As a drummer, the late 80s and early 90s in rap/hip-hop has absolutely some of the best drums and bass in any genre. Eric B. and Rakim, Geto Boys, Kool Keith, Ultramagnetic MCs all were doing incredible things and made songs that can hold up decades later.
Every word on beat at 120 bpm you don't hear that anymore. Rakim in 92 was off the charts. Also big ups to Eric B for producing all these gems in that era.

On the 'Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em' album he mostly rapped over Paul C and Large Professor beats. Didn't make anything worse though. In fact it made him better than on any other of their albums in my opinion.
