Quick Correction: Bukka and Harihara were prisoners of Muhammed Bin Tughlaq, not Khilji, who was dead by the time they arrived in Delhi as prisoners. Also, I know, it's a bit cheeky referring to KDR as "India's Greatest King" -- but hey, it's a good conversation starter! (Personally, I think Amoghavarsha and Chandragupta give him a run for his money). Enjoy the video!

On the way back from his campaign against Hussain Nizam Shah I, he let his soldiers loot, kill, rape, steal and burn everything on their way as they pleased while they were crossing the lands of Ali Adil Shah I despite the fact that he was an ally of Rama Raya. This caused the Deccan Sultanates to unite against him, the Gilani brothers to betray him and the capital city of Vijayanagara to be razed to the ground. 1. Bad design of forts for not inculcating the heavy artillery
    2. Killing his own PM and father figure and his family, accepting his mistake later of doing so, all his lords saw this as greatly disheartening while Rama Raya sides seemed more and more appealing
3 . Act of kindness for letting the civilians leave in richur and later plundering the whole sultanate, his impulsiveness was seen as unjust and at the same time threatening for all the other sultanates of vijaynagar.
    4. And later not reassuring them nor weakening rather he allowed them to strengthen themselves and when later Ram Raya also started playing one Sultan against other it backfired horribly and subsequent invasion marked the end of vijaynagar

Amazing video - always love learning more about Vijayanagara! I've been a fan of your channel since your first video about the Cholas and your story-telling and presentation ability have become so good - this is probably one of my favorite videos on UA-cam now. Can't believe the YT algorithm did not show me this video until now.
Keep it up, excited to your future videos! Not sure if you are taking suggestions, but would love to learn more about the Tripartite Struggle, especially the Gurjaras and Palas since you already made a video about the Rashtrakutas.

Thank you so much - not just for supporting the channel with a generous tip, but also for supporting the channel since the very beginning. It’s amazing how far this has all come. It’s honestly nostalgic for me to think back to that first video and all the excitement I had about stories still to tell. It really means a lot to me that you’re still following the channel and enjoying the content. Lots more (and varied) content to come! Also, I’ve definitely been contemplating a video on the Palas of Bengal, so that could be coming down the pipeline eventually :)

KDR and Vijaynagar empire is perhaps the most underrated emperor and empires in the world.
KDR was a Tuluva king (from the Tulu speaking community).
Vijaynagar empire was one of most prosperous kingdom at that time in the world...with the capital being the second biggest city in the world where traders from world over came.

I’m glad you’re telling us about more than the Indus Valley /Dravidian Civilization; its fall to the Aryan invaders; the Moguls (Mongols) who invaded in the Middle Ages spread Islam and founded Sikhism; and the eventual conquest by the British. I really find history of Southern India fascinating especially the Cholas.
India is really a (sub) continent because it was composed of many nations and kingdoms not all one nation a culture like its portrayed by Western media just like Africa is portrayed as one big country instead of as the 2nd largest continent with the most diverse population and cultures in the world.

I think there was something to KDR’s low caste status influencing his approach to being king/emperor. Because he was an outsider and had to always be a maverick he often engaged in bold, often foolhardy and reckless behavior like sneaking out and to see a prostitute and marrying her; making rash and impulsive decisions. Eventually, he cost his successors his kingdom because he killed the one man who was always in his corner and he alienated the Sultans to the North who eventually turned on him.

There is one major error in the information here that I feel must be addressed. Bukka and Harihara did not enter the service of Alauddin Khilji. They entered the service of Muhammad bin Tughluq. That is a significant difference, because Alauddin Khilji was from the Khilji dynasty and only raided into the south without conquering it and died long before Muhammad bin Tughluq conquered into south India and this opened the doors for both the Bahmanis and Vijayanagara to emerge.
