life has to have a meaning either. Sometimes there is no definitive answer which creates confusion but that just means you have to think on an issue harder or weigh it out which isn't a bad thing. Being confused if you should have waffles or eggs isn't bad. Being confused if you should get married or not isn't bad. I'm sure there are times when confusion can be bad but it isn't completely bad.

I went to college to become a forest ranger. My parents helped when they could, but I had to work while attending college to support myself and tuition. I worked on the Tahoe, Shasta and Eldorado National Forests. Although I was doing what I thought I wanted to do in life (experiencing nature and being outdoors), something was missing in my life. For me, it was the overwhelming urge to become a mother. I wanted a family to experience life with. I got married and moved to a small town at that time and got a job with a union grocery store. There, I could work PART TIME with good pay and great medical, dental and vision and benefits. I knew I would never become famous or so wealthy with money that I could quit working and I was fine with that, because I knew that a family was my main goal and I knew I could still enjoy nature.I was pretty sure that we would never be rich or live in a mansion, but we would have great times and not have to worry about medical care. I was BLESSED with 5 awesome children and was able to teach my kids respect for the great outdoors, (which is still my passion) by growing a garden every year , many, many camping trips and teaching them about self sacrifice. You see, I fulfilled both my dreams without being “rich” with money. When it comes to wealth in money, I don’t have much. But when it comes to wealth in Love and Life, I am super duper RICH !!! I’m not saying that my job was a walk in the park. 35 years of retail can be very grueling. I wanted to quit my job more times than you can count, but I’m sooooo happy that I did not. I am now reaping my rewards for my hard work and self sacrifice. A close and loving family, Great medical for the rest of my life and a great pension. ( i used to get ridiculed for working at a grocery store) I now can retire and have more time with my family. My children are all their own people, but one thing they do know, is that hard work and self sacrifice CAN bring happiness. Several live off the land and enjoy the simple life and some chose careers that they have a passion for. But all of them know that they ( and only they) are in charge of their own happiness. The Lord has also blessed me with 6 awesome grandchildren. To be Sure.....I had many, many days of doubt in my life about what makes me happy, but the older I get and the more life I experience, I can honestly tell you that God’s love and blessings, friends and family are my happiness. Follow your dreams for sure, and don’t let anyone stop you. If you feel stuck, turn the page and work towards YOUR happiness. Only you, through your perseverance and self sacrifice can achieve what makes YOU happy. May you find all that you’re looking for and more in life my friend. I have a strong feeling you will !!! I think school has a big effect. We need an educational reform, pronto. Kids are just gonna keep growing up and not knowing how to be an adult until it's too late.
I agreed with every point except religion. The reason they were happier was because it was a community they're in. People are probably just as happy as long as other people are there, whether its something simple like a soup kitchen or animal shelter, or something big like charity events, conventions, and amusement parks.
People are happier around other people, period. As a 16 year old that's been having virtual school since March 2020, going back to school in a few weeks, God I miss just being around other people. I would complain about how early I have to get up, the rules I have to follow now, aggravating teachers... but it's so much worse at home. And I love my family, were pretty stable. twalker294 atheist here, what you just said pretty much sums up why i respect religion so much, despite not being able to really believe it. There’s stubborn people that want to force their ideas on others everywhere, don’t pay em any attention. But I'll definitely still have to pay off that loan.
It's almost like there's a system in place that handles money, designed to make it so that I have such little chance of upward class mobility, to the point that I feel like I don't have any control over my life. I'm literally working from sun up to sun down at two jobs I don't like at all, just to make ends meet, all while billionaires.... exist.... that's a thing that's real. It's like there's a system that pays me a set amount of money, yet the labor I perform is putting more into the company than I'm being compensated for and that extra value they don't pay me for is being siphoned off to rich fat cats who got that way by..... owning stuff............
Maybe if I worked harder.... or probably even better if I was just born into a rich family so I could have the start up money required to make myself richer, the same way every (period) billionaire (period) ever (period) did.

The real reason why most young people nowadays are unhappy is because they're working harder with longer hours than their parents, and even their grandparents for sure, and still aren't able to afford college or even an apartment to themselves when and if they're on their own.
The feeling of loneliness is from the fact that most people are too busy working these longer hours, and tend to lose interest in wanting to socialize with others on top of all of the stress and anxiety that comes with working such long hours. The lack of people being religious and patriotic has nothing to do with the ongoing problem of depression among young people, it's the fact it's getting harder and harder for each generation to see a future if they're feeling trapped inbetween minimum wage jobs.
Exactly. While I do admit that I do hold some christian values, I really hate this "Religion will fix all your ailments! Without religion your life has no meaning!" mentality. Having religion might be comforting, but it doesn't do much when someone struggles with a life situation where they are literally unsure if they will live to see another day. Instead of dismissing people by just telling them to "Accept Jesus" we should work on things that will objectively affect our world positively. I really doubt that things like climate change, racism or instable economy can be solved just by praying them away. I mean, there are people in the world who literally have nothing to eat or who live in totalitarian regimes where they have to fear for their very lives.
Try telling them how "getting their values straight" will save them.

