Here`s a rule of thumb to date boxes by their handles. If you have a a campaign box, usually you can tell by the screwed down mounts and a base drawer, if the handles are drawer pull handles, then they are usually made before 1800. If they are typical campaign inset handles, then after 1800. They were made like this for easy storage when taken on the continent during the Napoleonic wars and then carried on in to the Victorian era Like all rules of thumb its just a guideline but a good one.
