I love campaigne furniture. clever use of space and use of hinge work always makes an impression on whoever encounters these types of works.

Here`s a rule of thumb to date boxes by their handles. If you have a a campaign box, usually you can tell by the screwed down mounts and a base drawer, if the handles are drawer pull handles, then they are usually made before 1800. If they are typical campaign inset handles, then after 1800. They were made like this for easy storage when taken on the continent during the Napoleonic wars and then carried on in to the Victorian era
Like all rules of thumb its just a guideline but a good one.

That is beautiful. I'd love to see a more indepth presentation of this piece, particularly the mechanisms.

Dear Michael, thank you for your comment. It was a beautiful piece, but I'm afraid I cannot do a more in depth video as the piece sold several years ago.

I've priced simplified reproductions, and they're not inexpensive. I cannot imagine what this beautiful original costs.

I know the function of the grid of ribbon on the underside of the compartment lid was for sticking bits of paper. What was it called?

I’ve heard it called a ‘stationery rack’. I’m not sure if that’s official.