I'm a boomer. I was talking to a friend my age about when we were children and the strong sense of community in our neighborhoods and how that has all but disappeared. I miss that.
Alienation. Lack of belonging. Lack of regular socializing. Yep, that'll mess you up.
And constant worrying about how you’re going to live life. And pressure to do well in school and to get a job
Ok boomer.
Then go out and rebuild it, you can you know!
Kip Winner this generation especially. Past generations college was cheaper and easier to get into. State colleges now have like 30% acceptance rate. Not to mention that jobs are extremely hard to find and even with a college degree you could be working at a job that isn’t even your degree.

I am only 12, and I strongly believe that lots of stuff that i've learned in school has made a dent in my mental being. Even though i think you were talking more about college students and high schoolers, but I still feel depressed because it feels like i have no meaning, and it's even worse with COVID-19. Me and my family can barely attend church any more
Where though, USA, EU, Uk, Russia? there are alot of countries
If you think that stuff has made a dent in your mental being, you have no idea, it's not even the tip of the iceberg.
Reality tends to do that, very often.
As a young person, I'm unhappy because I don't have anybody I could talk to.

@@pizzeriaverona3726 I 100% agree with you. I dont know how many times I've told my mom that i have social anxiety and she just laughs and tells me to stop acting stupid. Couple years ago I was a few articles about mental heath and diet. Specifically lack of red meat consumption in mental health patients. I liked that idea, I eat a lot of beef! This makes just as much sense, if not more. I may not attend religious services regularly, but I still have faith. Either way I'm good. I'm more than happy go lucky!

You know we live in a capitalist country right? People are currently sad in a capitalist country. This isn't to say capitalism is inherently bad, though I'd argue it has one of the most glaring flaws of any economic system, but we are under it and not socialism so that isn't really applicable.
The philosopher Epicurus felt that friendship provided the best route for achieving peace of mind and happiness.
No way... Epicurus was dead wrong... My experience is that if you have a handful of real "friends" you are doing more than most. I have been hurt and betrayed more by so-called "friends" than by anyone. And the dilution of the word by big tech means that "friends" are almost worthless. @@FwoGiZ well it is an ancient tradition for PU to think the cure all for the whole world is to be a religious theist even if the whole world by majority are religious theists.

@OhYeah? Theism is to believe in at least one god. Religion is to practice the set of advices given by the tradition developed around that belief, proposed not by said god(s) but by people who were wiser than you and me, who not only discovered something, but something that, in most cases, works pretty well
@FwoGiZ if there is no afterlife, our lives are utterly meaningless. Once mankind goes extinct, it will be as if we never existed. That seems pretty meaningless to me.
Denis reveals utter truth. We need to listen & take serious note. Brilliant revelations!
Social media is the biggest cause. Before social media you actually had to get out and use social skills. Not take a picture and have people gawk at you because you look good
Three reasons:
Self-hatred
Lack of meaning
Loss of freedom (on the Internet, mostly)
The self-hatred is a product of lack of meaning and too much time spent on social media.
Jim Finigan I lack meaning and barely spend anytime on social media. No one has time to go out with friends anymore. Everyone is busy. Work comes before family and relationships. I’m lonely cause I don’t have friends to hang out with.
i feel like the high internet use can be well explained by our loss of freedom in life. for my whole life, only the internet has offered me an environment where i can exist without someone dragging me around.
And a dying earth
@@qwertytrewqyoubutt8530 the hippies/boomers, thought that stupid shit too. Don't worry about things you can not change. You are right, the earth is dying....so are we. The day we are born, we are on our way to death. Same with the earth. Enjoy today. You are not guaranteed tomorrow.
Here's what's even scarier: "Loss of values and meaning" has a one-word synonym: decadence. Decadence is the next-to-the-final stage of any civilization. It sits between Golden Age and Downfall. This means that decadence carried out to its logical conclusion leads to a civilization's downfall. Here are the stages of any given civilization:
Founding (in America: 1776)
Growth (in America: 1776 - 1945)
Golden Age (in America: 1945 - 1966)
Decadence (in America: 1966 - Present; basically, decadence here began with the "Sexual Revolution")
Downfall (in America: sometime in the near future)
Jeff Zebert good points
History doesn't really work this way. Most civilizations go through multiple different phases often in a non-linear fashion.
Only difference this time is the extent of globalization and nuke power. A downfall could literally be the end of all human life. A bunch of rabid progressives would be responsible for that tragedy.
very good points. extend those on a global scale because a lot of countries around the world are suffering from decadence.
Liberals ruin everything
Well Dennis, I'm sure you'll make a good point but speaking as a young person here are several things that come to mind before watching the video. Yes, I will post my post video response.
1. We are told from a young age to go to college, an institution that will leave us in debt half our lives and hands out a bunch of useless degrees while making us more suicidal and depressed while attending it according to data.
2. We have ever increasing tax rates and national debt that makes it harder to make enough money to live off of while making Uncle Sam happy.
3. We came out as the obese generation. And our life spans have stated decreasing in recent years because of it. As a former fat person, heathy=happy/happier.
4. Our parents and teachers don't teach us anything useful. Actually, the parents depend on the teachers to do all the teaching.
5. We are told to get a job when no one wants to hire a 16 year old with no job experience. Granted it gets easier as you get older but it's still a struggle because no one taught us how to write a resume.
I'm sure I'll think of more, but I'll watch the video.
