The 1965 novel upon which Dune is based also inspired the storytelling of Star Wars, leading to some striking similarities between the two films. Dune director Denis Villeneuve knew that George Lucas had looked to Paul Atreides' adventures on Arrakis when crafting the Luke Skywalker story. Two sons of great families living on a sand planet, developing their power, in order to fight the Empire. The Dune "Voice" became the Star Wars "Force".

Dune world expands with each novel / movie. It starts with duncan idaho returning in dune 3. The bene tlieax people are introduced. Face dancers are a trip
If you really want to understand the story, one must read the book. This film is much better than the 1984 vers version, but there is only so much that can be included.
All the indoor places are built up in Hungary Budapest. No CGI. Even they built a real size ornithopter. The outside Caladaan was in Norway the Arrakis in Jordan a few in the Emirates. Unfortunately they released only a few videos of the making it was an awesome project what they built.
Hehe, just wait what’s the end of this. You see, Frank Herbert wasn’t JRR Tolkien and he wasn’t writing a heroic novel where good defeats the big evil at the end. 😁 He had a very different story to tell.
Brian Tyler made a great original score for the 2003 TV movie of the two immediate sequel books, billed collectively as "Children of Dune". Highly recommend to any musically inclined person. Very beautiful stuff. I'd stack it alongside the Zimmer, although not as "big" a sound.
18:10, the depth of the relationships between Thufir, Duncan and Leto is never truly shown in the movie. Thufir has been with House Atreides since Leto's father Paulus was in power. He is a Mentat essentially a living supercomputer and serves as master of spies and assassins for House Atreides. Old Duke Paulus died in a bullfighting match when Leto was around Paul's age. Were it not for Thufir's wise counsel, House Atreides would have collapsed. Duncan was a stable boy tending the bulls that Paulus used to fight. Testimony from young Duncan exposed a conspiracy involving Leto's mother to remove Paulus. When his mother's complicity was exposed, Leto exiled her to the far side of Caladan and never spoke to her again. So within a few days, young Duke Leto became an orphan. Leto outlawed bullfighting and took Duncan as a ward. Over time Thufir essentially became a surrogate father to Leto and Duncan is a surrogate brother. If Leto was Batman, Thufir would be his Alfred Pennyworth. As Paul grew up Thufir became a grandfatherly figure to him. One plot line that is left out of the movie is that Paul is a potential Mentat. Thufir was supposed to train him to become a Mentat. Once Duncan came of age he became a soldier in the Atreides army where his talent for sword fighting was discovered. Leto sent him to the Ginaz school so his talent could be honed to a greater level. Duncan and Gurney are the Swordmasters for House Atreides. After Paul was born, Duncan became his combat teacher and an older brother/uncle figure to him.
Dreams are weird of course, but have you ever had a lucid dream? Where you take control and do what you want? I've been able to do that about 3-4 times in my 43 years. Oh and obviously I wanted to fly in those dreams, so I did lol.
My dreams respond to the music I listen to. If i have been listening to classical music, I remember my dreams better and have more chances of lucid dreaming. A few times I dream an entire musical and wake up singing a song from the musical.
I had thousands of them growing up. And many of them seemed to last subjectively much longer than a single night. Sometimes much, much longer, with entire fictional pasts attached to them. Tried to write them down for about a week, but it ended up taking hours a day and barely scratched the surface. A lot of them were "cosmic" and hard to put into words.
I'd mentioned in a previous comment about Dune, so was very happy to see you react to it. Number 2 is also brilliant. Frank Herbert's Dune universe is quite incredible. I read most of the books years ago and was always fascinated with the storyline. I used to also play the various Dune PC games that have been released over the years. The original movie was a classic. Sting and Patrick Stewart, as well as many other great actors. I was really surprised but glad to see Swedish Actor, Stellan Skarsgård playing The Baron Harkonnen. Such a versatile actor. Of course, Rebecca Ferguson is also Swedish and her performance is very powerful. All the roles are exceptionally well picked. Looking forward to seeing Number 2 :)
Paul was 13 in the books when he moved to Arrakis, 15 in Dune from 1965 and like 17 in this addaptaion. But the timeline between the books and the movies are very weird in many ways.
Jessica and Leto aren't married, she is his concubine. However, Paul has been recognized as Leto's rightful son and heir. Despite Jessica officially being just his concubine, she is essentially Leto's wife in all matters except name. It was by her encouragement, Leto didn't marry Jessica so he would be open to make an alliance with another house. But in her heart of hearts, she really doesn't want him to take a wife even for political reasons. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood is a cold and calculating group of women. They use their master of the Voice, their intelligence and sensuality to manipulate the Great Houses from the shadows. Things like love and genuine affection are shunned and considered tools or leverage. However, because Leto is such a strong, honorable and loving man she fell in love with him deeply. It was for her great love for Leto that Jessica broke with the sisterhood and gave birth to a son for him.
Dune is an important milestone in Sci Fi history. Lord of the Rings, The Foundation Series and Dune are probably the three biggest books that have shaped modern Fantasy and Science Fiction writings and movies. George Lucas admits to Dune being one of the inspirations for Star Wars. Herbert use to joke after watching Star Wars that Lucas owes him money. It is a complex read and the story is very confusing. You may miss the intent of the story and the movies cut out so much of the book. Even though this was the first movie of two this probably does not cover a third of the first book. So much also had to be changed to fit in a visual storytelling format. This was a good adaptation of Dune and it has opened the door to more storytelling of the Dune world of stories.
This film is relatively faithful to the book, so it isn't a bad place to start. But the book may be the most influential science fiction novel in the two centuries.
Yeah, you should check out Eraserhead lol; Enjoyed both these movies. Apparently they’re waiting for buddy to get a little older before they start making the third one.
Dune saga is huge and complex. This movie is only half of the first 6 orignal books from Frank Herbert, 1965 to 1985. But the entire history in the Dune universe spans something like 30 000 years.
In many movies, the soundtrack is an afterthought. But in this movie the soundtrack is a main character that helps us understand what the characters are thinking.

Don't you dare slander Dune by comparing it to Star Wars. Star Wars got its ideas off of Dune. Dune was unique during it's time. It had no references other than its own. Star Wars used tons of references from Dune.
My only complaint about this movie is that we didn't get a fight scene between Duncan and Rabban. Felt like a missed opportunity. I can't wait for Denis Villenevue to do his Cleopatra movie, too.
