My ancient JADE PLANT, Crassula ovata: How to grow & bloom!

  • This video shows you how to grow, propagate and also get your Jade plant (Crassula ovata) to show it's beautiful blooms for you! My Jade plant is already well over 25 years old and shows it's awesome blooms for me every winter! This video also gives you a rare insight to these wonderful flowers and blooms. The wonderful #succulent plant Crassula ovata is one of the most popular and most widespread succulent houseplants grown worldwide. It is hugely popular because it requires only relatively little maintenance and is quite easy to grow: give it a bright location outdoors (frostfree!) or indoors (at or near a window), keep it in a well-draining sandy or gritty cactus or succulent soil mix and do not overwater it (water thoroughly then allow the substrate to completely dry out before watering again).
    For it to develop buds and then it's blooms for you, keep it cooler and drier in the autumn / fall months. The cooler temperatures, shorter days and reduced watering will trigger buds to be developed on plants that are old and mature enough to do so.
    Propagating from leaf or stem cuttings is very easy as these develop roots quite quickly and easily when placed in a pot with substrate and are then occasionally watered!
    I can definitely recommend growing this natural bonsai-like succulent plant, to both beginners as well as experienced growers of cactus and other succulent plants!
    Enjoy!
    Joe

    Your Crassula ovata is so beautiful covered with flowers! What dedication to be moving it in and out. It looks big and heavy. Great job giving it the proper care and thanks for the care tips! Mine is still small and young but I’m looking forward when it matures and flowers.

      Hey Ana! Thank you so much, very happy that you found the video useful and also enjoyed my grande old Jade plant in bloom! Yes indeed, haha, it doesn't just look it... it IS pretty heavy and about 5 feet high now! So indeed, every year it is a two-person operation, moving it out into the garden in late spring and then back into the conservatory again in fall - BUT it's worth it as it really loves the fresh air and being exposed to rain, sun, every weather, except for freezing, frosty temps of course! Good luck with your plant too, hope it matures to bloom for you very soon too! Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year and very best wishes for 2024!

    First of all: Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄😉
    This plant really makes the term "succulent" all honour considering how juicy the leafs are 😄
    Today I discovered to my amazement that my Schusterpalme ("Aspidistra elatior") develops a little flower bud. It is said to be quite rare that this plant blooms, so I'm really happy about this discovery 🤩
    By the way, I got a T-Shirt with a blooming Lophophora williamsii printed on it for Christmas, such a gorgeous motive! 😊
    Enjoy the rest of the year 2023! :)

      Hi Jacob! Sorry for my late reply, but I had taken a few days off, and coming back I was very happy to just now read your wonderful comments, thanks! I hope that you and your family too had an excellent Christmas, and your Lophophora t-shirt sounds fantastic! Wow, it sounds like you indeed have quite a rare flowering palm (Aspidistra) coming there soon on your end, congratulations and well done for getting it to bloom!
      Haha, yes indeed the Jade plant is a wonderful and very classic succulent plant, those leaves are so fleshy and store lot's of water and nutrients for the plant to actually endure a long time in very dry conditions! Enjoy the final two days of the current year and wishing you and your family a Happy New Year and very best wishes for a sucessful and healthy 2024! Take care and happy growing!!

    My former apartment was on the 3rd floor. It had no elevator only stairs. The staircase had all glass windows in front. Being on top level, I placed some plants there. One was a grassula ovata. In the summer, the temperature could reach 30 or 35 Celsius in the winter, 5 or 8 degrees Celsius.
    It crow big and did flower every time around January.
    When I move to the apartment where i live now, I sold him to someone because I had no place for it.
    After watching your video, maybe I will get me a new one.
    I have a tiny gollem, but that is weird growing.
    Merry Christmas everyone. ❣️🎄🌵

    Nice plant!!! Yes these were extremely popular when I lived in Southern California as both potted and landscape shrubs!! The trunk of these plants would get massive!!! Portulacaria afra does much the same out there planted in the ground . And yes, always blooming in the winter!!! It's been a long time since I've seen them that size!! Great video Joe!!! Thanks for sharing this great plant with us!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks ,out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌷🌸🌾🌳💐🌴🌹🪴🌻🌿🍀🌱😃👍

Also great to hear those also flowered in the winters, the lower temperatures, shorter days and less watering really are the triggers for blooms! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend! Indeed, makes sense, and I had never realised and thought of that before as here of course, we have such strong contrasts between the summer vs winter seasons. At least you get to grow your plants year round, while mine are dormant, sleeping and snoring for 4-5 months of the year, haha! 😉😴 Sending you very best regards, thanks for watching and for your awesome comments, happy growing!!🙌🙏👍😉🪴🌿🌵🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️

    Amazing information as always. I have a very old jade tree that was recently pruned a bit this year because it was very top heavy and branches bending. Did not wish to shock it when it was done in October....more pruning is required in the Spring.
    It has started to bud new leaves but now dealing with mealybugs on its new growth. It has never bloomed for us... perhaps next year.

    Wonderful video... you have explained various aspects of growing the Jade plant clearly. I live in North India and despite all my effort even the biggest Jades die in our 40+ C summers, even when kept indoors, so now I buy a small plant every fall and keep it till April after which they suddenly collapse. Any suggestions to keep them alive in our hot summers would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your wonderful feedback, I'm very happy that you enjoyed the video! Wow, that does sound like quite a challenge that you have there. At the same time, these plants are succulents and, as in their natural habitats, should be able to cope with 40+ C . I have a few of these plants in my greenhouse, where these temperatures are frequent during the summers. I cultivate them quite hard, i.e. only quite rare watering when it starts to gets hot, and I stop watering them, but have them out of the sun in a shady location, and some even throw off and lose most of their leaves. In the late summer and fall, when temps start to drop i water a bit more again and they grow new leaves. Perhaps this might help? Wishing you better luck next time! Thanks again and best regards to you in Northern India !🙏🙌👍😊🪴🌿🪴😎☀️👍

      @@cactusjoe Thanks a lot I think you have given me the right approach for summer care for Jade.. I was increasing watering when it was hot...apparently, they are dormant in our summers and should be protected from direct sun and given only need base watering. Will try this in the coming summers. Really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question in detail 😃👏🙏 I do think you have a great understanding of plants I can't believe you have a fern and a jade growing together in the same pot 👍👍

    My ruffle jade is growing well..its been 2yrs mow..its in a terra cotta pot. The ovarata jade always die
    ..idk why i cant keep it alive

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 місяців тому

      Hi Michelle, very sorry to hear that! If the reason for their dying is root rot (... the most common issue for Crassula ovata) then perhaps next time repot your plant after buying (or rooting a cutting from a friend's plant) into a very gritty, sandy and well-draining cactus soil mix. Also, these plants can and should go for long stretches without any water. They hate regular watering and constantly wet soil. Better luck the next time and have a great day! 👍🙌🙏😊🌿🪴🌿
