- It's late July 2024 and the Scottish weather hasn't been co-operating all summer. Finally, a break in the weather arrives and I can head out for an adventure! Last week I sailed from Arisaig to an anchorage a few miles South. This week I continue on a trip that will take me past Ardnamurchan Point, Coll, and out to Barra on the Outer Hebrides.
Wayfarer 8599 "Moonshadow"
Mate , well sailed on a beautifully presented old craft. Fair winds to you. 🎉
Thank you!
Very nice!
Well done and thanks for a very entertaining video.
Great camera work too!
Thank you!
Great video!
👌👌👌
You’re an amazing sailor with great handling skills. Very natural. I sail a wayfarer on the Clyde Your videos are an inspiration to lots of people. Stay safe
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Looks lush in that zone. Looking forward to the crossing now.
Thank you! Just got to wait a week...
Thanks Jonathan! A blissful glimpse of Summer in darkest January. Looking forward to the next instalment which sounds epic!
You're welcome!
I can’t wait to get my Wayfarer out on adventures around Scotland, but I must fix and buy some things and prepare it for eventually doing multi day camping trips. 🤩👍🏻. Your videos are epic please keep them coming.
Thank you, I'm glad you're being inspired! You might want to consider coming to the UK Wayfarer Association cruising conference in March, where there's lots of helpful advice and talks on these subjects. If you're a UKWA member you can find the booking form in the E-News, and if not then what better excuse to join!
very cool! thanks a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it!
i see your go more north than your usual island hops around Islay and mull , its quite a loop your tackling on this one , i,m loving the vids
Thank you! Yes, a little more North, and a lot more West...
Epic!
Love the videos Jonathan. Can I ask how you manage launching and moreover recovery on your own? I would love to take my Wayfarer out solo but couldn’t manage recovery alone… thanks.
Thank you! The answer is with difficulty, perseverance, and a lot of help from kind passers by. No special tricks, but once the boat is on the trolley I generally use my car to tow it out of the water with a rope.
Another great video. Your boat looks like bit of a race weapon - did you change much to make it more cruising friendly (tiller impeder, jiffy reefing, etc)?
Thank you! These late wooden Wayfarers were indeed built as racers. I took all the fittings off and started from scratch to simplify and bring up to modern standards. I added the reefing too (for the genoa as well as the main) and a few bits and pieces here and there. She's still completely class legal though so I could sail over a start line after a cruise if I was having a strange moment (although I'd have to throw the illegal electronics overboard first)...
