I can see the egyption revival elements in this; from the brass bindings, the outside handles, and especially the candle sconces - taking the form of a closed egyption lotus flower. Really lovely box!
The lock with "GR" carving may have been in the stocks of the maker for a while, so that the date of the making of the box is slightly more recent that 1830. I've got a similar case here with patented two 1908 Soss hinges used in an Art Deco furniture piece (ca. 1930)
Hello Chris I just found a writing slope in the trash. I live in the USA in New York. It is in very good condition. I believe its made out of Mahogany and has the original leather writing pad. It has 2 hidden secret drawers. Could you have a look at it for me? I would just need an email address--I have about 10 clear pictures of it I could send if you have the time.
